Devon / Lydia Yates Coombe born about 1823 Tavistock
« on: Saturday 26 October 19 00:43 BST (UK)  »
Good evening to all. This is my first venture to Devon and hoping for some help in tracing my ggg grandparents, Thomas Scoble and Lydia Coombe. I have all of their census details and burials and am now searching for their baptisms.

From their marriage certificate Lydias father was Thomas Coombe, a labourer and from the 1851 census and 1871 census her mother was Sarah also born in Tavistock.

I can find, on IGI  various children baptised in Tavistock to a Thomas Coombe and Sarah but no sign of Lydia?

Essex / Thorndon Hall records
« on: Thursday 01 February 18 23:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, this is my first trip to Essex  ;D I'm hoping to get some advice on researching the most interesting person in my tree.
His name was John Blake and he was appointed  Governer of Northumberland County Gaol in 1787,having previously seemingly never existed.
All of my searching came to nought until i found a reference to him in a book entitled,Pedigrees of Northumberland which stated that he had been in service to Lady Petre at Thorndon in Essex.
Now, Lady Petre at the time was Anne Howard, wife of the 9th Baron and she  died January 1787 so i assume John had left/was dismissed from service.
I'm intrigued to discover just what kind of service qualified him to such take a highly responsible job and would welcome any advice on further reading, location of documents or just general thoughts.
 Thanks for reading,Pete  :)

Hi all, does anyone know the location of the above?
I have notes from the archives of two burials to look up and seem to remember from maps at the time that this graveyard was located slightly west of the Priory.Looking at a map now i can find no sign of it.  :-\

« on: Saturday 18 December 10 15:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, just been over to the records office to look up a marriage in 1736. The bride and groom have, what appears to be, " j c " noted after their names, while others on the page have "ambo" after theirs.
Does anyone know what these mean?
