The Common Room / Durdans Malvern
« on: Friday 26 May 23 03:42 BST (UK)  »
Hello fellow Rootschatters,
In a probate entry from 1909, James Kelley died at "the Durdans Malvern". He lived in Malvern Links.
Can anyone tell me what this was? A Hospital, hospice, home of some kind? Google is of no help. I only get a hospital in Sri Lanka.
Thanks in advance.

The Common Room / Gloucestershire Feet of Fines 1360-1508
« on: Wednesday 24 May 23 02:19 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have the above title, published by the Bristol and Gloucestershire Archaeological Society? I would like a lookup please.
I tried wading through images online, but the combination of court hand and medieval Latin makes the task very onerous.

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Gloucestershire archives lookup
« on: Wednesday 22 March 23 01:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I am wondering if someone who goes to the archives would be kind enough to go through some documents on my behalf please?
In their infinite wisdom, the archives has bundled together 40 documents under 1 reference, with no further divisions. I have enquired with them about a search; they told me that their fee is £37 per hour, but to look through this lot was too much for them apparently.
All I am interested in is any documents referring to the Dowdeswell family, and the ones I am interested in would be in the earlier documents, up to possibly 1784.
The finding reference is D3775/1. The collection is of deeds and papers relating to Smow Farm, deposited by Hillard and Ward, solicitors of Chelmsford Essex.
I know this a big ask, but living in Australia,  my only other option is to pay a professional researcher.
I am happy to pay any costs involved, reader's ticket, car parking etc.
Also, I  am happy to have just transcripts, no photocopies are necessary.
Thank you.

The Common Room / Admon conundrum
« on: Tuesday 21 March 23 02:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hello fellow Rootschatters,
I have a conundrum with a 1745 admon that I'd like opinions, advice and thoughts on.
The admon is for a John Dowdeswell, dated 11 May 1745. In two places on the document it reads, "John Dowdeswell of Sedgeberrow, minor intestate deceased". John's father, Thomas of Temple Guiting, was appointed administrator, and Charles Parker of Ashchurch and Thomas Clark of St Michael Bedwardine were named as being bound for the twenty pounds fee.
Thomas Dowdeswell had several children, baptised in Ashchurch, Bishops Cleve and Sedgeberrow. And this is where my confusion starts. He had a son John baptized in 1707, who was buried in 1714 in Sedgeberrow. Another John was baptized in Sedgeberrow in 1718. I cannot find another John baptized in Sedgeberrow, or anywhere else, the son of Thomas. The term minor would mean under 21, whereas the 1718 John would be 27 in 1745. Additionally, I am almost certain the 1718 John married in Sep 1745 in Gloucester, described as "of Ashchurch", given naming patterns of his children.
A minor dying intestate would have to be at least 14 or 15 you would think, working or at least in an apprenticeship to make the admon application worthwhile.
Given the coincidence of the admon and the marriage both in 1745, I had considered whether it was a con job, to wipe any debts before John was married. I think it unlikely, but given Charles Parker above was Thomas' son-in-law, it is a possibility. What sort of proof would have been required to apply for an admon?
I have checked records online, and had the Worcestershire Archives do a search on my behalf, but no other John Dowdeswell baptisms can be found, with a father Thomas, in the right time frame in either Worcestershire or Gloucestershire.
I will be very glad of others' thoughts.

The Common Room / Familysearch issues
« on: Friday 27 September 19 06:54 BST (UK)  »
Is it just me, or is there something different with familysearch?
The last couple of days, I've signed in as normal, but when I have tried to do a search that I have done before, all I get is results from the censuses, no parish records.
Has anyone else encountered this?

Devon / Canonsleigh House
« on: Wednesday 24 July 19 01:56 BST (UK)  »
Hello again Rootschatters,
Can anyone help me with more information about the owners of Canonsleigh, variously described as a house or mansion. Demolished in 1821.
I have the Culme family owning it until 1658, when it was purchased by a Mr. Smith.
I'm not sure if this the same family as James Smyth the MP who owned it in the early to mid 1700's.
Any information gratefully received.

Can anyone please tell me if this group is still going?
I tried sending an email using the contact on their website, but it bounced back.

Devon / Help finding a marriage
« on: Thursday 04 July 19 06:59 BST (UK)  »
According to the 1847 edition of Burke's Landed Gentry, my ancestors William Palmer and Rebecca Smith were married 2 Sep 1698.
I cannot find any marriage or marriage licence (if there was one) at all. Such a specific date means there must be a record.
He was from Clyst Honiton, and had become vicar of Clyst Hydon; she is described in Burke's as of Canonsleigh.
I have checked all three locations (Canonsleigh is in Burlescombe parish).
Can anyone find this marriage please? Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Devon / Combe Raleigh photos
« on: Tuesday 28 May 19 00:23 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
Is there any kind Rootschatter living in or near Combe Raleigh who could take some photos of gravestones and/or memorials for me please?
Living in Australia makes it a bit difficult.
Many thanks in advance.
