Hertfordshire / Is anyone going to Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies soon?
« on: Friday 16 September 16 15:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I live in Australia & I am researching Australian soldiers who died in WW1 & are buried in the UK for this website
http://ww1austburialsuk.weebly.com/

I am currently researching Percy William Toogoood who enlisted in England with 1st King Edward's Horse, service number 653.

According to the UK Army Registers of Soldiers’ Effects it states he committed suicide yet the newspapers in Australia report that he died from wounds received in action. It would be a big mistake to say he committed suicide if in fact he didn't.

I have contacted the Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies & they advise that there are 2 newspaper items for Trooper Toogood:
 1)   A picture in the Herts Advertiser of Trooper Toogood in the 9 January 1915 edition
2)   A report of the funeral of Trooper Toogood in the 4 September 1915 edition of the Hertfordshire Mercury.

The Archives want £15 or a copy of each newspaper article for £10 per item. I have around 2,000 soldiers to research & can't justify paying that much money.

SO if anyone is going to the Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies soon & would be able to help me out with the 2 newspaper items - it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Cathy

Hi
I am researching all the Australian Soldiers that died in WW1 & are buried in the UK for this website
http://ww1austburialsuk.weebly.com/

I am currently researching Gunner Herbert George FLAXMAN, 25632, Australian Field Artillery who died on 25th November, 1918 & was buried in Southern Cemetery, Manchester, England.

From researching - the Cemetery Headstone Transcriptions on Ancestry have this information
Herbert George Flaxman died 25 Nov 1918 Buried Rookwood Cemetery Section - RRR Row 7 Plot 328 Old Church of England with an inscription of "Gnr. Bert. Our bro. Killed on active Service."

Just wondering if anyone is going to Rookwood soon & may be able to have a look & take a photo for me to go with the 9-10 page word document biography I am doing for the website

Thanks for your time
Cathy

Hello
I am emailing from Australia & I am researching Pte George Mole, service number 14620742, of The King's Own Scottish Borderers Airborne,  who was killed in a Glider crash on 4th April, 1944 at Warnford, Hampshire. All occupants of the Glider died (26).

I have a photo of his headstone in Durrington Cemetery, Wiltshire.

I am trying to find details of his birth - CWGC lists him as the son of William Frederick and Janet Campbell Berry Mole, of Glasgow.

Any other information would also be appreciated

Thank you
Cathy

Hello
I am in Australia & I am trying to locate a photo of the headstone of Alexander Peter Imlay (1885 - 1959).

He served in World War 1 with A.I.F. (Australian Imperial Force). He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order with Bar & was Mentioned in Despatches.

In 1921 he joined the Gordon Highlanders, British Army as Captain & in 1930 transferred to the Royal Indian Army Service Corps. He retired in 1937.

He was reappointed in 1940 as Major for service during World War 2.

He died on 23 April, 1959 at Skene, Aberdeen, Scotland, survived by his wife and children.

Can someone please point me in the direction of where I may be able to find out where he was buried?  and where I may be able to obtain a photo of his headstone?

Many thanks
Cathy

« on: Monday 20 July 15 05:05 BST (UK)  »
Hello
I am trying to find someone who would be willing to take a photo of Bulford War Memorial for me or if they know someone that can help out please.

I have located one photo on Geograph.org by Chris Talbot but I need photos of the names on the War Memorial so that I can transcribe them for the Wiltshire OPC website
http://www.wiltshire-opc.org.uk/genealogy/

Trying to gather as many photos of all the War Memorials & Roll of Honour plaques inside the parish churches in Wiltshire  so that they can be transcribed.

Only one small problem - I live in Australia  :o

Thanks for reading this

Wiltshire / IMBER
« on: Thursday 16 July 15 05:18 BST (UK)  »
Is anyone visiting Imber in August ???

I volunteer on the Wiltshire OPC website & look after the page for Imber.

http://www.wiltshire-opc.org.uk/genealogy/index.php/parish-directory/item/210-imber

I am trying to find as many photos of the headstones that are in the Churchyard so that I can transcribe them & have a good collection of photos in  one place.

Unfortunately I live in Australia so taking my own photos is not possible.

I have found only about 10 photos of headstones on Find a Grave.

If anyone is going to Imber - would they please take some photos of the headstones - looking at trying to get them all. I will credit the photos to the photographer. Also I need them to be high resolution so that I can read them for transcribing.

Can anyone please help ??

Thanks Cathy
