Yorkshire (West Riding) / MARY MARSHALL b. 1835 BARNSLEY
« on: Wednesday 23 May 12 07:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Perhaps someone can help with this brickwall.  Mary b. 1835 d.o. Thomas Marshall and Sarah Smith had an illegitimate son born 1857 at Barnsley Union Workhouse, father not listed on birth cert.  She married Joseph Hoyland Pattison in 1861 and they had a daughter, Mary, in 1865.  I have now found a marriage for Joseph Hoyland Pattison (widower) and Elizabeth Dawson (widow) (nee Adamson) in 1867.  I can't find a death for Mary between 1865 and 1867.  Any suggestions?

Cheers,

Tisy

Cornwall / Martha Maria FURLY
« on: Saturday 30 October 10 07:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am researching my female line, and have a brick wall in that I can 't find a baptism for Martha Maria Furly, b. about 1767;  she married Nathaniel Carkeet, b. 1764, baptised 14 Feb 1764 at St. Martin on Looe Bay, Cornwall.

It is thought that she was the daughter of the Rev. Samuel Furley and Ann Bloodworth; Samuel was the vicar at Roche in the late 1700's and later at Lostwithiel -  " Samuel Furley held the living on bonds from 1804."  (Lostwithiel - St. Bartholomew) Source:  http://pyran.org/LakesLostwithiel.pdf.

Is anyone researching this family?  Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

One Name Studies: T to Z / WOOD family, Staffordshire and Barnsley
« on: Sunday 10 October 10 08:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am researching the Wood family from Staffordshire who in the latter part of the 1800's owned the Wood Bros. Glassworks in Barnsley, Yorkshire.  William Wood worked for the Baccarat Glass  Co. in France prior to joining his brothers in the Barnsley Glassworks. He had two sons, Alphonse and Eugene, both born in France, who also worked at the Barnsley Works.  Is anyone researching this family?

Cheers,

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / DNA testing - genetic genealogy
« on: Monday 12 July 10 03:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

At the risk of been shot down in flames, I am raising this question as it seems to be a topic too hot to handle on many of the Rootsweb sites.  The problem arises in that it is considered "off-topic" to even raise the question of whether you have used this method of research to supplement the more traditional methods of transcribing parish records etc.  It tends to be seen (particularly by soem of the British sites) as just an "American fad" and of not use because it doesn't actually tell you who your ancestor may be.  It is however more complex than that, and having used Y-DNA testing to help in the search for my great-grandfather's father (he was illegitimate and took his mother's name)  I have now been establish with some certainty the name of our male line, as well as where this person came from, which correlates with the scant information which I have.

I would love to be able to discuss this online with a wider range of people than those of the same surname on the dedicated sites  (we are all there, after all, because we don't know where we originated in most cases, and as with mine, we have no idea what our line is, except for a possible name.

Is there a case for having a dedicated forum on this site for this purpose, and indeed on Rootsweb?  If so, it would mean that we could draw in many people who have used DNA testing with their views, as well as others who are considering it.

Cheers,

Tisy

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / MARSHALL family of Barnsley
« on: Friday 05 February 10 10:04 GMT (UK)  »
Further to my posts of some months ago re William Henry Marshall b. 1857 at Barnsley Union Workhouse, illigitimate s.o. Mary Marshall b. 1835, it now appears from DNA testing that William Henry's father may have been a person by the name of Wood.  It seems that we fall into the Haplogroup R1b1b2a1b4c1 (L20) and are awaiting confirmation of this from FamilyTreeDNA following a "deep clade test".

Are there any participants out there by the name of Wood who have had their Y-DNA tested who may be willing to compare their results?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Kind regards,

Tisy

Yorkshire (West Riding) / MARSHALL FAMILY OF BARNSLEY
« on: Tuesday 24 November 09 09:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I started this topic some time back, and had a lot of help from various listers.  Things have moved on a bit since then, and I would be most grateful for any help and advice.

My g-g-g-grandmother Mary Marshall b. 1835, daughter of Thomas and Sarah Marshall, gave birth to an illegitimate son at Barnsley Union Workhouse in 1857.  Mary had been working as a domestic servant in the house of Joseph and Elizabeth McLintock in 1851; Elizabeth McLintock died in 1852 and in that year Joseph was declared bankrupt.  Some time between then and 1860 when he died, he moved to Manchester and remarried in 1859.  I am assuming that because of his bankruptcy Mary Marshall would have had to leave his employ and find work elsewhere.

On the suggestion of a lister, I was able to find a Mary Pattison in the 1861 census for Crigglestone;  she was visiting Pattisons and had with her a child of 4 years named William Marshall - Mary's approximate date of birth was given as 1835;  I found a marriage for a Mary Marshall and Joseph Pattison in 1860, but the marriage certificate gives her father as "John Marshall", which throws a spanner in the works somewhat, as our Mary's father was Thomas.  I have not been able to find a baptism for Mary, and wonder whether anyone knows of a Mary Marshall b. 1835 whose father was John?

Because of the difficulties the family have had in trying to find out who William Henry's father was, my brother had his DNA tested;  whilst he has many 12 marker exact matches, at 25 and 37 markers he has some very definite matches to people by the name of Wood, two of which have family origins in Derbyshire and Cheshire.  These matches indicate a common ancestor many generations back.  I have found a William Henry Wood b. about 1834 in Barnsley, in the 1861 census, living in Church Street with his mother Ann and sister Lucy - does anyone have this person in their tree?

There is also the possibility that Mary may have found employment at Hickleton Hall, residence of Sir. Charles Wood Viscount Halifax;  this would tie in the the family "myth" which tells of her working for wealthy people at a "big house" at the time she fell pregnant.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Tisy

Yorkshire (West Riding) / MARSHALL FAMILY OF BARNSLEY

Hi all,

I have just recently discovered that my paternal g-grandfather, William Henry Marshall, born 14 Apr 1857, was the illigimate son of Mary Marshall b. about 1835;  he took his mother's surname, and as far as I am aware, never named the father (his birth certificate does not list a father).  Henry William was born at the Union Workhouse, Gawber St., Barnsley;  in the 1871 census, he was living with his grandparents, Thomas and Bessy Marshall, at Burley Street, Barnsley.  His mother Mary was living with her brother George Marshall at this stage.

William Henry married Charlotte Bray on 14 April 1887, and they had five children;  Albert (1879), Walter (1887) William Henry (1890) Joseph Arthur (1899) and George.

Mary Marshall, William Henry's mother, was working as a domestic servant for Joseph and Elizabeth McLintock (Linen manufacturers) in 1851 (Pitt Street, Barnsley);  my aunt says that Joseph McLintock died in 1852, but I have not been able to find a death for him in BMD.  We have no idea what happened to Mary and William Henry between his birth in 1857 and when they turned up in the 1871 census.

Does anyone have this family in their tree?  Any help and advice as to how I could find out who William Henry's father was would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Tisy

Fife / JOHN GORDON B. 1808 at Aberdour, Fife
« on: Wednesday 26 November 08 04:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have at last managed to break down a huge brick wall, and have found another to take its place!

Lieutenant John Gordon b. 1808 at Aberdour, Fife, was the son of Boswell Gordon b. 1775 at Kinghorn, Fife and Helen Moyes.  He enlisted in the 91st Regiment of Foot in Dec 1825 and rose to the rank of Lieutenant.  He married Ann Flannagan at Manchester Cathedral in 1832 and they eventually were posted with the regiment to St Helena and then on to South Africa where John was killed in Dec 1850 at Fort Cox (Cape Colony) during the 8th Frontier War.  He was my daughters' g-g-g-g-grandfather.

Boswell Gordon was the son of William Gordon b. 1747 at Penninghame, Wigtown, and Barbara Henderson.

I am trying to go back further and possibly establish a link to the Boswells in the area;  the Boswell name has come down in three generations of the family.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Kind regards,

Tisy
