Dear Rootschatters,
I first posted about William Holford in 2008. (Sorry if I should have continued on the same posting and I don't know how to link this message to the the old posting.  :(

William HOLFORD b 1790 married Ann FRYER nee PHILLPOT in 1828 in Portsea St Mary (Thank you littlenell you were superb in helping me out :)). At the time he was a widower and I've been trying to trace his birth and first marriage ever since.

I've finally found a William ALLFORD baptised 5/6/1790 in St Mary Southampton, the son of William ALLFORD and Anne Mathew (previosly GRANT nee REED) which I think is him. Now I'm trying to find his marriage to his first wife. Options so far are:
Elizabeth DEAN - marriage 18/8/1813 Alverstoke
Sarah COOK marriage 9/12/1820 Portsea St Mary
Martha REED marriage 27/10/1824 Portsea St Mary

Can anyone tell me whether Elizabeth, Sarah or Martha died before 1828?
Many thanks for your help and apologies for the length of the posting.

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Non Conformist Burial - Jane Washbourne
« on: Thursday 01 August 13 15:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters,
I'm looking for the burial of Jane Washbourne.
She died on 20 November 1882, aged 80, in Torquay, Devon. However, there is no trace of her burial in Torquay or in her birth place of Beer, Devon.  :'(
She was a widow when she died and her late husband was Nathaniel Washbourne who died in Norfolk Terrace, South Hamlet, Gloucester on 02/07/1861.
As I can't find her burial, where she should be, I am wondering if she was buried with her husband in Gloucestershire.
Can anyone help?
Thank you.

Occupation Interests / Completed:How do you trace a Nun?
« on: Thursday 17 January 13 14:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters,
Does anyone have any information about tracing a Nun? I have recently discovered that one of my partners family was a Nun. She was born in about 1848 (exact brith still to be found) in the Highgate, London area and I've tracked her on Census data until 1871 - she then "disapears". She definately became a nun as we have some photos of her. As we have photos, she coudn't, I think, be part of a closed order.
Were Nuns subject to the census?
Is there any way of finding out what her name became when she took holy orders?
Any thoughts or help would be gratefully received.

Dear all,
I'd be very grateful for your thoughts on the age of this photograph.
It is studio posed (I've also attached a scan of the reverse), card mounted, sepia, with square corners. It measures approx 6.5cm x 10cm (2.5" x 4").
I think it may have been taken in the 1820s or 1830s.

The people in the photo could be:
The adult on the right - Ann Holford, previously Philpott, nee Fryer 1794-1871 and three of her daughters, either:  Ann born 1817, Caroline b 1821, Elizabeth b 1822, Hannah b 1824, Eliza 1830, Amelia 1834, or Mary b 1836.

Any thoughts would be very welcome.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / COMPLETED: Zilpah Abrahams Mystery
« on: Tuesday 26 June 12 23:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,
This one is really confounding me :(!
Zilpah Abrahams is shown on the 1861 Census in Hornesy Middlesex (RG 9/792/144 p 38). She is the daughter of John and Emma (nee Aldridge) Abrahams who were married in 1853. This is the only trace of her - no birth, baptism, death or further census can I find!

According to the 1861 census she was born in Southgate, Middlesex and according to the transcription she was aged 3 and therefore born in about 1858. However, her entry is shown above that of her sister aged 6. The actual entry could read aged 13 and therefore born in about 1848, before her parents married and when her mother would have been about 17.

All the other children of John and Emma were born in Highgate and were baptised at St Michael's Church in Hornsey but nothing for this child.

I've tried everything to try and find her but with no success. Can anyone find her for me or offer any explanation?

Hi all,
I wonder if anyone can help me trace where Martha Abrahams is buried. It's a bit unusual in that she died in Islington, London, on 13 December 1920, aged 75. Her will, however, requests that she "be buried at Swansea, South Wales near my old home where my people are buried". She asked that her brother Thomas Ayres be responsible for the provision of the grave and burial. He was living at Orchard Street Swansea at the time and Orchard Street is where Martha spent her early years. Her parents were James and Rebecca Ayres.
I have asked for a search of the municipal graves, from the Council, and am waiting for a reply. I suspect, however, that she may be buried in a churchyard.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

World War Two / Queens Own Royal West Kent 132 Brigade
« on: Wednesday 20 June 12 11:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,
Am in the processes of cataloguing my fathers photographs and have posted the attached - Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, 132 Brigade. It was taken in about 1941, as my father (far right, standing in the first row) has sergeant's stripes which he received in March of 1941. From what I can tell from his records he would still have been in the UK at the time the photo was taken, before embarking to the Mediterranean in May 1941.
I've posted the photo in case it helps Rootschaters with identification of uniforms etc or to see if they can spot their relatives.
I'd be delighted to add names to the photo if anyone recognises their relatives and lets me know.
Regards,
Nika

England / COMPLETED: Dr Who's Mum - Lucy Hartnell
« on: Sunday 25 March 12 14:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
A bit of help required please. I'm trying to find the birth of Lucy (possibly Lucy Ann) Hartnell. (She was the mother of Williamn Henry Hartnell - the first Dr Who). She was the daughter of Jane and James Hartnell and would have been born about 1890 in Devon, possibly Clayhidon(she was about 17 when her son was born). Her son was born in St Pancras in 1908.

Try as I might, I can't find her either her birth or find her on any census data. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance for your time and help.

Nika
PS: I've posted this on the "general" board rather than post it on the Devon and London boards.
