World War One / Can't find on Royal Navy Service Records
« on: Saturday 20 May 06 10:08 BST (UK)  »
I have 2 men who I know were in the navy during WW1, but cannot find them on the records, Joseph and Ernest/ Earnest Bowen.
I have tried spelling their names differently, looked just at their surname, tried a wildcard entry on their surname, and just looked at place of birth, but still cannot find them. Any ideas please anyone?!

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / 1851/61 lookup stoke on trent
« on: Monday 17 April 06 19:01 BST (UK)  »
I would be very grateful if anyone were anyone able to find this family for me in 1851 or 1861 (or 1871 for that matter!!!) I do already have the details for Arthur from 1861 onwards.

This is the info I have from the 1841 census:

They are in the Shelton area of Stoke on Trent at Pale ? by cheapside.

Hannah Bradshaw  dressmaker  30 born in county
Herbert Bradshaw 6 born in county
Arthur 4 1/2 born in county
Caroline 1 born in county

I am unsure of the father's name, poss, James/John? but he is aged 40 and is a potters presser, born in the county

If anyone could find them for me I would be thrilled. They certainly don't seem to be around by 1881!

Glamorganshire / David John Phillips of Cilfynydd-war memorial?
« on: Friday 24 February 06 18:34 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone please help? David John Phillips, born c 1888 who in 1912 lived in Cilfynydd. At present  I know little more about him than the fact he married Maud Morgan in 1912 and his father was John ( details from marriage certificate)

We know that David died during the first world war and I would like to find out when and what regiment he was in - Maud's family have pictures of him but until we researched this, did not even know his name. From looking at the roll of honour website it appears he is on the WW1 memorial at Cilfyndd, but no details are given.

Does anyone know if there are more details on the memorial or elsewhere in the village, or of another way of tracking down when he died/ regiment /other details about him. ( I have already cross referenced commonwealth war graves and medal cards and can only narrow it down to 8 men.)

I would apprecaite any ideas or info about the memorials if anyone has it.
Thanks

Glamorganshire / Treorky cemetery
« on: Tuesday 07 February 06 16:01 GMT (UK)  »
I have a relative, Joseph Morgan who died on 5th March 1909, who was interred at Treorky cemetery on March 9th (info off death card). At present we are not sure when his wife died and whether she is buried with him.

Is anyone familiar with the cemetery and able to tell me whether headstones are still standing/legible and so whether this is a possible source of information as to his wife.

Thanks very much

Could anyone please do anything to tidy up this image of my late grandmother. My grandad carries it round in his wallet and so it has suffered badly over the years. This is a photo of it as the original is in Italy, so I am hoping it is good enough to work with.
Thankyou very much, it would really be appreciated.

Armed Forces / How old?
« on: Tuesday 01 November 05 15:09 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me how old you would need to be to join the army in the 1870/80s and also how long you would need to be in to get a pension - is it the same as the 14 years today?
Thanks

The Common Room / Death certificate query
« on: Tuesday 11 October 05 22:20 BST (UK)  »
I have a death certificate for my great grandmother who was unmarried. Under occupation it lists her job and the fact that she is the daughter of William Bowen - a farm labourer. Her brother was the informant, and she was living at his house.

I have no idea whether William Bowen was alive or dead at this point and wondered whether the fact that he is listed as her father, with his occupation may be because he alive, otherwise I would have thought that her brother would have done just as well by himself.

Can anyone with similar experiences give me suggestions as to whether I can assume that William may well be alive at that point?
