Glamorganshire / 1851 Census for Eglwysilan
« on: Monday 22 March 21 19:51 GMT (UK)  »
I have a number of family members who lived in and around Eglwysilan in 1851 but are missing from the Census.  I have looked up another family member who IS in the Census on Ancestry.Com and then I changed the Enumeration District and have been all the way through from District 1 to District 7 and couldn't find my 3 x Great Grandfather.  I will start on the districts around the village but my query is - was there ever a District 6?  I've trawled Districts 1, 2, 3a, 3b, 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b and 7 but then I realised there is no District 6 mentioned on Ancestry.  Does anybody know if this is because it is missing/destroyed or because it doesn't exist?  My Find my Past subscription has just expired and I can't check on there.  When you look up what Census records are missing for 1851, Eglwysilan isn't mentioned.  Thanks in advance any help gratefully received.

Wales / Welsh to English Translation Please
« on: Saturday 27 November 10 22:08 GMT (UK)  »
I cannot find the right translation for the following.  I can understand some Welsh but this stumped even the translation websites:-

Mewn parchus.  Coffadviriaetham JOHN RADCLIFFE o'r Uplands Llanddidian yr hwn y fu farw Mai 10 1903  yn 61 oed

which came out in English as:-

In respectable. JOHN RADCLIFFE Uplands Llanddidian Coffadviriaetham of whom died May 10th 1903 aged 61

Can anybody tell me what Coffadviriaetham means please?

Census and Resource Discussion / Genealogy Website Subscriptions
« on: Sunday 07 November 10 21:46 GMT (UK)  »
There's probably been lots of chat on here about which Genealogy Website to take up a subscription to but I'm having difficulty deciding.  I've narrowed it down to ancestry.co.uk or thegenealogist.co.uk (I think).  Most of my research will be for Glamorgan (I live in Berkshire) or Northumberland and County Durham so I need to pick the one which will be of the most use to me.  I can get back to Glamorgan whenever I need (although getting around to visit both the families takes a lot of our weekend) but never never been to Northumberland or County Durham (now there's an idea for a holiday!).

Any suggestions or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Glamorganshire / Christopher Family, Llantrithyd, Glamorgan
« on: Tuesday 02 November 10 23:01 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for information on my ancestor Morgan Christopher (wife poss Margaret?) b 1685 and son John Christopher from Llantrithyd.  I have worked out that John was born in 1710 but found a family tree for somebody else who thinks he was born in 1721 and don't know how to find out for sure.  John was married to Jane John b 1725.  Found a website

http://homepages.tesco.net/~christopherfamilyhistory/WALES.htm

but this gives quite a few Morgan Christophers in Llantrithyd as follows:-

Priscilla CHRISTOPHER (F)............. C: 26 Nov 1738
Father: Morgan Christopher Llantrithyd, Glamorgan, Wales
John CHRISTOPHER (M).................. M: 11 May 1739 Llantrithyd Psh., Glamorgan,
Jane CHRISTOPHER (F).................. C: 20 Apr 1740
Father: Morgan Christopher Llantrithyd, Glamorgan, Wales
Elizabeth CHRISTOPHER (F)............. C: 30 Aug 1745
Father: Morgan Christopher Llantrithyd, Glamorgan, Wales
Thomas CHRISTOPHER (M)................ C: 24 Apr 1811
Father: Morgan Christopher Llantrithyd , Glamorgan, Wales
Mother: Ann

and even more in Glamorgan who may be related.

Any help would be appreciated.

Glamorganshire / Rev Daniel Jones, Rector, Ystradowen
« on: Thursday 28 October 10 22:14 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find information on Reverend Daniel Jones of Elan Cottage in Ystradowen, Glamorgan.  I think he was born in 1807 and I have a copy of the family bible which states that he died on 15 Oct 1886 in Ystradowen, Glamorgan and his death is the first entry.  He was the Rector of St Owain's Church in Ystradowen.  I am trying to find out who his closest relatives were because the next entry is the death of David Thomas at Fishweir Farm, St Mary Church in 1924 (although there is a gap left in-between the two entries).  David was married to Catherine Jones so maybe Catherine and Daniel were related?  Any help greatly appreciated. :)
