Armed Forces / Crimean War Medal - George Brooks of the 56th Foot Regiment or Brigade
« on: Wednesday 10 April 13 08:59 BST (UK)  »
Seeking Crimean War information on Corporal George Brooks - born 5 September, 1834 at Hownslow, Middlesex. he was baptised on 28 September, 1834 at All Saints, Isleworth, Middlesex. George's parents were Andrew Brooks of the Metropolitan Police, V Division at Wandsworth. Andrew was a Labourer at Isleworth in 1839 but by 1841 he went to Thames Ditton, Surrey and probably enlisted in the Police Force about then - he died of ill health on 1848. George's mother was Susan/Susannah Haylock of Suffolk and she died in 1846. In 1851 George Brooks was living with his uncle Thomas Haylock at Hanworth. I think that George Brooks had enlisted in the 56th Foot and was in Crimea by 1854 when he was verging on the age of 20. This regiment later became the (West) Essex Regiment. There is a coloured image of George in 1855 in his 56th Foot uniform (likely a composite). He was a 'Pompadour' and wore the Kilmarnock hat which was for day to day training and off duty purposes.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Uniform of c1861 to 1867
« on: Monday 27 February 12 02:15 GMT (UK)  »
I have this image on the Surrey site but it needs to be in this category now that I have further information -
I'm trying to identify the man in the cap and wearing the diagonal sash - he a likely a "Brooks" from Isleworth, Middlesex The family was also from Surrey.
I'm told that the uniform is probably not British which I had thought was most likely
I'm told that the photograph has been re-touched using water colour paint which was not an uncommon practice.
Other useful advice is that it is an early carte-de-viste photograph c1861 to 1867.
Also that the cap is of French kepi style and could be of the American Civil War period 1861 to 1865; and that the sash may indicate that he was a Sergeant or even an Officer.
Identification of this unusual uniform would be great

Ayrshire / Gabriel Douglas of Muirkirk
« on: Thursday 11 August 11 05:14 BST (UK)  »
Gabriel Douglas 1822 Muirkirk- Watchman and Goldman - married (1) Agnes Hogg in 1845 at Glasgow, (2) Mary Ann Ryan in 1881 at Gore Street, Fitzroy and (3) Isabella Nicol Stalley at Trinity Church, Port Melbourne in 1887.
Puzzle - Isabella had been married to a Stalley (perhaps Henry Francis Stalley) and was a Widow. It is stated  that her father was 'Martin Mawson? from Newport, Victoria' - however her parents are described as John Thomson 'Master Mariner' and Margaret Nicol. Isabella had two children by the name of Stalley (Stally) in 1887.
Any clues please?
