London and Middlesex / Walter NELSON missing after 1902
« on: Monday 29 January 24 15:36 GMT (UK)  »
This NELSON family are giving me a headache  :-\

Walter NELSON was born in Stepney in 1872.

His parents were both dead by 1890.

I can see him with his brother, Thomas, in 1891 living at 62, Longfellow Road, Mile End Old Town.

I can't see a definite entry for him on the 1901 census.

There is an entry in the settlement register of Hackney Union in 1902 but it doesn't give many details.

Can anyone find further information - census entries for 1901 or later, marriage or death?

London and Middlesex / Ellen Kate NELSON - missing after 1891
« on: Saturday 27 January 24 22:25 GMT (UK)  »
Ellen Kate NELSON was born 1867 in Brixton.

In 1888 she married James Charles MENZIES

They are together in the 1891 census living at 12, Commodore Street, Mile End Old Town.

I have found no children born to the couple.

In 1901 it looks like James is living with a lady called Annie and their young daughter, also named Annie, at 4, Repton Street, Limehouse.  I can't see a marriage for them.

I can find no trace of Ellen after 1891.  I haven't found a death nor a remarriage.  Is she living with someone?

Any suggestions welcome   :)

If you are lucky enough to have researched your ancestors a long way back you might find this database helpful.  It lists people involved in the Peasants' Revolt: Participants comprise everyone who was affected by the rising – not only those accused of being rebels, but also victims, jurors, justices and lawyers who took part in prosecutions arising from the revolt. The database includes information on relationships between individuals, occupations and background biographical information from sources such as manorial records.

United States of America / arrest to trial timescale

I have found newspaper reports that may concern someone I'm interested in.  How long did it take for cases to come to court in early 20th century New York?  I can find no evidence of a court case so perhaps the charges were dismissed.

The Common Room / FamilySearch books

Is anyone else have any problems with FamilySearch books?

For example if I click on any of the links on this web page

https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/385535?availability=Family%20History%20Library

and then click on view inside (which would usually take me to images from the book)

I get taken to FamilySearch Digital Search page.  There is a message to say: The Book Site is experiencing slower than usual image loading. We apologize for this inconvenience.

Can anyone suggest a way round this?

Kent / John Wallis of Linton
« on: Thursday 11 May 23 09:14 BST (UK)  »
Mr John WALLIS, gent, died at Linton (Lynton) in May 1702.

His will mentions his brother Edward, wife Rebecca and daughter Jane, aged under 21.

There are a few possible baptisms for a John Wallis in Kent but finding one with a brother called Edward is proving difficult.

I can't see a baptism for Jane nor a marriage for John to Rebecca so they may not have been a local family.

The family appear on some Ancestry trees but there seems to be little supporting evidence.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get further back with this family?

Kent / Missing Canterbury Licence
« on: Saturday 01 April 23 21:57 BST (UK)  »
Jane WALLIS married George MICHEL (MITCHELL) 6 Nov 1703 at Detling.

According to the parish register entry they married  by licence however I can't find a licence among Cowper's Canterbury Marriage Licences. I've always been able to find licences before.  Is the list incomplete?

The Common Room / Divorced woman's surname
« on: Friday 11 November 22 15:38 GMT (UK)  »
Was there a convention/preference for the surname used by a divorced woman in the early 1900s?  Did they continue to use their married name or revert to their maiden name?
