Warwickshire / Birmingham Baptisms ...?
« on: Thursday 21 September 17 19:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I was wondering if I could ask for some advice, please?! I am searching for a Birmingham baptism from 1910-1915. I have checked the transcriptions on Ancestry but the person isn't on there, but I doubt if Ancestry has all the baptisms of all the churches in Birmingham, or it may have taken place after 1912.

The child in question was born in the Birmingham Workhouse Infirmary in 1910, and in 1911 census she isn't listed as living with her parents, although she did later live with them.

I am not in a position to visit Birmingham myself, but are there any other online records that I could search, or would it be best to request a search be made via Birmingham Library?

Apologies for vagueness - happy to share info if required!

Many thanks!

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / HOLBOROW Lookup in Siston PRs - BRISTOL ARCHIVES
« on: Friday 24 February 17 13:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

I was wondering if I could please request a lookup from the Siston parish registers directly at the Glos Bristol Archives? (For some reason neither Siston nor Tormarton are covered by the collection online at Ancestry.)

I am interested in mentions of the HOLBOROW/HOLBROW/HULBRO/HALBROW/etc family there. I believe a William Holborow was baptised there in 1742, along with his siblings Martha (1744), Daniel (1747) and Joseph (1750), all children of William and Elizabeth. I was wondering if there are any additional comments about the family (occupation, place of residence) or any additional branches of the family that may have been baptised, married or buried there.

Many thanks in advance.

Edit: Location amended!

Australia / Will of John Isaac HOLBOROW, 1881, Sydney
« on: Friday 10 October 14 21:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am hoping that somebody can help ... or offer some advice! I've never ordered a will from Australia before so would like to ask a couple of things before I do so! :D

John Isaac Holborow died 23 July 1881 in Sydney, NSW (he lived in Waterloo, I believe). I have a copy of his death certificate and his marriage certificate and neither are particularly fulsome when it comes to parentage! (His death certificate names a father and mother but I can't find a marriage in England for those names so wonder if the informant only gave the best info they had.)

Searching on the State Records website for NSW I found a will for a John Isaac Holborrow with the same death date as the death certificate. Now, I don't mind spending the £30 or waiting for it to be despatched and arrive, but I wondered if anyone had ever ordered an Australian will from this time or had any thoughts about what to expect ... It is listed as part of 'Series 3' and 'Probate Packet'. I have no problem with emailing the Western Sydney Records Centre in Kingswood and asking them, but thought I'd give it a shot here first! :)

I'm trying to fit this gentleman in with the UK Holborow family and am hoping that there might be some clues in his will to possible siblings or nephews/nieces!

Many thanks,

Dominic

Hi,

I was wondering if anybody is planning to visit the Gloucester Archives and had space on their research list for a look-up request!  :D

I have a Joseph Holborow in my tree, with an estimated birth year of 1787 and location of Oldbury on the Hill, Gloucestershire. I believe that his parents are Henry and Mary (nee Smith). I came across a Sarah Holborow, daughter of Henry and Mary who died in 1792 in Ozleworth aged 13.

These are the only two children I have come across as possible children of Henry and Mary.

I was wondering if anybody would be kind enough to look at the PRs for Oldbury and Ozleworth from 1777 to c.1800 for any baptisms/burials of any Holborows (often spelt Holbrow or Holborough or Holbrough ...).

Many thanks!

Australia / Australian Marriage Certificates
« on: Wednesday 02 April 14 13:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I don't know if anyone can help me, but I have a bit of a conundrum! I have found two marriage entries in Sydney. Looking at the codes, one is for a Catholic church and one a Church of England. I suspect that it was the bride who was Catholic and not the groom.

I can't afford to buy them both at this time, so was hoping somebody might be able to tell me if the certificates are likely to contain vastly different amounts of information? I am particularly looking for ages/dates of birth/parental details.

(Meant to say that this is for a marriage in 1844!)

Many thanks!

Dominic

(Hopefully I'm doing this right!)

I'm visiting the Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre in Chippenham on Thursday of this week. Happy to do any look-ups once I've completed my own searches!

If you can please let me know as much detail as possible for each request, and if there is a specific document in their archive then please let me have the full reference code for it!

Regards,

Dom

London and Middlesex / HOLBROW, Thomas & John, Clerkenwell
« on: Sunday 12 January 14 12:46 GMT (UK)  »
I'm currently working on researching the surname Holborow/Holbrow (from my maternal line) and came across a Canadian WWI death for an Albert Henry Mander Holbrow. I was able to trace his line back to his father (Thomas William Holbrow 1851-1928), and then to Thomas' father (also Thomas).

Thomas (senior) was born c.1825 and consistently gives his place of birth as Clerkenwell in census returns. In 1841 he is residing in St James Clerkenwell with his brother John. Thomas' marriage certificate (married 1848 in Westminster St Anne Soho to Emma Cass) gives his father as John. Brother John was born c.1822 and his place of birth varies in the census returns (Holborn, Kingsland).

I've searched the London Baptisms on Ancestry and can find neither Thomas nor John searching for any variation of Holborow/Holbrow. I can't find John Senior in a census return on Ancestry or FindMyPast, but neither of the marriage certificates of his sons mark him as deceased.

I'd very much like to tie the two brothers and their father into my current Holborow/Holbrow researches but am a bit stuck!

If anybody has any other suggestions then I would be extremely grateful! :)

Hi,

I would be very grateful for any assistance in tracking down the baptism of the following, please!

My ancestress (maiden name Ann Halliday) had an illegitimate child before she married. In the 1841 census the child is enumerated as George Marsh (the same name as a local farmer - coincidence?!), but I have also seen him as George Marsh Halliday.

I believe that he was born c.1834 in Leighterton, Gloucestershire (Boxwell with Leigtherton), but it could have been Tetbury.

If anybody is going to the Gloucestershire Records Office and could add this to their list that would be great!

Many thanks,

Dominic

Dorset Lookup Requests / West Lulworth Parish Register Look-up MURRAY/MOREY
« on: Friday 29 April 11 16:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am researching my Murray/Morey ancestors and have found that they came from the Lulworths (and swapped around between East & West a fair bit!). The Dorset OPC site has been fantastic, as has Martin White's West Lulworth site.

Unfortunately the online baptism transcriptions for West Lulworth start at 1813. Using a variety of sources, I am reasonably certain that I have been able to go back to John Murray/Morey (the two names seem to be used pretty interchangeably for many, many years) who was buried in West Lulworth in 1813. His rough birth year (from age at death) would have been 1756.

I've checked the East Lulworth records and John doesn't appear. However, in 1758 there is a George Morey baptised, the son of George Morey and Elizabeth. This seems to fit with a marriage in 1754 between George Morey of Tyneham and Elizabeth Tuxbury (Tewkesbury) in East Lulworth.

I can't find a baptism for George in Tyneham or the surrounding parishes, but I'd like to confirm the parentage of John first, and also see if there are any mentions of where the family might be from originally. (They don't appear in the oldest Lulworth registers, nor in those for Tyneham.)

If anybody is planning a visit to Dorset Record Office, or if anyone has access to the pre-1813 West Lulworth registers, could I please ask for a look-up from around 1756 to see if there is a John Murray/Morey?

Many thanks!

Dominic
