Technical Help / Images not copied over from old to new laptop on PAF
« on: Sunday 05 February 17 18:22 GMT (UK)  »
I have recently bought a new laptop and asked my computer techies to copy the PAF, version 5 family history from the old to the new machine. All appeared to be well until I found that "multimedia" , ie photos , had not been copied although the titles of the images were there. My previous laptop ran Windows 7 and the new one Windows 10. Would that be part of the problem ?
Is there any way to restore the images without the labour of doing it all by hand  ?

I shall need a new project for the Spring  !

The Common Room / " Occupier dead " on 1901 census return
« on: Friday 02 September 16 18:41 BST (UK)  »
While browsing the censuses for people in an old album of post cards , I came across the entry
" occupier dead ". I've never seen this before and wonder how it came about and how the enumerator gained this information. Has anyone come across it ?
I'm not sure if I'm allowed to give the reference but can provide it in a personal message if anyone is interested.

I have posted about my gt gt grandfather Henry  (James) HEATH before but now am confused as to his origins and parentage. He was born in 1833 and according to both the 1871 and 1861 censuses, was born in BROMLEY Kent. His marriage certificate shows  his father to have been James Heath. The only Henry Heaths born around 1833 in Kent do not have a father called James.  To add to the confusion, , Henry was baptised in  St Paul's Shadwell London on 7 Jul 1833, although apparently born in Bromley, Kent , and the register shows his dob as 28 May 1833.
My Henry married Sarah Burrows in 1852.
Can any sleuth find my Henry please?

thanks for any help or suggestions.

The Common Room / Delayed marriage after Banns called
« on: Wednesday 03 December 14 17:57 GMT (UK)  »
My 3x gt grandparents were married on 15 November 1832 at St Paul's ,Shadwell, London but the Banns had  been read in March 1832 at St Dunstan's , Stepney, where both parties were resident.
Was a delay of this length permitted or normal then ? I had understood marriage normally had to take place within 3 months of the Banns.

The Common Room / Did she die intestate??
« on: Tuesday 22 July 14 14:05 BST (UK)  »
While checking the Probate records, I found that for an individual I am interested in , Probate was granted in 1916,  to "Henry Strutt, Accountant General, Inland Revenue". Would this imply that there was no will?

I have been looking for "Mrs H Clark" who lived in Drake Road Westcliff on Sea . Essex in 1911.
The search is made difficult since on Ancestry, when looking via the Enumeration Districts. there is no option for "Southend" or "Westcliff" although every other town/village in Essex is listed!
A call to the Ancestry help line proved fruitless, although it was suggested I put the town into the "Keyword" option........no success.
I'd be glad of any help...maybe a rival FH site has the missing areas? :)
Thank you

The Common Room / A long delay between death and letters of administration
« on: Tuesday 26 November 13 14:00 GMT (UK)  »
One of my wife's gt gt grandmothers, Mary Bower nee Ball of Langton Matravers, Dorset, died in 1842. To my surprise, Letters of Administration were only granted in 1867 to her husband. Is a delay of 25 years exceptional and does anyone have an explanation as to why there might have been
such a delay? The Estate was not large, being assessed at "under £50".

Technical Help / Backed up FH and now can't view the master copy.
« on: Sunday 24 March 13 18:15 GMT (UK)  »
I use PAF for 2 separate trees. A couple of days ago I backed up both trees to a memory stick together with the set-up file.
I can view one tree and also edit it in  the copy but the other tree on the memory stick is "read only" and more troublesome is that the master copy from which I made that back up has vanished. I have searched all the files and folders and can find no trace of it. So much for making back ups! If there is a solution to this or anyone can give me any suggestions as to what has happened I'll be most grateful.
Fortunately, the tree that has "disappeared" is not very large so if the worst happens I can just set it up again.........but I'm concerned that if I back up to a memory stick again this may recur.
Thanks for help or ideas

Wales / Margaret HALL daughter of Rees DAVIES....bastardy bond?
« on: Sunday 03 February 13 18:54 GMT (UK)  »
I have previously posted an enquiry about my gt grandmother, Margaret NUNN, nee HALL and hope there may be new subscribers who can help me decide where (and when) she was born. The named witnesses are not relevant as far as I can judge. James was a driver in the Royal Artillery and at the RA Barracks in Brecon. James' age is 22 and a bachelor while Margaret is a spinster with her age given as 20. I am inclined to believe she was  younger than that however as when she died in 1889 in Hertfordshire she was aged 32 giving a year of birth circa 1857.
Her father's name is given as "Rees Davies" , a labourer, deceased. If this implies she was born out of wedlock, would there be any Bastardy Bonds in Wales at that time?
Seeking her place of birth in the 1881 census does not help as she is listed as "wife of soldier" and born in London , James' place of birth also being incorrect; they were obviously billeted in a house in Aldershot and the householder clearly guessed a lot of the details of their children as well.
A needle in a haystack?? I'd be very pleased if anyone can help me find it !
