Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark / Charlotte CB Cave of St Saviour, Jersey
« on: Monday 21 September 09 02:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi!

I am researching the widow Charlotte CB Cave who at the time of the 1881 census was living with her sister and nephew at No. 2 Clifford Place, St. Saviour Parish, Jersey.

Charlotte's husband had been the Rev JCB Cave, 7th son of Thomas CB Cave of Cliff House, Warwickshire.  There is an outside possibility that he had been the Anglican minister in the parish...

Could some one tell me what that area would have been like in the 1880s? We know that the sisters had been living since the 1850s "with own means", but we are trying to determine exactly what type of life those means would have afforded.

Thank for your assistance!

Devon Completed Lookup Requests / Marriage look-up Newton Abbot
« on: Monday 21 September 09 02:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi!

Could someone do a marriage look-up for Edward Wright to Charlotte Dewdney in Newton Abbot in December 1862.

Unfortunately other than Wright's early death three years later in December 1865 in Penzance, Cornwall, I do not have any more information about him

On every census Charlotte was Church of England, and her second husband was an Anglican minister, so I am assuming (always dangerous) that the marriage took place in an Anglican Church.  She was born abt 1830 (although this date changes...) in Budleigh Salterton, Devon.

Any help at all would be really appreciated.
Thanks!

Cornwall / Edward WRIGHT of Penzance
« on: Monday 21 September 09 02:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am looking for information about an Edward Wright (d. Sept 1865 at Penzance).

He married Charlotte Dewdney (b. abt 1826 at Budleigh Salterton, Devon) at Newton Abbot, Devon in December 1862.  She was the sister of Edgar Dewdney, at that point future Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia (Canada).

I have not been able to find any information on him and would appreciate any assistance the Board can give me.

Many thanks,

Lili

Devon / Turners Ladied Boarding and Day School, Tiverton
« on: Tuesday 15 September 09 04:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

The Misses Turner were running a private girls school in Tiverton, as listed in an 1840 directory for Devon.  Eliza & Helna Turner, were the proprietors of a "Ladies boarding and day school" which was located in Bampton Street in Tiverton.  Their residence was on Peter Street.

Can anyone help with more information?  I am researching a family that is listed as boarding with them on the 1841 census.

Any assistance at all would be really appreciated.

Devon / DEWDNEY of East Budleigh
« on: Tuesday 15 September 09 04:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am researching the DEWDNEY family as they appear in the parish records for East Budleigh.

Children:  Jane Dewdney (b. abt 1826), Rose Dewdney (b. abt 1828), Charlotte Dewdney (b. abt 1830), Fanny Dewdney (b. abt 1832), Edgar Dewdney (bapt 18 Nov 1835) and Walter Dewdney (b. abt 1837).

Children all appear in the 1841 Census.  Jane, Rose, Charlotte, Fanny and Edgar appear as boarders at Misses Turner's School for Girls.  Walter is in East Budleigh living with the Palmers.  Parents are believed to be dead.

1851 Census - Edgar and Walter are boarding students at the Templton Mansion School in Exeter.

1858 - Rose dies. Edgar is in London. Walter joins 17th Lancers.

1859 - Edgar emigrates to British Columbia.

1861 - Jane, Charlotte and Fanny are living in St. Davids, Exeter, and are of "independent means"

Parents are believed to be John Dewdney & wife, Elizabeth - but should not be confused with the John Dewdney & Elizabeth Parsons who live in near by Littleham - they have children of a similar age but names and ages don't match.

Does anyone have access to the Parish Registers for East Budleigh who could confirm the parents and the baptism dates of the other children.  Any help at all would be appreciated.

Bedfordshire / Elizabeth Randolph EPPES of Bedford
« on: Saturday 15 August 09 03:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am trying to find the street address for Elizabeth Randolph Eppes, widow of William Isham Eppes.

Her burial record at Holy Trinity gives her address in Jan 1844 as Tavistock Street.  The Times death notice for 10 Jan 1844 notes that the house belonged to her son.

Her granddaughter, Frances Maria Sophia Eppes, was born there on 22 Apr 1844 and baptized at Holy Trinity in Jun 1844.

We believe that the house belonged to William Randolph Eppes, Assistant Deputy Commissary-general for Corfu.

Any assistance in identifying the actual address would be appreciated.

Best, Lili

Hi!

Hoping that someone might help me in locating Muirhead Cottage and Wheatlands Cottage in Denny.

William Adie Kennedy, a carter, was living there in October 1844 when he married Elizabeth Wilson who was living at Wheatlands Cottage.

Any information at all would be appreciated.

Stirlingshire / Daniel Bruce & Mary Ann Kennedy
« on: Sunday 03 August 08 18:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Looking for more information about:

Daniel Bruce, Sr.
b. abt 1825 in Denny, Stirlingshire, Scotland
s/o Margaret Kennedy
buried 09 May 1906 in the Presbyterian Section of the Williamstown Cemetery in Williamstown, Victoria, Australia – Plot: PRES C 17 003

Daniel appears in the 1841 Scottish Census for Denny, Stirlingshire, Scotland.  He is 15-yrs old and an apprentice blacksmith to Thomas Cleland in whose home he lived. At Wellstrand, in Denny.  The census also notes that Daniel was born in Denny.

He married on 4 Dec 1846 in Denny, Stirlingshire, Scotland:

Mary Ann Kennedy
b. 24 Aug 1826 in Denny, Stirlingshire, Scotland
d/o John Eddie Kennedy & Jean Burns
buried 28 Mar 1910 in the Presbyterian Section of the Williamstown Cemetery in Williamstown, Victoria, Australia – Plot: PRES C 17 003

In the 1851 Census, Daniel and Mary Ann live at 43 Castle Street in Galsgow.  He is working as a Blacksmith.  Daniel is 26 and Mary Ann is 22-yrs old.  They had two children – 3-yr old William (b. abt 1849) and 10 month old Jane (b. 1850).

On 3 Sept 1852, Daniel arrived in Geelong, Australia on board the Bourneup (Bourneuf).  He was 26-yrs old.   The Bourneup sailed from Liverpool.  It was a 1495 ton clipper under the hand of Master Robert Biddy.   It appears possible that Daniel was one of the thousands of miners who flooded the Ballarat gold fields.  Certainly as a blacksmith he would have found ample employment there…

I am hoping that someone might have come across Daniel in the course of their research into the Bruce family - we are trying to see if his mother Margaret Kennedy is related to his wife Mary Ann Kennedy.

My thanks for any help you can give.

Stirlingshire / Denny Cemetery
« on: Sunday 03 August 08 18:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

If I understood correctly, I believe that there is a transcription of the Denny Cemetery taking place.

I am researching the descendants of John Eddie Kennedy & Jean Burns of Falkirk & Denny who emigrated to Canada abt 1852/3 and settled in Egremont Twp, Grey Co., Ontario.  They had 12 children born in Scotland - and while most were born in Falkirk they seem to have been baptized at the Old Parish Church in Denny.

Four of their childen died young and I am wondering if three of them might have been buried in the Denny Cemetery.  They would be:

>  William Kennedy (b. 25 Apr 1831 / d. 1835)

>  Jean Kennedy (b. 10 Apr 1835 / d. Feb 1840)

>  Elizabeth Kennedy (b. 24 Oct 1838 / d. 1849)

Any help at all would be appreciated.

Many thanks,

Lili Kennedy
