New Zealand Completed Requests / World War 1 records
« on: Friday 14 August 09 08:06 BST (UK)  »
At Christmas last year I bought my grandfather's WW1 war records.

Just wanted to let everyone know that today I looked him up on the Archway site again, and his war records were right there in PDF on the internet for FREE!!

Just one mouse click had the whole lot in front of me AND it was way more than what I was sent in the post.

I couldn't believe it   ;D

Needed to tell everyone. Looks like there are only a few but maybe over time more will be added.

If this is already general knowledge then oops.. I havent been doing any research for ages  >:(  too busy.

Cork / place name query 'Barroch' and occupation query
« on: Wednesday 19 November 08 22:38 GMT (UK)  »

I found a piece of paper tucked into my grandmother's photo album which says that my 2x gr grand John Thomas Steel was born 24 June 1843 at Barrock, County Cork.

No place exists that I can find.  I have a webpage for this family

I did a google search and think it 'may' be Blackrock.. they sound similar in my accent (New Zealand)  If anyone lives in Ireland maybe you might be able to think of a place that may have the name Barroch.

J. T. Steel's father is listed a pensioner on his marriage certificate (he married in England 1868) and as a soldier on his death certificate, just of interest: what kind of duties would a soldier have had in the early to mid 1800's.  And did soldiers receive a pension when they retired?

sorry for the soldiers questions, they seem silly but I have often wondered

thank You

New Zealand Completed Requests / Tucker family complete
« on: Friday 24 October 08 23:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone.  I have just gone back to my first family of Tucker's in New Zealand. This is the family tree I started off with 4 years ago and which got me hooked  :)

The first family has been very hard to research. Having a website up I have been lucky enough to hear from a descendant of one of the children, and have been able to fill in a gap there but I have decided its time to bite the bullet and order a death printout that might be a possiblity

the family page is here
my direct ancestor is the 3rd son Edward, who married Emma

One of three people in tree I have no information on is William Henry on the above page.

some wonderful person had researched a different Tucker family and published all Tucker BDM's online, along with folio numbers .. this is her death page  I am going to order William Henry's death from 1880.. its the only one there except one in 1919 which I know for a fact isn't mine.  Only she doesnt have the folio number listed with him. Is someone able to look it up please?

Two other brothers: John and George are also mysteries.  In John's case its weather or not he had children and when he really married his wife Christina.

In George's case I dont know if the certificate I ordered is the correct one! Its too expensive to order all George Tucker death printouts, so I'm leaving him out for now.

Any help appreciated

New Zealand Completed Requests / tips to finding missing passenger list
« on: Tuesday 21 October 08 06:33 BST (UK)  »
I have one family in my tree.. well two actually that I dont have passenger lists for

One is the family of my gr grandmother Gretta Jack.. her parents plus two young children,  arrived in NZ in 1876 or 1877.

I presume the reason no passenger list is online is because  for most of that time period there are no Hawkes Bay Herald papers on the paperspast site.

The other ship is for another gr grandmother. I do know the name of the ship this time:  Portland..  and it arrived in 1880. I have found shipping news at paperspast to confirm its arrival  but no passenger list so I can verify that they were on board.

This family was the Baker's

These were the last ships that my direct ancestors arrived in and yet have been the most difficult to find.. is there a way to find out, other than paperspast?

thank you

« on: Friday 17 October 08 22:49 BST (UK)  »
morning everyone  :)

I am taking a look at my husband's family tree and have found a couple of marriages which have the grooms names as initials

1) Edith Eleanor Whitton who married J. Avery.. probably later than 1890
2) Phyllis Avery married F. Carter.. probably later than 1920

Still have a lot to go but can't find any others like this

Thank you  :)
