United States of America / Oakwood Cemetery Troy N.Y
« on: Friday 01 September 23 12:21 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I’ve just obtained a death certificate for my GGG grandmother, who emigrated from Ireland to US in the 1870s.
It states that she was interred in Oakwood Cemetery Troy, N.Y.
I checked Family search and the following location of her grave is given - 5   329 55-4
Does anyone know of a map of the cemetery that makes sense of the above co ordinates?
She was buried on 12 February 1924.

Many thanks

United States of America / Getting a copy of a death Certificate for Cohoes NY
« on: Tuesday 06 June 23 15:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I have recently discovered that my Ggg grandmother Maria Cumberland formerly Magee nee Hobson died 9 feb 1924 in Cohoes N.Y.
I’m in the UK and have had massive difficulty trying to obtain a copy of her death certificate.
After a lot of being pushed from pillar to post, I managed to find the county clerk for Cohoes who said I had to post a money order over to US to their office.
Surely in this day and age there is a quicker, more secure way to obtain a copy?
Can anyone help or give advice?
Many thanks in advance.

The Common Room / Info theft
« on: Wednesday 04 January 23 14:49 GMT (UK)  »
I reached out to someone on Ancestry with information.

They didn’t bother to respond, but added the information to their tree.

I am so annoyed. They’ve stolen my research and not even had the courtesy to acknowledge or exchange any information.

I’ve reported it to ancestry as copywrite theft but goodness knows how long it will take for them to action it.

It’s a short sharp reminder that not everyone in the genealogy community is trustworthy.

United States of America / Caroline Hobson Jewett born 1863 Belfast
« on: Tuesday 03 January 23 23:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
Please can someone help.
I am trying to work out when this lady emigrated from Belfast to the USA.
I believe that her mother is my GGG grandmother Maria Magee ( nee Hobson) and that she and her mother emigrated to the US after her father Arthur Magee died in the workhouse in Belfast 1872 of smallpox.
Would it be possible that her mother reverted to her maiden name after the death of her husband?
Any assistance in confirming this would be most helpful
Thank you

Ireland Resources / Irishgenealogy.ie
« on: Tuesday 03 January 23 16:19 GMT (UK)  »
In the summer I emailed this organisation to ask when early deaths  ( 1864-1870) that are currently not available on the site would be added.
They said end 2022.
Unfortunately it looks like this isn’t happening now as I’ve checked and nothing has been updated, and no information about the update.
Does anyone have any idea what’s going on?

Thanks

Ireland / Virtual Treasury
« on: Wednesday 29 June 22 16:25 BST (UK)  »
I’m sure by now everyone has heard of this project. It is now live and accessible via

https://www.virtualtreasury.ie/

I’m still exploring it but so far the most useful resource within it that I have found is the 1766 religious Census.

It would be good if others could share what they have found to be useful to genealogists under this thread? ( if allowed by mods?)

Enjoy.

Antrim / Searching for Caroline McGee
« on: Monday 25 April 22 19:14 BST (UK)  »
Hello chatters! Can you help or advise?
I found the following record on Roots Ireland- the christening of Caroline McGee born 3.4.1867 and baptised in Christ Church Church of Ireland on 22/12/1869. Mother Maria Hobson and father Arthur McGee.
However I cannot find any further records, civil or church in relation to Caroline.
It seems her birth wasn’t even registered in the civil records!
I thought it was a legal requirement to register a birth with the authorities after 1864?
I do know that Arthur and Maria were married in Donaghenry Church Of Ireland in 1857 and lived in Dufless parish Ardtrea Tyrone but then moved up to Belfast at the end of the 1860’s.
Caroline had an older brother Benjamin born in Ardtrea, baptised Ardtrea church of Ireland in 1858. I did go to PRONI to check the baptisms at Ardtrea a few years ago and found Benjamin’s baptism but no further baptisms for the couple in the Ardtrea church records.
If anyone could help trace any records of Caroline or possible siblings I would be grateful!
It is possible that she emigrated as her aunt Caroline Hobson ( Hobbs) moved to Swarthmore Pennsylvania around 1863.
It is so typical that my ancestors didn’t stick to the rules and get their children’s births registered!!
Many thanks

Antrim / Belfast workhouse index online at proni
« on: Thursday 20 January 22 20:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I have noticed that the Belfast workhouse index to registers has been digitised by PRONI.
It can be accessed through the catalogue under BG/7/GUK/1
This accesses the first records starting in 1892- for later records you substitute the 1 for 2, 3 etc. You have to download the images and it isn’t searchable by name.
The only information provided is name, age, date of entry and inmate reference number.
You then have to physically go to PRONI to look at the actual register in question.
Still a useful resource if you suspect your ancestor was in the Belfast workhouse.
