Scotland / Where might this be?
« on: Sunday 26 April 20 00:20 BST (UK)  »
This place of birth is taken from the 1861 census in Amble, Northumberland for Janet Richardson (nee Scott).  Ancestry have transcribed it as Briglands, FindMyPast have made no attempt at all and I’m struggling to find any location which might fit.

Does anyone have any idea, please?

World War One / Silver War Badge puzzle
« on: Monday 21 October 19 00:09 BST (UK)  »
The medal card relating to my friend’s grandfather shows him to have begun the war with the DLI, reg. no. 13126 and subsequently transferred to the Labour Corps, reg. no. 210583.

Having found this, I then cast around for any other information which might be available and came across two lists related to the medals, both confirming the above service. One also shows his date of discharge as 28/12/17.

Then I found a transcription of the Silver War Badge roll which shows his date of discharge as 27 Dec. 1917 and his current service no. as 210583.  So far so good but his Regiment/unit is given as Labour Corps: N.C.L.C ex 1st Yorks & L. and his old reg. no. as 30017.

Can I safely assume that this is a transcription error or is there some other possible reason why this information has been given.

World War One / What happened to these artefacts?
« on: Sunday 24 February 19 23:15 GMT (UK)  »
While searching local authority records for something entirely different I came across this minute -

10/7/1919  War Trophies

A letter from the Secretary of War offering -  1 helmet, 1 German wire cutter, 1 Austrian entrenching tool, 18 German rifles, 1 German carbine, 1 body armour, 1 bayonet, 1 Turkish bayonet and 1 German water bottle - allocated to this district and offered to the council for safe care and custody.
6 voted for and 8 against acceptance

Assuming that some local authorities did accept does anyone know what happened to all of these in later years?

World War Two / ATS Uniform
« on: Sunday 11 March 18 23:17 GMT (UK)  »
The young lady below is the great aunt of a friend of mine.  All he knows about her wartime life is that she was in the ATS.  Can anything else be gleaned from her uniform?

Northumberland / Researching at Woodhorn
« on: Saturday 13 May 17 01:00 BST (UK)  »
I have just been told that Woodhorn have abandoned their own readers card system and adopted the more widely used CARN.

If you haven't got a CARN card or (like me) you have one which is out of date then you will need to take photo ID and a utility bill along on your next visit in order to register.

World War One / Soldiers Effects – why advertise?
« on: Monday 12 December 16 23:01 GMT (UK)  »
My great uncle died in WW1 and, according to the register of Soldiers Effects, £2. 18s. 6d. went to his mother and 11s. 9d to his sister, Ann.

The register then says ‘Retd Sister Ann.  Payee refuses to accept. To be advertised’

Anyone know why they would be advertising and for what outcome?

The Common Room / Early 20th century prisoners
« on: Sunday 12 June 16 22:49 BST (UK)  »
I came across a 1916 newspaper article which outlined the conviction of four females.  The first got 3 months hard labour, the second 6 weeks and the other two were sentenced to 1 month in the second division.

Does anyone know what constituted hard labour for a woman and what the second division was (I’m guessing it’s not football   ;D )

Northumberland / Same couple or not and how to prove it
« on: Saturday 25 July 15 23:19 BST (UK)  »
As there’s a lot more on the ‘net now than a few years ago I decided to go in search of some of my missing persons.

One of these was Catherine Stoker born c 1724.  As an adult she lived in South Blyth, was married in Earsdon church and all her children were baptised there.  But I’d never found her baptism.

I found a suitable candidate living in North Blyth and baptised in Bedlington in 1725.  Her parents were Robert and Margaret Stoker and parish records showed that she had a twin brother, Robert.  There was no marriage for her parents and no sign of other siblings.

I made a mental note not to confuse her parents with a Robert and Margaret Stokoe from South Blyth who appear on the same branch of my tree at about the same time.  Then I looked more closely.

The S. Blyth Stokoes were married in Earsdon in 1721.  Their children baptised in Earsdon were – Ann 1722, John 1728, Aaron and Moses (twins) 1730, Benjamin 1732 and Margaret 1734.

There is a gap between 1722 and 1728 where the twins, Catherine and Robert, would sit nicely.  Also three of Catherine’s sons were named Aaron, Benjamin and John.  This makes me think that the Stokoes and the Stokers could possibly be the same.

BUT if that was the case why is she shown in Earsdon marriage records as Stoker when the rest of the family are shown in the same church records as Stokoe.

Any thoughts?

Technical Help / Why am I not the administrator of my computer?
« on: Wednesday 24 June 15 23:04 BST (UK)  »
I've had this new computer a few months now and have been learning to drive Windows 8.1 bit by bit as I've needed to.  The problem is that it seems to think I am not the administrator.

The only log-in option I have is as a user.  The opening screen has my name already there with no way of changing it and it waits for my password.  Obviously my name would be the same as administrator but it won't accept any other password - simply gives me a reminder of my user password.

The problem is that it won't allow me to download anything unless I put it in one of my personal folders.  Tonight I've been trying to renew my anti-virus software - the set-up icon is in my downloads file and I've been through the installation process but it hasn't overwritten the old information and I have no idea where it is or whether I am properly protected.   I also have a flash player update waiting to be installed but, again, it's not picking up on the old data and overwriting it - it wants to install the whole thing in My Documents.

Any ideas?
