Hi folks!

Long time since I've been on here, hope everyone is doing well.  I'll take time out to have a browse through the latest restoration projects, I continue to be delighted by your wonderful work.

I've finally managed to lay my hands on a photo of my great grandparents, and it's unfortunately damaged across the middle.  I wondered if any of you fabulous folks on here would be kind enough to restore it for me?  Scanned at 600dpi, hope it's ok for you to work with.

My belief is that it's their wedding pic, which would have been 1902 but if anyone thinks otherwise, your comments would be much appreciated  ;D

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Boston Passenger List Lookup
« on: Wednesday 05 August 09 16:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

I'd be delighted if anyone can help me with a Boston Passenger List 1820-1943 lookup as I don't have worldwide access, pretty please!

I've got a missing ancestor and I think I may have found his wife and kids returning from Boston to the UK in 1891, but hubby is not with them.

Ancestry has an entry for a Boston arrival and the transcription details for his name are recorded as JAMES BALBARNEY.  If this is my missing man, it's just another transcription error or weird and wonderful spelling of the surname, which I've come to expect to be honest!

I'd be eternally grateful, a thousand thanks in advance if anyone could help me out.

FH Documents and Artefacts / Dating Bible
« on: Sunday 07 June 09 22:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

I specifially didn't put this in the family bible section, as while this bible belonged to my grandmother, it's not what I'd call a 'family' bible and the only help I'm looking for is to date it, so I hope this thread is ok in here.

There appears to be absolutely no date on it, which I find odd that the publisher didn't include it.  Anyhow, if anyone can help, or point me in the right direction to investigate further, I'd be very grateful.

I have the following details to hand:

Browns Self Interpreting Bible
written by Reverend John Brown

with comments/additions by the late Reverend John Eadie and Reverend Robert Young

full colour plates by John Leighton FSA

published by William MacKenzie, London, Glasgow, Edinburgh

I can't seem to find any precise info re the publishers and when they might have stopped publishing - I've come across internet mentions of them, and their books all seem to be around 1870 but I'm not taking that as read.  It's a huge book, really thick, leatherbound and the pages are gilt edged.

Fingers crossed someone out there can help, thanks in advance!

Aberdeenshire / Duthie Family
« on: Sunday 15 March 09 13:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hi folks!

I've just spent the better part of the morning compiling a lot of census information and GROS certificates for a branch of the Duthie tree.  As I obviously had too much to drink last night, I was very careless in my research, and have now discovered it looks like they are not 'mine' after all, if the information on John's death certificate is to be taken as fact  ::) :o

If the information rings bells with you or you feel it may be your folks, please let me know, I would be glad to share the fruits of this morning's work with you if it helps build somebody else's tree!!

John Collison Duthie, born c. 1826 son of John Duthie and Isabella Will (according to 1905 death cert)
Place of birth varies between Kincardineshire and Aberdeenshire on different census)

married

Euphemia Auld, born c. 1825, daughter of Allan Auld and Mary Gibson (according to 1902 death certificate)  Place of birth according to census is Aberdeenshire, LDS SUBMITTED entry states Dumfries.

I have record of their 12 children (1 adopted) and relevant census information.  Also have John and Euphemia's death certificates and their adoptive child's birth certificate.

Please shout if you want this info, I'd hate for it to go to waste.  I'm blooming annoyed at myself, particularly because I was starting to like this family  ::) ;D

Scotland / Hendrys missing on census - HELP!
« on: Sunday 11 January 09 16:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone

I've been driving myself batty looking for these guys on the 1891 census and I'm now at the point where I don't know if I've missed something obvious as my head is spinning!!

Would anyone out there be kind enough to give me a helping pair of eyes, looking for the following family:

George Hendry            -  born 1859 in Kinneff & Caterline, Kincardineshire usual occupation Farm Servant/Ag Lab
Helen Hendry               - wife, born 1860 in Frach/Forfar, Angus
Lawrence Hendry        - son, born 1884 in Brechin, Angus
George Hendry            - son, born 1890 in Brechin, Angus

I've tried searching under the variations of Hendrie and Henry, resorting to Hen* wildcard, but nothing coming up that's convincing.  I did find a Lawrence, as a child inmate, but no sign of the rest of the family so I'm not taking the inmate record as given.

I have the family, including Lawrence and brother George, plus younger siblings, on the 1901 census living at Montrose Road, Brechin, so I'd be surprised to find they weren't in the area for the last census, but hey, I know nothing is sure!!

Thanks in anticipation guys n gals!

Hi everyone!

Bet you thought you'd seen the last of me  ;D  But no, I'm back looking for the favour of all you wonderful restorers!

Mum came across 3 pictures of ladies in our Barrie line, and they've obviously been cut for lockets.  I'll post them seperately, but I'd be really grateful for a clean up, date, and if possible, a way to make the photos look whole, to make up for the fact that they've been cut down for the lockets......  You know me, I'll be very grateful for your help!  :-*  The photos were emailed to me, but they were scanned at 600 for you.

Scotland / SP Fraud Prevention
« on: Saturday 25 October 08 11:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

Long story cut short, someone I had been doing some research for has had a major privacy paranoia attack and is now regretting the work I have done.

The issue that has been raised is the fact that anyone can essentially purchase an extract of birth certificate via Scotlands People.  Obviously births within the last 100 years can't be obtained online, but at a cost of £10 they can have the extract forwarded to them.

The family for whom I've been researching is aghast at this on the basis of fraud, identity theft etc. I've taken a look and can't see anything specifically detailing this, but I assume that SP and the GRO record all extracts provided and share this with other establishments to avoid fraud.

Does anyone have anything more specific or perhaps have a link you can share?
