London and Middlesex / Thomas John Volan
« on: Tuesday 24 January 23 15:52 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find more about Thomas John Volan who married Ellen Bridgman in 1875 at Pancras, he and Ellen are shown on the 1881 census at St. Pancras Thomas gives his birthplace as Leeds are their ages are shown as 37/34
In 1891 Thomas is again stating his birthplace was Leeds, but their ages are now shown as 58/42
I  can't find Thomas anywhere before his marriage, nor can I find him after the 1891 census.
Ellen died in 1909
I think it likely Thomas's surname had different spellings i e There are two Thomas Fallon's born at Leeds in 1844, mothers maiden names shown as Glinn and O'Brien, but I can't see marriages
I suppose it's possible the family came to England from Ireland due to the potato famine
I haven't as yet sent for the marriage certificate which hopefully would show Thomas's fathers Christian name, is there anywhere online I can get that information from.
Any advise/ ideas would be most welcome

Staffordshire / Harriet Kemp
« on: Monday 26 December 22 15:22 GMT (UK)  »
George Barlow married Harriet Kemp on 7th June 1829 at Hanley, Stoke on Trent.

From the 1851 census Harriet gives her birthplace as Fenton, and her year of birth c1808

Harriet died in 1857 aged 49 at Burslem which fits in with birth year being 1808.

I can't find a marriage record that shows her father's name nor can I find a relevant birth/baptism.

Is there any way I can find out who her parents were?

Staffordshire / THOMAS RIGBY from Shelton
« on: Saturday 22 October 22 15:13 BST (UK)  »
I can find the marriage record for Thomas Rigby on 11th Nov 1837 at St. John's Hanley, to Elizabeth Fox.
Thomas is shown as full age, his residence place Lichfield St, Shelton and his father as John Rigby.

I can't find Thomas and Elizabeth in the 1841 census nor can I find a record of baptism of Thomas

From the 1851 and 1861 census Thomas states his birthplace as Newcastle under Lyme, and from his age he was born c1817.

The only baptism in time scale and region is on 1st Jan 1817 at St. Giles Newcastle u Lyme but that is to William Rigby not John

Thomas died aged 52 in 1868 N u L

I have an Ancestry subscription and  I have looked on Freereg and Family search without success, are there any other sites where I might find his birth/baptism record?
How can I find them in 1841 ?

Thank you

Leicestershire / Pickerings from Shackerstone
« on: Sunday 25 September 22 14:33 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find the parents of Mary A Pickering who married Robert Arnold at Market Bosworth in 1853, from subsequent census's Mary gives her birthplace as Shackerstone born c1832.

I can see from 1841 census a Mary Pickering aged 8 with parents William and Anna at Shackerstone,
but the parents ages don't seen compatible with ages of children.

William Pickering 30
Anna Pickering    25
Hannah   "          11
William               10
Mary                    8

There are a couple of family trees on Ancestry which have William Pickering marrying Ann Peck
at Kirby Malloryin 1824, which would make them mere children when they married.

1851 census shows William as 42 and Ann as 53
1861    "          "          "         54   "      "    "  65

So do I assume that the ages of William and Ann on the 1841 census are incorrect?
How do you think I can progress ?

Thank you in advance

Staffordshire / Mary Ellen Bennett
« on: Monday 19 September 22 15:15 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out the family of Mary Ellen Bennett who married James Barlow at Cobridge in 1867 when she was 19, her father's name is given as John Bennett.
Mary Ellen Bennett's birth was registered at Stoke on Trent in 1848 and her mother's maiden name was shown as Jackson.

There is an 1851 census entry in Hartshill (where Mary Ellen was born) that shows John Bennett was 28, Eliza 30 and Mary 11 plus Herbert 2 (he died in 1852) I looked to find Herbert's birth to check his m.m.n was Jackson but cannot find, Mary would actually be 13 so perhaps this isn't the right family, also she seemed to always be called Mary Ellen rather than just Mary.

Eliza Bennett married Charles Smith in 1854 Wolstanton, so presumably John Bennett died between Mary Ellen's conception c 1847 and 1854, but I can't find a death that matches his age.
The 1861 census shows Charles Smith 26 married to Eliza 40 and stepdaughter Mary Ellen Bennett aged 13 at Etruria.
Any views would be most welcome

The only marriage I can find between a John Bennett and Eliza Jackson was at Nottingham in the Dec qtr of 1848, which seems unlikely

Staffordshire / Merricks from Dudley
« on: Saturday 03 September 22 17:03 BST (UK)  »
Peter Merrick was born 1854 at Dudley
In 1876 he married Caroline Hall at Dudley
In 1881 the census shows a daughter Sarah aged 3 and a son William 1 but wife's name is shown as Catherine not Caroline
The GRO  shows a Sarah Merrick of born 1st q 1879 but mothers maiden name is LEECH
William is shown born 4th q 1879 mothers maiden name HALL

I cannot find the family anywhere in the 1891 census

On the 1901 census Peter and Catherine are shown with 8 children, 7 of them are on the GRO with mothers maiden name of HALL, but with them now is Sarah, not 23 as would be expected (from the 1881 census) but aged 14, I can't find her birth on the GRO
In 1911 Caroline is the name given (as it is too in 1921) and the mysterious Sarah is shown as 24

I seem to be dizzy with confusion, has anyone any solution please

Gloucestershire / Emily Moss fro Cold Ashton
« on: Saturday 06 March 21 17:31 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find the parents of Emily Moss, this is what I know :-

12th March 1884 Emily married Frederick Milsom at Bitton, Gloucs. she gives her age as 19 and her father's names as John Moss, so born c 1865
The couple then move to Derbyshire
1891 census -Emily is shown as 26 and place of birth as Aston, Wiltshire
1901     "           "           "         35         "           "         Cold Ashton, Gloucs
1911      "           "                    45          "           "            "       "          "
1917 Emily died aged 51
so her date of birth is fairly consistent with 1865/66

The 1881 census shows Emily Moss aged 14 at Pucklechurch which is where Cold Ashton is, she is a servant
I can't find anything for 1871
Cold Ashton is in the Chipping Sodbury registration district and the only birth I can see is of Emily Jane Moss 1865, but her parents are Edward Moss and Jane Rawlings.
Emily didn't have  a second name on her marriage, census or death record.
There is an Emily Moss (no mothers maiden name shown on GRO so presumably out of wedlock)
but that is at Chipping Norton which is more than 30 miles from Chipping Sodbury.
There is a birth of Emily Moss registered in 1866 in Cirencester Wiltshire (following the 1891 census mention of Wiltshire) with a mothers maiden name of HEMS, however I can't find a marriage record anywhere between MOSS and HEMS, so don't know if this was John Moss.

Would appreciate any help or suggestions please

Warwickshire / Informant on birth certificate
« on: Monday 08 February 21 17:07 GMT (UK)  »
My grandmother gave birth out of  wedlock to a boy in 1905, her occupation is Barmaid and address is shown as  28, Gladstone Road Bordesley, but the birth is listed as 1, Union Road,
Erdington, the informant is a Geoff Lloyd also of 1 Union Road Erdington, so I am wondering whether he was  the father /and why she gave birth there, I can't find any trace of a Geoffrey Lloyd in 1901 or 1911.
She did keep her son and went on to marry in 1909,so who is Geoff Lloyd ?

Warwickshire / St. Mary's College. New Oscott, Sutton Coldfield
« on: Wednesday 27 January 21 15:55 GMT (UK)  »
Family memories state that my grandfather Samuel James Rabone born 1879 BHam may have initially gone into the priesthood, and St Mary's College has been mentioned. Also mentioned is that one or more of his sisters went into the convent and my cousin remembers visiting there probably c 1950 when she was a small child.
I cannot find Samuel on the 1901 census, would residents of St. Mary's have been listed
 if he was there,
he apparently left because he needed to bring money in when his father (who died in 1906) became ill, I have searched in 1901 f0r many years for him without success, he married in 1902 however.
Were nuns names altered to a given name or owuld their deaths have been registered the same as birth names?
Thank you in anticipation
