Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Comparison of Signatures
« on: Tuesday 30 November 21 17:50 GMT (UK)  »
I don’t know whether anyone can help with this.

I’m trying to find out whether a man called Alfred Pope, who was married to a Martha Good in 1863, was same man who married my great aunt, Kate Dunstan, in 1877.  I have copies of the parish records for both marriages and, although the signatures aren’t the same, there are similarities.

I’ve attached a copy showing both and I’d be grateful for opinions as to the likelihood of this being the same person.  I can provide a link to the two documents if that helps.

Many thanks

Malcolm

Galway / Galway Town Rugby Football Club c1900?

I don't know whether anyone can help with this. It's a poor-quality scan of a photo given to me by a cousin and we don't know who has the original. My grandfather is on the far right of the middle row and, given his age (he was born in 1877), must have been taken in the 1890s or around 1900. My grandfather was in the Galway Town Rugby Football Club.

I'd be very grateful for any information that would help date it and it's possible there's a better quality photo somewhere, but I know the chances are small!

Galway / Joseph Semple, John Semple and Jane Semple
« on: Saturday 05 June 10 14:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi

My great grandmother was Jane Semple, born about 1853 in the Galway area (recorded as Connemara in the 1901 census but just Galway in the 1911 one).  Her father was John Semple, a builder who was based in Dominic Street, Galway until his death at around 1880.

Jane Semple married my great grandfather, Edward Patrick Staunton, on 6 June 1876.  They were married at Nile Lodge, Galway, which was the home of Joseph Semple.  Joseph Semple (abt 1816-1905) was a JP and merchant.

The Galway Family History Society has been extremely helpful with information about my family but can find no record of John Semple’s marriage or death (although there is a possibly relevant baptism record in 1807) and can find no records which could tell me the relationship between Jane Semple or her father and Joseph Semple.

I would be grateful for any information that would help.

Many thanks

Galway / Edward Staunton: COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 10 December 08 21:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

My great grandfather was Edward Patrick Staunton, born about 1847.  I would be grateful for help in finding out when he died.

His marriage certificate gives his occupation as an apothecary living in Dominick Street, Galway.  He married Jane Semple on 6 June 1876.  My grandfather, Edward Bertram Staunton, was born the following year and his sister Mary about 1881.  There may have been other children but I don’t have any information about them.  By the 1901 census Jane had re-married (new husband a Dr Parker), so Edward could have died at any time sometime between 1881 and 1901.

I would appreciate any information which would help with the date of my great grandfather’s death or any that would narrow it down (e.g. the date Jane Staunton married Dr Parker).

Many thanks if you can help

Derry (Londonderry) / Quigley family
« on: Wednesday 03 December 08 21:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

My great grandmother was Rose Anne Quigley, born about 1852 (place unknown).  I’ve just received her marriage certificate which shows that her father was a John Quigley whose occupation was a brewer and whose address was William Street, Londonderry.  Rose married Michael John O’Loughlin (an excise officer) in the chapel of St Columb in Londonderry on 9 April 1872.

I would be grateful for any information about Rose, her father or other members of her family before she married.

Many thanks if you can help.

Monmouthshire / Alfred Pope

Hi

I’m trying to find more information about an Alfred Pope who married Kate Dunstan (my mother’s great aunt) in Pillgwenlly on 18 July 1877.  The marriage certificate gives his age as 30 (so birth year around 1847) and his occupation was a clerk.  It states that he was a widower.  His father’s name was John, who was a clerk in the civil service.

The only other records I have are the censuses for 1881 and 1901, which give Alfred’s birth place as Bermuda.  In 1881 Alfred was living with Kate and their two children, Leonora and Alfred, in Cardiff.  His occupation was shipbroker.  In 1901 (can’t find them in 1891) the family were still in Cardiff (now with a third child, Caroline) and Alfred’s occupation was Foreign Traveller, Coals.

I would be grateful for any more information about Alfred, including his previous marriage and his parents.

Many thanks if you can help

Malcolm
