« on: Thursday 27 August 09 19:07 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone attended one of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints family history open days? The church in my local area is advertising one in a couple of weeks, what are they like, what facilities will they have for research, and are they worth attending? Thanks for any information.

Family History Beginners Board / Incomplete G.R.O.
« on: Tuesday 30 October 07 16:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi can anyone advise please. I've been looking at the B.M.D. on ancestry for a marriage and on finding a likely date/place I find that there are only 3 individuals listed for ref.F15 P403 Q4 1839. Is it likely to be a transcribing error or would there be a missing entry in the G.R.O. files. Will applying for the certificate clear it up one way or another?
Thanks for your advice.

« on: Wednesday 25 July 07 20:51 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help, I am trying to locate a birth certificate for Caroline Smith born c1850 either in Deenethorpe or upper/lower Benefield. I have found a couple of likely GRO ref numbers, would the  Registration District be Peterborough or Thrapston in 1850?

Many thanks for any help.

Family History Beginners Board / Why are they not in the GRO?
« on: Monday 11 December 06 20:47 GMT (UK)  »
I have been searching for some folks who appeared in the 1881 census, from which I have their places of birth and ages. However even armed with this information I still can't seem to be able to locate their records of birth in the GRO.

The 1881 census inmates of the Wallingford Union Workhouse,
Caroline Dixey (I have her details).

Emma Dixey age 9yrs (c1871-1872) born Maidenhead Berks.
Mary A Dixey age 6yrs (c1874-1875) born    "          "    "   "
Geo Dixey age 1yr (c1879-1880) born Wallingford (Union)
Harriet Dixey age 5yrs (c1875-1876) born Greenford Middlesex.
Kezia Dixey age 43yrs (c1837-1838) born Moulsford Berks.

I tried some lateral thinking and found George Dixon born Q1 1880 Wallingford 2c/338.

I don't know who Kezia Dixey is but guess that she is the mother of the four children, and have discovered a Kezia Winfield married Q4 1856 Wallingford 2c/272. to either Thos Dawson, Thos Stroudley, or Ezekiel Martin.

I have also found the death record of an Ezekiel Martin age 34yrs Q2 1868 Faringdon 2c/154.

Also the birth of Emma Jane Martin Q3 1869 in Maidstone 2a/559.
This would mean that she couldn't have been the daughter of Ezekiel but could still have his name.

Does any of this make any sense or am I making too many assumptions?

Also why on earth can’t I find them in the GRO?

Can anyone make any suggestions please?

Oxfordshire Completed Look Up Requests / 1861 Brackley/Finmere census help please.
« on: Saturday 18 November 06 09:48 GMT (UK)  »
I've been looking for the marriage of William Hitchcox, (Hitchcocks, Hitchcock.) To Patience Jane Baylis, about 1860 onward. Both were born in Finmere according to the 1881 census for Finmere.

I'm sure that Patience Jane's maiden name was Baylis, (Bayliss) because I have her daughter's birth certificate, where it states, name of mother Patience Jane Hitchcox formerly Bayliss.

After trawling through the marriage's on ancestry I drew a blank, but on free BMD I found, third quarter 1862 William Hitcox Brackley 3b 9. Though he appears to have married Patience Jane Davis.

Could someone kindly look up the 1861 census for Finmere to confirm whether Patience Jane was a Davis or a Baylis?

Many thank's, Baz.

Armed Forces / Soldiers service records.
« on: Tuesday 14 November 06 20:48 GMT (UK)  »
I was wondering could anyone tell me if it would be possible for me to obtain my Father's army service record?
I believe that he joined up sometime after WW1 and served in India with the Royal Artillery. He left the army in the early thirties but at the outset of WW2 was re-inlisted and served with the Expeditionary forces, after Dunkirk he returned to England where he remained in a training capacity.

Family History Beginners Board / When is a little information enough?
« on: Wednesday 08 November 06 20:29 GMT (UK)  »
I have been searching for a birth certificate for my gg Grandmother, the information that I am certain of is, her name, year of birth, marriage date and place, name of husband and his age and place of birth, name of father, cause and date of death. What I have yet to discover is her place of birth.

What makes the task even harder is that her maiden name was Smith. But using what I already knew I searched free BMD and finding a birth around the correct year, in a location near to where she was married I pined my hopes on it being the right person. Alas the fathers name didn't tally with the one I already knew to be correct.

Thinking laterally I thought it worth a try looking at free BMD in the county of her husbands birth. I found a birth that matched her name and year of birth but before sending off for a certificate I requested a look up for the 1851 census to see if the names of both child and father matched what I already knew to be correct. Again a negative result, but I was fortunate to be given a possible lead which led to an 1881 census return which matched my gg Grandmother exactly and actually gave Northampton as her county of birth.

Again I requested help through the county look up requests of this board. And was fortunate enough to receive a reply which gave an 1851 and a 1861 census return that in both instances tallied with a child of the correct age and fathers name to the one that I was searching for. Also the latter 1861 census gave a link to Buckingham which was the town in which my gg Grandmother was married and ultimately died.

So my question is this, given that I am looking for a person with a very common name i.e. Caroline Smith. Would you consider that by the sheer coincidence of the person that I have found being born in the correct year, her fathers’ name being the same, and a census return for 1861 when she was eleven years old that puts her family in the very place where my gg Grandmother was married seven years later. Would you consider it to be safe to regard the two Caroline Smiths to be one and the same person?

I look forward to your comments on how sure we should expect our information to be before we consider it to be correct.

Lincolnshire / help with Lincolnshire place names please.
« on: Monday 30 October 06 20:54 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help, I have a census account for 1851 in which it gives the place of birth of three members of one family naming locations in Lincolnshire.

The ends of the placenames are sadly missing, added to this the possibility that the enumerator may have mis-heard or mis-spelled the placenames. Leaving me with the task of trying to make an intelligent guess as to the locations.

Maybe someone with local knowledge could advise me please.

Market De? I think must be Market Deeping.

Hancas? I thought might be Horncastle.

Houlsbury. I believe may be Solsbury, but is there a place named Solsbury other than Solsbury hill. Which I believe is in Lincolnshire?

Thanks for any help, regards Baz.

Has anyone heard of this place? And if so where is Tankersley in Yorkshire?

I'm gratefull for any help you can give me on this one.

Thanks Baz.
