Monmouthshire / Monmouth cemetery burial query
« on: Saturday 17 August 19 23:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm looking to track the burial of Dorothy Bowers and her family. There were from nearby Herefordshire originally, but lived in Monmouth on New Dixton Road  prior to and during WW2.

I've tried learning about burial registers in Monmouth, without success. The father Albert Bowers died in Nov 1943. Is anyone able to check Monmotuh cemetery burial indexes, or point me to them?

More info on Bowers here:

Many thanks,
matt

Herefordshire / Tupsley and surrounds - Dorothy BOWERS
« on: Sunday 28 July 19 05:28 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to work out where Dorothy BOWERS is buried. She published several books, and her death notice says she died 29 August 1948 (aged 42) in TUPSLEY.

I have not been able to trace her headstone, and no detailed biography exists to provide exact details. One biographical note states that she was buried near TUPSLEY "near her mother" - so there may be more than on BOWERS burial.

Anyone have access to Herefordshire burial indexes - and more specifically TUPSLEY - who could check for her burial?

Thanks,
matt

Australia / Need help - Eliza TEE nee HOY /SLACK
« on: Wednesday 21 March 18 18:13 GMT (UK)  »
I'm decent at solving problems but this one is breaking me.

Not an ancestry but in my tree - I want to trace back Eliza's origins:

In August 1843, Eliza SLACK married ex-convict William TEE by Banns with the consent from 'friends' (Eliza was under 21) - the marriage was probably in Bathurst but the bride and groom lived in O'Connell Plains.

While the marriage certificate stated her name to be Eliza SLACK, their daughter  Sarah TEE's birth certificate in 1857 states the mothers name to be "Eliza HOY afterwards TEE".

Eliza TEE died in 1871 aged 45 years of 'exposure and intemperence' in June 1871 on the road between Tambaroora and Hill End. Eliza's death certificate listed her father as "Samuel HOY, a soldier"  with mother not known. Eliza's place of birth is given as "Chesire, England" and had been 34 years in New South Wales, so arrived from overseas probably aged around 11 in 1836 or so.

Given this patchy information, it seems likely Eliza was born to a soldier named Samuel HOY, and arrived in NSW with her father/family when he was posted there. But why the name Eliza SLACK at marriage - it is possible that Eliza was a widower at marriage to William TEE, however this is not stated on the certificate, and given that she was 17 or so it seems unlikely - there are no marriages that fit in the NSW BDM records either. Furthermore, her death certificate doesn't list two marriages.

So perhaps Eliza was born to Samuel HOY and mother, and the mother re-married a man named SLACK when she was very young and Eliza acquired the surname.

Any ideas? I've really dug deep, but possibly the regimental association is making it tricky.

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Hough of Macclesfield St Michael
« on: Wednesday 21 March 18 17:48 GMT (UK)  »
I'm chasing a thread from an Australian/NSW family, based on the only information in a marriage certificate that Eliza SLACK was born in Cheshire and her father was Samuel HOY, SOLDIER, and born about 1825.

How she went from being born Eliza/Elizabeth HOY to Eliza SLACK is not yet understood and is part of the challenge.

At any rate, I have found the following birth in Cheshire and wonder if anyone can tell me if there's more in the entry (specifically occupation) or whether anyone can see any more info on the family based on other baptisms/deaths?

Name   Elizabeth Hough
Event Type   Christening
Event Date   18 Jun 1824
Event Place   St Michael, Macclesfield, Chester, England
Gender   Female
Father's Name   Samuel Hough
Mother's Name   Mary

Thanks,

Huntingdonshire Lookup Requests / Godmanchester 1818 lookup request
« on: Monday 04 January 16 03:29 GMT (UK)  »
Interested in details of baptism for Catherine Ann Coates, 1818 baptism at Godmanchester, parents Samuel and Mary Coates. I believe they are farming family hailing from Lincs and this baptism fits perfectly with a gap in the records (it is the only fit i can find).

Any COATES deaths in the parish around the time greatly appreciated also if they exist.

Thanks,
Matt

Worcestershire / A challenge - JONES 1920s in Upper Chase, Malvern
« on: Monday 10 February 14 04:22 GMT (UK)  »
All,

Helping a friend (Worcs is not my area of research) with a tricky problem.

Stevens Annuals (from 1910 to 1933) show John Jones occupied 'Frith Villa' from 1918 - 1927 (they adopted a girl we are interested in in 1920). It is assumed he died then as in 1928 it listed Mrs Jones as the occupier (but no initial).

SO how can I find out more about who this John and Mrs. Jones were? I've looked at 1911 for the street and didn't see them there (consistent with Stevens Annuals), but really don't know what other resources are out there... electoral rolls for example? I realise I'm not giving much. I can't even really understand what a 'villa' is - Google maps shows small-ish houses on the street.

There are a lot of John JONES deaths registered in Worcs in 1926/7... so it doesn't look like an easy path.

The little girls was adopted by them in 1920 after her mother died - her residence was 'No 1 Upper Chase, Malvern' according to death certificate. Just reinforces the address of the above.

Any advice, and any ideas welcome!

thanks,
matt
