Northumberland Lookup Requests / Marriage look up - William WILSON & Margaret MCDOUGALD
« on: Wednesday 23 September 20 16:58 BST (UK)  »
I would be grateful if anyone could help find the marriage of my 4 x great grandparents, William WILSON & Margaret MCDOUGALD.

I know nothing about them except that they had three children baptised at the Chapel Street Presbyterian Chapel, Spittal, Berwick upon Tweed.
Eleanor WILSON (my 3 x great grandmother) in 1799
John WILSON 1801
Margaret WILSON 1804

They could, of course have been married over the border in Scotland.

Many thanks,
Kevin

Northamptonshire / Marriage of Edward Foster & Mary Pain 1790/1 *SOLVED*
« on: Saturday 16 May 20 17:19 BST (UK)  »
I have found the Bishop's Transcript record of the marriage of Edward Foster & Mary Pain on Ancestry. However it does not give the exact date, but only that the marriage took place between Lady Day 1790 & Lady Day 1791 in the parish of Greens Norton.

Would anyone have access the the parish register that gives a date for the marriage? Any other details would be a bonus.

Many thanks,
Kevin

Northumberland / What happened to Thomas Kennedy?
« on: Friday 20 December 19 19:22 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help trace my 3x great grandfather Thomas Kennedy? I have searched for many years, but can find so little information. I have no idea where he came from or where he went to.

What little I know is as follows -

Marriage 13 April 1834, St. John's Church, Newcastle upon Tyne - Thomas Kennedy, of this parish, married Ann Wilson, of this parish. Witnesses, Thomas Crofton & Hannah Spotswood.

At the time of the 1841 census, Ann Kenady (25) is living with her 4 year old daughter Ann Kenady at the home of her parents Thomas & Ann Wilson in Chambers Court, St. John's parish, Newcastle. Ann is recorded as being of Independent Means.

At the 1851 census, Ann Kennedy(36, widow) is living with her 14 year old daughter Ann Kennedy at the home of her widowed mother Ann Wilson in  Buckhams Buildings, Thornton Street, Newcastle (St. Johns).

Ann Kennedy (daughter) marries my 2x great grandfather Robert Scott on 18 Feb 1856 at Newcastle Register Office.
Robert Scott - Age 20, Bachelor, Brass Finisher of Mansfield Street, Newcastle.  Father - James Scott, Blacksmith.
Ann Kennedy - Age 19, Spinster of Thornton Street, Newcastle.  Father - Thomas Kennedy, Tailor.
The witnesses were Thomas Oliver & George Forster Jnr

From the marriage certificate I can see that Thomas Kennedy was a Tailor and that is borne out by the baptismal record of his daughter at St. Andrews, Newcastle on 21 Dec 1836 - Jane Wilson Kennedy, of Newgate Street, daughter of Thomas (tailor) & Anne Kennedy.
(Another puzzle - Is Jane Wilson Kennedy the same person as Ann Kennedy? Jane is not mentioned in any census, nor can I find a death record, but all through her life Ann's age points to a 1836/37 birth).

Anyway, my big question is What happened to Thomas Kennedy the tailor. Was he dead before 1841 when he was not recorded with his wife Ann and daughter. I cannot find a death in the GRO registers between 1837-1851 in Newcastle registration district. The only one found is an infant (0 years) March Qtr 1843.
Does anyone have comprehensive burial records for Newcastle at that time which could locate him?
Any help is much appreciated.

Does anyone else use Durham Records Online?
I just bought an annual subscription last week and now for the last three days the site has been unobtainable.

Suffolk / Eliza Ethel Gant b.1895
« on: Sunday 28 August 16 16:27 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me find the death record of Eliza Ethel Gant? I cannot find it on Ancestry, FindMyPast or FreeBMD!

She was born in Elmsett, Suffolk on 19 June 1895, the daughter of Henry William Gant & his wife Lucy, nee Green. Birth registered (Sep Qtr 1895, Cosford) as Eliza Ethel Gant. She was christened at the Elmsett Methodist Chapel on 31 Jul 1895 as Elizabeth Ethel Gant - so that is another name possibility!

In 1901 (Aldham, Suffolk) as Eliza Gant aged 6 years.
In 1911 (Aldham, Suffolk) as Eliza Eleth Gant, aged 15 years.

According to a family member Eliza had severe learning difficulties and can be found in the 1939 Register, just over the county border in Dedham, Essex with her widowed mother, Lucy Gant.
Elizar Gant, born 19 Jun 1895, Female, Single, Incapacitated.

The death of her mother Lucy was registered in March Quarter 1950, Sudbury, Suffolk.
However, I cannot trace what happened to Eliza. Did she move in with one of her eight surviving siblings or did she go into a home to be cared for? Whatever the situation surely her death should be recorded somewhere?!! All her siblings (with one exception) died in Suffolk.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks, Kevin

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Cause of death?
« on: Monday 15 February 16 11:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Can anyone help me decipher the cause of death on this certificate?
The writing is good and looks to me like Silh(k?)ylitin Cachexia. I understand the last term to mean "cancer", but am really struggling with the first word.
The certificate is for Robert GANT who died aged 44 years in the Samford Union Workhouse in Tattingstone, Suffolk on 21 April 1853.
I am trying to ascertain whether this is the same Robert Gant from Hadleigh, Suffolk who was in Dartmoor Prison from 1850 until he was pardoned in February 1853. The last two surgeon's reports noted he had a "diseased scrotum".
Thanks, Kevin

The Common Room / Pronunciation of "Keturah"
« on: Wednesday 26 September 12 16:51 BST (UK)  »
My gg grandmother Keturah LLOYD was born in Burstall, Suffolk in 1845. She appears to have been named after her cousin Keturah DURRANT born in nearby Kersey, Suffolk in 1823.

My query is... how do you pronounce "Keturah" ??
Would it be "Ketch-ur-ah" or "Ket-ure-ah" etc etc.

It is not a name that I have heard in use today, so really would like to address my ancestor correctly!
No doubt the strong Suffolk accent of the 19th century would make a difference. it certainly did to the parish ministers who registered her christening & marriage. However it was the surname that confused him! She was christened - Keturah Lord and then married as Keturah Lloyd. That is consistent with the family as a whole in the parish of Burstall, Suffolk.

Any thoughts??

Essex / Where is "Thorndon, Essex" ?
« on: Thursday 16 June 11 18:05 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know where "Thorndon, Essex" could be?

I am looking for any further information on Esther H. GANT who in the 1891 census gave her place of birth as "Thorndon, Essex"
RG12/1407, Folio 110, page 13
41 Alexandra Road, Colchester (Holy Trinity), Essex
John C.(hristmas) GANT, Head, 42, Groom, born West Bergholt
Polly M.(iller) GANT, Wife, 36, born Stanway
Iva GANT, daughter, 10, born Stanway
Esther H. GANT, Aunt, Single, 72, born Thorndon, Essex

I cannot find any other trace of Esther GANT in the censuses. I believe that her parents may have been John SURREY & Esther GANT (no marriage traced) who had several other "base born" children christened in West Bergholt (1812-27)

The only Thorndon that I know is near Eye in Suffolk, but cannot see any family connection to that parish.

I would certainly appreciate any help offered. I only have a distant connection to this family and am trying to add other lines to my GANT family tree.

Thanks,
Kevin Scott

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Evening Chronicle Death Notice - SIMM
« on: Wednesday 16 February 11 19:30 GMT (UK)  »
Would SKS be able to look up two death notices in the Newcastle Evening Chronicle?
I am searching for the death of my gg grandfather. I last have him in the 1901 census residing in Byker aged 64 years. None of the GRO death indexes seem to match his given age.

I am hoping that the Evening Chronicle death notices will either find him or eliminate some candidates so that I need not purchase certificates.
The death notices are -

1. SIM, John - 19 Dec 1902 - Heaton
2. SIMM, John 7 Nov 1904 - W. Cramlington.

Many thanks in anticipation,
Kevin Scott
