Armed Forces / Help to identify and date uniform, please
« on: Thursday 07 September 23 22:09 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know what the uniform of the fellow on the left is, please?
It could be Australian, maybe WW2-ish?
Sorry, it's not a great photo, and I don't have access to the original, just this scanned image.
Thank you

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Translate death record from Belgium please
« on: Tuesday 22 September 20 22:14 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone

This death record contains the name Maria Louise Vyane who may be my 3x GGmother.

Is anyone able to translate this into English please?
I'm not sure how much of the original image I can post, I hope this section is ok. There is also an annotation on the side of this record that I'll post below.

Thanks you
Hilary

Kent / Obituary ~ 2015 Nicholas BLAKE in Kent
« on: Saturday 29 February 20 23:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there

Is it possible for someone to find an Obituary or Death notice or other information, relating to a recent death in Kent, England please? I understand that being so recent, sharing this information may not be allowed, please let me know if this is the case.

I recently found this record on the GRO death index and wonder if it's my cousin, who I've lost touch with.

Name: BLAKE, NICHOLAS  BRIAN  Birth Year: 1944  GRO Reference:  DOR  Q1/2015 in Kent  (564-1V)  Entry Number 511388786

I believe he was living in Margate, Kent when I last heard from him in 2010.

Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thank you
Hilary

Hello Everyone

I have a lady on the 1939 register living in St Pancras; May Ethel KENT b.12 May 1923. Her surname was later changed to FULLER, with the note: PER LON GAZ APA Date: 15/12/44. I had thought that this is in reference to a name change by deed poll which was announced in the London Gazette.

May had a long term relationship, children with and later married Henry James FULLER (I have their marriage cert from 1979). May used the Fuller surname from as early as 1944 for her rations ID, and later for a drivers license and passport.

I have searched the London Gazette online for an entry of change of name by Deed Poll, but can't locate it. I've used the website search engine with loads of different combinations of words with no helpful results. I also downloaded and scrolled through the 15 Dec 1944 issue page by page without success.

Does anyone know if I'm barking up the wrong tree here, please?
I thought that she would need proof that she had changed her surname legally, for the 1939 register correction, so if it's not The London Gazette, what could it be?

Thank you in advance, any advise much appreciated

London and Middlesex / Who was Caroline E Day really?
« on: Tuesday 10 December 19 02:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone

I'm not sure there is any way to find out, but if anyone can, it will be one of you.

My Great Granddad was Charles John Day born in 1886 Mile End Old Town, London. After about 1926 he left my GGma, and lived with another woman, until his accidental death in 1942.

I'm interested to know who the other woman was and if they had any children.

I'm pretty sure I have my great granddad on the 1939 register; Charles J Day (b.24 May 1886) living with his 'wife' Caroline E Day (b.02 Nov 1898) and 2 closed entries. Address: 22 Southborough Road, Hackney.

Legally Charles and Caroline could not marry, as he was still married to my GGma. So it made for an interesting family story when his 'wife' (who was not my GGma) turned up at the inquest for his death.

Is there any way to work out who Caroline was or if they had children? I'd love to know if I have any half cousins out there!

I have loads of info on both my GGdad and GGma, including birth, marriage and death certs, census records and military records from Ancestry.
It's this other woman who intrigues me!

Thanks for reading, I hope this all makes sense

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / What is in the second box please?
« on: Thursday 02 November 17 01:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

I wonder if anyone can work out what is written in the second box for this birth record (cropped from a certificate from the GRO). First is the date, then possibly a time (might be a twin?), and last the address.

I can see the top line says 'August 31st' but the rest of that box is a complete mystery. The writing in the other boxes is quite clear and easy to read in comparison.
If needed I can post the other half of the image.

Any suggestions gratefully accepted
regards
Hilary

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Transcription from French please?
« on: Tuesday 02 May 17 06:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone  ;D

Can anyone help me with this please?
I've been trying to transcribe and translate this baptism, I don't know any French so I'm completely relying on Google translate to help me. I have bits and pieces but much of it just eludes me, even though the writing is quite clear, the individual letters often aren't.
I've had a look at other pages and it seems that this is the only entry with this handwriting.
Date: 6 Jun 1742
Parents: Lazare and Elizabeth Desbois
Place: West Street Chapel, Soho (French Protestant), 1706-1743

Thank you
Hilary

Hello

I wonder if anyone can help me find the baptism for my 3x great Grandmother Caroline Shaylor?
My research indicates she was born in Hammersmith about 1814.

Caroline Shaylor married Edward Burt on 11 November 1833 at All Saints, Fulham. One of the witnesses on the day was Edward Shaylor but there is no indication weather he is her father, brother or perhaps an uncle.

On census returns Caroline usually states her birth place as Hammersmith, with her year of birth ranging between 1812 and 1817.
She died in 1885 as Caroline Burt at the age of 69 (born 1816) District: Lewisham and looks to have been buried on 29 August 1885 in Ladywell Cemetery (Lewisham), near to where her daughter was living at the time.

I have a lot of information regarding possible Shaylor family members, if her father was Edward Shaylor. Although there are what appear be  links, I have no definite proof of a connection.

Any ideas or help would be gratefully received.
Regards
Hilary
