Canada / Original images of 1911 census?
« on: Friday 10 October 08 22:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to track down a g.g.uncle, and someone found a possible match for him in the 1911 Canadian census.  Can someone tell me if it's possible to see the original images from this census anywhere online, and what if any extra information they might contain?

The chap I'm looking for is Maurice Sutton, and the reference is 1911 / Ontario / Toronto East / 32 Toronto / page 7, I've seen the info on automatedimages so far.

Also, I believe he would have emigrated in or around 1896 (his mother reported his disappearance to the local police), but how can I go about finding out whether this is the case?  Ship's passenger lists?  He was in the workhouse in 1891 aged 7, so I don't know how likely it was that he'd have been able to pay his fare to emigrate.

Finally, is it possible to find out more about Robert Sutton, the 1911 Maurice's son?  EG would his birth cert (assuming it's Canadian) give father's birthplace/nationality etc?

Any help gratefully received!

Cate.

Family History Beginners Board / Did Mary Ann Sutton marry Thomas Harrison? (take 2)
« on: Thursday 02 October 08 12:14 BST (UK)  »
This is my second attempt to sort this out, I mucked up the details in my first post and got confused with another bit of the family, d'oh!  Anyway, here goes for take two (with better proof reading this time!):

I've possibly located Mary Ann Sutton (nee Smith) on the 1901 census, but she's Mary Ann Harrison, wife of Thomas Harrison and appears to have reduced her age by 6 or 7 years.  And I can't find a Harrison/Sutton or Harrison/Smith wedding - which would appear to take place between 1891 and 1901 due to census records.

Has anyone got a fresh pair of eyes and can take a look for them for me?  And am I barking up the wrong tree completely with thinking that my Mary Ann Sutton is Mary Ann Harrison?

In 1891 Thomas appears to be married to an Elizabeth - ref RG12/3013 page 29 folio 49 possibly?  Mary Ann is a domestic servant, widow, in North Meols/Ormskirk - ref for her is RG12/3039 page 1 don't know the folio # - 25 possibly?

The 1901 ref for both of them is RG13/3514/70/30.

Hope that all makes sense!  In case it helps, Thomas Harrison was b. Worcestershire I think Doddenhall or Doddenhill, and Mary Ann was b Worcestershire Droitwich.

Mary Ann was b. c. 1852, her father was Samuel Smith.  She had two children: Mabel Sutton b 1881 (my g.grandmother) who in 1901 was living with her aunt and uncle in the potteries, and Maurice Sutton b 1883 who is the Big Mystery   - no trace of him in 1901, only just found him in the Tewkesbury workhouse in 1891, and I have copies of letters written to the police by his mother Mary Ann relating to what appears to be his disappearance  :o

Any help VERY gratefully received with this bunch!

Cheers,

Cate.

PS If anyone can tell me where to find the folio numbers on census returns, that'd be really helpful!  ;D

Hi,

I've possibly located Mary Ann Sutton (nee Smith) on the 1901 census, but she's Mary Ann Freeman, wife of Thomas Freeman and appears to have reduced her age by 6 or 7 years.  And I can't find a Freeman/Sutton or Freeman/Smith wedding - which would take place between 1891 and 1901 due to census records.

Has anyone got a fresh pair of eyes and can take a look for them for me?  And am I barking up the wrong tree completely with thinking that my Mary Ann Sutton is Mary Ann Freeman?

Thanks!

Family History Beginners Board / Why can't I find him?
« on: Thursday 25 September 08 20:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm looking for my g.g.uncle Maurice SUTTON in the 1891 census.  Maurice was b 1883 to Thomas Sutton and Mary Ann Sutton nee Smith.

I have a printout from the 1891 census that shows Maurice as an inmate in (I assume) a workhouse, in Tewkesbury.  I'm trying to find the online record of it via Ancestry so that I can save it on my computer (and use it in Family Historian as a record & source).  But every time I try searching, I'm drawing a blank.

Can anyone help?

TIA,

Cate.

Edited to add: on the printout, the only reference I can find is: RG12/2050 and at the top it says page 2.

Shropshire / Joseph Cooke's will (1875)
« on: Monday 22 September 08 21:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Can anyone help?  I want to get a copy of a will made in 1871 by my ancestor Joseph Cooke (b Ellesmere).  Probate was granted in 1875, and apparently there is a registered copy of the will held at Shropshire Archives (on p333 in Shrewsbury, so I'm told).

TIA!

World War Two / Siege of Malta?
« on: Friday 19 September 08 23:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I know my grandad Geoffrey Walker Godfrey served in WW2 and was stationed on Malta for some time - he was definitely there in late 1941 and summer 1942.  He was there during a siege, where I'm told they ate cats and dogs as there was no food (no idea how true that is?).

I don't know what force/regiment he was with, how would I go about finding out?  Can't ask family.  Also, my grandma told me that he refused promotion to the first rank of officer a few times because he said he wanted to survive the war, and officers got put on the front line more often - would I be able to find out if that's true?  Finally, he was apparently the only survivor of an attack on his room on Malta where the 5 other people he shared with were all killed.  Again, is there any way of narrowing this down and discovering the truth?

Also, I have pictures that he took while on Malta that were well labelled, including of things like the bombing of the Invincible, the Opera House on Malta before the blitz, plus a fair few others - I've hopefully attached a couple if I've managed to do it right!  Are these of any particular interest?  I really don't yet know anything about what my grandad did.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give!

Buckinghamshire / Help re inquest report?
« on: Tuesday 16 September 08 20:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I want to try and track down the report of an inquest relating to my ancestor Samuel Godfrey, he died of "accidentally fell getting over stile and dislocated neck" - apparently while drunk.  The inquest was held on 22 August 1898.

If it helps, he died in Hanslope, he was b. circa 1828, and lived most of his life in Stoke Goldington, as an ag lab.  He was married to Tamar Lineham(or could be Lyman?) and had a son Thomas in 1859.

Any ideas where I would look for this?  ???

Thanks very much indeed!

Cate.
