Dorset / A Dorset highwayman??
« on: Thursday 13 January 22 16:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

One of  my ancestors, Joseph Jesse, was born 1726 in Burlstone, Dorset. He married Mary Arnold in 1753 in Chesebourne, Dorset. Believe they had 3 children, by 1755.
It is a story in the family that he was hanged as a highwayman c. 1755!

Believe buried 10.10.1757

Can anyone substantiate this story, and the above facts for me?
Am struggling to find anything else on him.
Many thanks

Europe / Rome, or London?
« on: Sunday 12 January 20 14:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hope this query is allowed, if not please advise.

My cousin died in Italy in December just gone.  I need to find her birth record.  We thought she may have been born in London, but my enquiry on BMD doesn't show it.  Its possible she was born in Rome.

Can you help me find her record?  I have her birth and death dates.

thank you very much.

World War Two / US Navy? Mystery gentleman with distinctive arm badge
« on: Saturday 28 December 19 15:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
Could anyone please identify this gentleman's area of service and what the arm badge tells us?

He served in Britain, possibly London, as he was known to one of my ancestors, however we know next to nothing about him and would like to find out more.

The photograph was taken in either Tampa or St. Petersburg, according to stamps on the reverse, but no date shown.

Thankyou for any guidance.

A merry Christmas and a happy New Year to you all.

Europe / Jesse ancestor - origin Brittany?
« on: Friday 14 June 19 16:57 BST (UK)  »
I have been going back to find the origins of my ancestors, who have the surname Jesse in Hampshire (Royal Navy men), before that in rural Dorset.

A couple of my Jesse ancestors were at Trafalgar, and on one of them his record in the National Archives for the Royal Navy says, to my surprise, born in France.  It would appear there are some names in Brittany: Jesse, Jessy.

Can anyone help guide me how to look into this further?
Many thanks.

Dublin / Searching for Estella Leontine Arigho
« on: Friday 04 January 19 15:07 GMT (UK)  »
Would appreciate assistance in finding the wife of an ancestor, she was married to a Louis Arigho (born in Switzerland).  She was born in France and her full name was Estella Leontine Lefebre.

I cannot find their marriage, but it could have been in France as Louis travelled from Switzerland via the Italian alps through France and ended up in Ireland.

They lived in Dublin. I have traced them as far as the 1911 Census, when they are both 67, with three of their children living with them. We have found Louis' death, but cannot find Estella's, or a grave for either of them. They were catholic, have searched the Irish church records but no luck.  I was wondering if there would have been an obituary for Louis or Estella/Stella/. Sometimes she was referred to as Ellen!

Louis was the brother of John Arigho, who we have found lots of information about.

Any advice or information would be gratefully received.

Thank you.

Hi, if anyone can do a look up for me, would be very grateful:

Ida Brown age 81 (b.1881)
Registered March 1962 so could be between January to April

I have the death certificate info, but wondered if there was any further information from a possible notice in the paper.....

Will be sending for the death certificate shortly, have only just stumbled upon it!

Any information gratefully received

Dublin / Arigho and Martin marriage, Dublin
« on: Sunday 31 July 16 17:19 BST (UK)  »
Have been trying to find Elizabeth Arigho's father's name, it could be either John or Louis Arigho. She married Thomas Martin on 14 Aug 1907.
Both John and Louis Arigho each had a daughter Eliza/Elizabeth!
Think it could be Louis as that was the name of their only son.
Can anyone advise how I could get this, short of sending off for a marriage certificate that I guess will give her father's name?  They may have married at church of SS Michael and John, Dublin.
Thank you for any advice.

Europe / Marriage between French lady, Swiss man
« on: Sunday 10 April 16 16:57 BST (UK)  »
I would be grateful for further information on my husband's ancestor research. So far we have found the following:

His grandmother's family name was Arigho. As they lived in Dublin, we have found, on census returns:

Thomas Martin married Eliza ARIGHO.
Her father was John Arigho, born Caneggio, Switz, who married (firstly) Ellen Ryan, in Dublin.
John had a brother Louis, also born Swiss, who married a French girl Maria Estella.
His father was Louis Arigho, born Swiss, married a French lady Leontine Lefevre.

Would love to find out where the last two French and Swiss couples - father and son - married - possibly Switzerland as the two brothers John and Louis were both born in Switzerland.  And the surname of Estella?

The Arigho family were also involved in printing bibles, we believe.

Any assistance gratefully received!
Thank you.

Could anyone please retore the photograph of my grandad, which shows him in 11th Hussar uniform pre WW1?  If anyone wants to colour it, I believe the uniform was dark blue.   Thank you.

It will be much appreciated.
