Northumberland / Thistleridge Norham c1670's
« on: Wednesday 23 January 19 23:49 GMT (UK)  »
On my quest to find our PERCY's I trolled through England, Northumberland, Parish Registers, 1538-1950 for Norham on a loose lead.

When trying to locate Thistleridge on the map there wasn't a successful outcome...anyone got any ideas as to where this place is?

Cheers

Northumberland / Christina PERCY -1892, Berwick
« on: Tuesday 15 January 19 00:59 GMT (UK)  »
Good Morning All :)
I have a loose end that I'm hoping could be resolved here.
One Thomas PERCY b. 1872, Berwick Upon Tweed, married one Christina JOHNSTONE b. 1876, Tweedmouth when they found she was pregnant, in March qtr 1892. She was a servant at the time at 1 Yard Heads, and he was an Apprentice Mason, living with parents at Weatherly Square.

Thomas (19 years) was fined for the upkeep of his wife (16 years) when she was about to be 'confined', although her mother apparently wrote a letter stating that her parents would keep her until he had finished his apprenticeship (Berwick Advertiser article - 17 June 1892).

Thomas died the following year, but I've not been able to locate a death notice as to what happened to him as yet. So young Christina with a newborn, Christina PERCY b. July-Sep qtr 1892, Berwick is now .... living with her parents? in the Workhouse? as Christina was when the court was petitioned for her upkeep.

I'm having a struggle locating either of the Christina's in the 1901 / 1911 census records, so hoping for some fresh eyes, or Berwick Workhouse record access if possible.

Cheers,
Fiona

Northumberland / Margaret PERCY or HOGG, 1832
« on: Saturday 05 January 19 22:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,
Due to the date of my query, I'm not sure if Northumberland or Durham would be the right place to post... on that note though I'm wondering if anyone has access to the Tweedmouth Parish Church records (St Bartholomew and St Boisil).

Years ago I was given some information regarding Margaret HOGG, supposed illegitimate daughter of Robert PERCY and Mary HOGG. Baptised 25 November 1832, at the above location.

Upon doing further research I have found a baptism record that has her named as Margaret PIERCY, daughter of Robert PIERCY and Mary HOGG. Yet when I look for her in any census records there are a couple of records of Margaret and Mary HOGG together. Specifically in the Spittal area, where the PERCY family resides at the same time.

The issue that I have, is that it looks like another Margaret HOGG is baptised 31 January 1832 (same year) to another Mary HOGG (no father), yet in Hexham.

I'd like to clarify if she was given the PERCY name, or lived as a HOGG, so that I can follow her further.

Cheers :)

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Arnold transportation to Australia 1844-1851
« on: Wednesday 21 November 18 23:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,
Now that I have narrowed down the years between which William ARNOLD more than likely would have been transported to Australia I was trying to verify a convict record that has been linked to him - one William ARNOLD arrived in 1845 to Van Diemens land onboard the Pestonjee Bomanjee, but his conduct record states that he is 18 years old. Which can't be correct as he is a married man with 5 children.

I know that in 1841 he is listed in the Cutsdean Census as a hatter with wife Elizabeth and 3 children. 1843 and 1845 his wife had two further children. In the 1851 Cutsdean Census, wife Elizabeth is Head of the household and listed as a Widow. In 1853 she and all children immigrate to Hobart Tasmania Jas Radcliffe as the applicant.

So upon searching the Tasmanian Convict Names Index, and other sources I reach a dead end, presumably because the name may be not listed / transcribed as ARNOLD. Alternatives searched have been ARNOL / ARNEL / YARNOLD / YARNELL.

So I was wondering if there are any court records or transportation records at the beginning end that could shed some light on this man's move to Australia.

Cheers,
Fiona

Midlothian / Jane DAVIS (?) c1881, Leith
« on: Monday 29 January 18 04:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

I think I have exhausted all the avenues available to me in finding this young lady.
I have her listed with her family on the 1891 Scotland census living at 14 Coburg Street, North Leith. It states that she is the daughter of Joseph and Agnes DAVIS, a scholar, aged 10 years and born in N. Leith also (c.1881).

The issue that I'm having is that there are no records of a birth for a Jane DAVIS from 1870 - 1890 in Leith to those parents. Neither have I been able to locate her in any another census with her parents or siblings other than 1891. I am unable to locate a death or marriage record either.

So with those limitations, I began wondering if her name was actually DAVIS at her birth.
Her mother is Agnes DAVIDSON, daughter of William (a seaman) and Agnes.

Agnes DAVIDSON is located on the 1871 Scotland census at 21 Broad Wynd St, South Leith, and the 1881 Scotland census at 15 Old Church Street, North Leith. Although I believe this record has been mistranscribed as it shows Agnes as the daughter of the head of the household, who was, in fact, James WIGHT and wife Isabella. Though another Agnes DAVIDSON was also listed above her as the wife of a Seaman (currently at sea).

This census record shows Agnes DAVIDSON as unmarried (though may have been pregnant at the time with Jane - but that's pure speculation).

Agnes DAVIDSON had a child - William DAVIS in Nov 1882 and was married to Joseph DAVIS (Riveter) in Dec of that year. In the 1885/86 Valuation Rolls, she and Joseph are still living at 15 Old Church Street, N. Leith, as is her father William DAVIDSON (Seaman).

Son William is also in the 1891 census with parents Joseph and Agnes and Jane and is aged 8 years, along with other siblings Joseph (6), Mary (4), and Agnes (2). All born in N Leith and all birth records located.

Interestingly, I am unable to locate Joseph DAVIS (b. 1859, Ireland) in the 1881 census to check whether he was in Leith during that time to confirm or deny if he is the father of Jane or not. He has siblings in Govan at the time - John, James, and Hall all living together with others also in Govan.

So any ideas from any super sleuths out there??   ;D

In anticipation,
Fiona

Midlothian / George Cairncross DAVIS
« on: Wednesday 02 August 17 03:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi again,
Is there anyway to find out who lived at 67 Dalhousie Street Glasgow in 1922? Particularly if it was someone with surname Rankin? The transcription of the electoral rolls don't have all the address, just names and image - so trying to narrow the search if possible.

Ta,
Fiona

Midlothian / Hall DAVIS and Helen McINTYRE
« on: Sunday 30 July 17 06:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,
This one has me a bit stumped in couple of ways...so hoping someone can help me unravel it a bit more.

I've trolled through SP, Anc, & FS to follow Hall DAVIS b c.1861, Lurgan, Co.Down, Ireland, through the 1871 / 1881 / 1891 census, but when I get to 1901 and beyond it gets a little tricky.

1901 has a Hall DAVIES with Helen and son James
Registration Number:      685/3
Registration district:      Canongate
Civil Parish:         Edinburgh Iron Church
County:            Midlothian

Whilst 1911 has Hall DAVIS with Helen, and children, Hall and Helen
Registration Number:      646/2
Registration district:      Govan
Civil Parish:         Govan
County:            Lanarkshire

This census says the couple has been married for 12 years (so together since 1900) but son Hall b. 1902, birth certificate has him listed as illegitimate. I have yet to locate their daughter, Helen b. 1907 birth to clarify if she too was illegitimate. So at this stage no marriage has been located although Hall's death certificate - 1930, has Helen McIntyre listed as his widow.

The 1911 census also says only two children had been born - so this is where I am stumped with connecting them to the previous 1891 census with child James, to see whether he is this couples child or not, or to see if it is the same couple as the 1911 census.

So I tried to follow James before and after 1901 but to no avail...and no other 1901 census for Hall by himself or with Helen if they had been together since c.1900 (whether married or not).

So can anyone help me unravel this a little more if possible?

Kindly,
Fiona

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Marriage cert help
« on: Sunday 16 July 17 07:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,
I'm just trying to clarify the parents of a married couple - Alexander McPHEE and Margaret CROSS.
I read them as Hugh McPHEE and Mary DOUGLAS and John CROSS and Mary WALKER. Does that look right to others?

« on: Monday 30 January 17 09:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,
Is there anyone with access to Rochdale 1911 Census info willing to do a look up for me?
Mary TODD b. Jan-Mar 1903, Rochdale. With no other info its been a little tough finding her for that year to search for her parents.

I have further info on her spouse / children etc which come later on but nothing from early on.
