Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Charles BRISTOW(E) - Bratton - c1830
« on: Tuesday 25 August 09 12:27 BST (UK)  »
Working backwards from my Great Grandfather's death in Glasgow in 1919, aged 64, the records of which are very comprehensive. He was born in Bratton, Wiltshire about 1855.
My queries concern his mother and father.
His father's name was also Charles (a Farmer) who was married to Caroline Payne about 1850. I have been unable to find a marriage record.
On the 1841 census I have found a family Bristow living in Sheep Street, Whitehorse, Wiltshire, with Charles, aged 12, having been born outside the  county.
I am unable to access a full record of the 1851 census which would confirm his birthplace, so would appreciate any help. Any records in 1861/71 would also be of help.
Many thanks for your time

Occupation Interests / Voyage Records - NA - Is this correct?
« on: Wednesday 26 November 08 18:27 GMT (UK)  »
I recently visited the NA at Kew and came up with the following record of voyages undertaken by my GGG/father between 1836/1840.
His unique number was 8326 taken from BT120/1
This lead me to BT112/14-15 were I located, amongst 7 entries, the following:-

C(62)      22/8/1838      62/4570      BLACKALLER

Am I correct in assuming the transcription reads as follows:-
Not sure what the 'C' is telling me.
Does (62) represent Liverpool as the port of departure? The date presumably is either the start or end of the voyage.
Is the code 62/4570 the port of arrival + the unique voyage number?
The vessel's name was BLACKALLER.
Any help will be most welcome

Armed Forces / WW1 Medal
« on: Wednesday 03 September 08 17:49 BST (UK)  »
My wife's Great Uncle was a Private in the S. Lancs Regiment. He was killed on 24th Oct 1914 near Loos and is remembered at Le Touret Cemetry.
My question is:-
I have a bronze medal in the shape of a star inscribed 1914. There is a bronze bar on the ribbon with the dates '5th August - 22nd November 1914'. Are these dates relevant to a particular battle?
Thanks in advance

Celia has withdrawn her offer, so as a retired Liverpool (Mersey) Pilot I have a copy of John (PJH) Tebay's "List of Pilots - 1734 to 1990" in my possession. If anyone requires a 'look-up' I will be happy to oblige.

Dorset Lookup Requests / Wareham birth 1800? George Augustus COCKRAM
« on: Wednesday 23 July 08 20:24 BST (UK)  »
George Augustus (Capel) COCKRAM was a Master Mariner born in Wareham in 1800, according to the Merchant Navy records at Kew. He married Sarah Williams on 16th January 1827 at St James Church, Poole. They had four children to-gether, the first three of which were born in Poole. Two were christened at Skinner Street Independent, Poole. The third, my great grandfather, although born in Poole in 1832, was christened in West Derby, Liverpool on 22nd November 1835. The family had moved to Merseyside somewhere in between and were all listed on the 1841 census and living at Brunswick Place, Toxteth Park, Liverpool. By 1851 Sarah was a Master Mariner's widow and living with her daughter Emily and her husband John Roberts at 6 Church Street, Liverpool.
I have searched the OPC's for Wareham but have been unable to find his baptism record. Can anyone highlight my shortcomings!
He died shortly after the 1841 census but so far have been unable to trace his death record. Any ideas please?
His eldest son, also George Augustus, was a Junior Mariner in 1841 but has disappeared without trace. Does anyone know where I might find him?

Many thanks in advance
