World War One / Thomas Fisher buried Portsmouth cemetary help please
« on: Friday 23 February 07 10:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, its me again - I thought I'd make this a new thread because I need to rule out this Thomas fisher that I found on the cwgc website:
Name: FISHER
Initials: T
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Worcestershire Regiment
Unit Text: 1st Garrison Bn.
Secondary Regiment: Labour Corps
Secondary Unit Text: transf. to (282061) 629th Home Service Employment Coy. Date of Death: 02/08/1918
Service No: 28817
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: 1st Central. 22. 46.
Cemetery: PORTSMOUTH (EASTNEY OR HIGHLAND ROAD) CEMETERY

Now, I'm excited about this one on a few points; Thomas had a brother Herbert who also served with the Worcestershire Reg and he died in Gallipoli, because I wanted his records too I contacted the Worc reg and they gave me a copy of the Worc. Reg soldiers who died in the Great War records and this Thomas Fisher is NOT listed in their records, even thought he served with their Reg - Why? Could it be because he was transferred to Home Service? Could this be the reason why my Thomas is not on his local war memorial?

Please could some very kind person reading this post have a check on any references they have for this Thomas and see if we can find his home town? He was born in Burnley but live in Barrow in Furness and was married to Lucy. Thomas serverd with the Cheshire Reg and was a sargeant until 1909. In 1914 Thomas would have been 40.

I have a feeling about this one!
Thank you,
Kathryn

Armed Forces / Please help - cannot find gg grandads death!
« on: Wednesday 21 February 07 21:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I'm at a brick wall and it is driving me mad, if anyone can help me out here I would really really appreciate it.  My GG grandad Thomas William Fisher b1874 was a sargeant in the Cheshire Reg in 1907 (it says so on his marriage cert).

In 1909 Thomas is a shipyard worker in Barrow in Furness according to my G grangmothers birth cert (this is definately correct, Thomas must have demobbed from the army sometime beween 1907 - 1909).

The problem I have is that my G grandmother always told us that Thomas died in ww1 and she never knew him really.  I've searched rolls of honour, Barrow war memorial, the medals index and the gro registers and cannot find a suitable entry for his death! If he was 'missing in action' would there be a 'missing in action' list?

I have wrote to the Cheshire Reg to see if they have anything in their archives, but this might not help with his ww1 history as he may have joined up in 1914 with the reserves to a different regiment.

If Thomas died from his injuries after the war, abroad or in England, who would register his death? I've searched the gro army indexes abroad but to no avail.I would hate to think he languished in some nursing home as many others did, forgotten about.  His wife married again in 1922 and is a widow on her second marriage cert so this is a possible option, he could have died as a result of his injuries after the war ended.

The brick wall is all that more important to me because we are visiting the war cemetaries around the Somme and Ypres this summer and if we could at least know where he went missing we could lay some kind of rememberance for him.  His brother Herbert was killed at Gallipoli and we have all his details, I really want to do the same for Thomas.

Please, if anyone can help or advise I would be so grateful.
Kathryn

World War One / WW1 MIA help
« on: Saturday 16 September 06 17:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I posted a question on here a long time ago about my gg grandfather so my apologies if this seems familiar :). In 1907 my gg grandfather Thomas William FISHER married my gg grandmother Lucy Barnes in Chester. His occupation on the marriage certificate says Sergeant- The Cheshire Regiment. In 1907 they had my g grandmother, and on her birth certificate Thomas is now working and living at Barrow in Furness (employed at the Shipyard).

So we know he was out of service shortly after 1907, but he must have signed up for WW1 because my g nanna has told me how he died during the war, his body (sadly like too many others) never recovered. His wife remarried in 1922, and is listed as a widower on her 2nd marriage cert.

I've searched the Barrow war memorial and Thomas is not on there (his brother Herbert is - he died at Gallipoli with the Worc reg). I've searched the CWGC and there are four pages of Thomas Fisher's - how do I know which is mine? I've already purchased a few but I'm not sure they are mine (Thomas would have been between 34 and 38y in the duration of the war). I've searched the medal indexes and again there are to many to narrow down. Please would sks help me with this?

I don't think Thomas went back in the Cheshires for WW1 - he could have joned up with his local reg (The Kings Own) or been attached to somewhere else. He may even have died as a result of his injuries post war which would explain why he's not on the local war memorial (if this is the case then I think its appalling that these men arent named also >:()

So I've decided to apply to the Cheshire reg for a search (£10) which may give me his service number, is it worth paying someone to check the records at Kew also? I know 60% were los in a fire so its a long shot, but I really want to do this mans memory justice and find out what happened to him, please couls sks help or advise me?

Thank you :)

Armed Forces / Grandad in Burma?
« on: Thursday 14 September 06 12:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi, my grandfather served as a gunner in the Royal Artillery from 1931 until 1945. We got his service records last year which show he served in India from 1932 - 1938 then in the war he served at Gibralter at first, then went on the defensively equipped merchant ships, with mention of stationing at Narvik.

The thing is, we finally got his was medals last week and were (pleasantly) surprised to receive the Burma star and the Pacific clasp as well as the other medals. But theres no mention of this in his service records, nor did he tell the family when he was around (he emigrated to NZ in the 1960s). Does anyone know what I can do to find out where he was in Burma, Its hard becuse he was a gunner he got attached to different regiments and units in the war, and the service records are a bit sketchy on dates and units.

Any help or advice is always appreciated, Thank you.
