Armed Forces / Roger Griffiths (Seaweed)
« on: Monday 29 August 22 11:47 BST (UK)  »
I am very sad to inform you that our member Roger Griffiths aka (seaweed) passed away on 10 August. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.
He was a very knowledgeable and humble man whom I had the privilege to call my friend.
I know he has helped so many on here with maritime related, especially, Merchant Navy research and he will be very much missed.
Roger was involved in all kinds of research work both on and offline. I remember working with him and a very small team in researching Reginald Earnshaw – the youngest service casualty of WW2 where his knowledge was invaluable.
Roger – my friend – I wish you fair winds and a following sea and I will see you one day in Fiddler’s Green. RIP.

Lanarkshire / Patrick Findlay b.12.7.1925 - Glasgow
« on: Wednesday 31 March 21 19:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I have a merchant navy crew list stating that Patrick Findlay spelt Fundlay in the document was a member of the crew of the Swedish ship TABERG torpedoed and sunk in 1941. The document only states his name, date and place of birth 12.7.1925, Glasgow. He was not a survivor and was only 16 years of age. I would be grateful if anyone could do better than me at finding any information on him or his family. I know the details of the sinking but have nothing on the lad and there is nothing in the MN records. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
Regards
Hugh

World War Two / Merchant Seaman commemorated on local war memorial
« on: Friday 03 October 08 23:10 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Looking for some advice as to how to find out more about a Merchant Navy seaman commemorated on a local war memorial.

His name is Quartermaster J. Hatton and he is commemorated on Durness War Memorial (1939-1945) in Sutherland. I cannot find a reference to him on the CWGC site only a JJ Hatton Radio Officer. I have no further information.

I am aware that Merchant Seamen may not be commemorated by the CWGC or the Tower Hill Memorial if they were lost in non military operations or maritime accidents.

I know the info is scant but any help would be most appreciated.

Regards
Hugh
