Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / DNA Expert needed please
« on: Thursday 09 November 17 10:37 GMT (UK)  »
I have a "match" on Gedmatch Genesis with someone who shares 60 small matches spread fairly evenly across all chromosomes.  Two are in the 6-7 range.  We have a 7cm match on X and many smaller ones. I feel this is too many to be accidental.  We also have shared surnames and locations.  As a beginner I would appreciate some advice as to whether to pursue this or not.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Gedmatch Genesis - problems?
« on: Saturday 14 October 17 11:49 BST (UK)  »
My top matches on Gedmatch Genesis were generally quite strong but over the last week or so I have had a raft of new "top matches" which are quite poor.  It seems that they are now rating top matches solely on number of generations and ignoring everything else.  Had anyone else noticed this?

Europe / Berlin Marriage Records
« on: Sunday 03 September 17 00:07 BST (UK)  »
Hello Rootschatters,

I am hoping that someone might be able to help me with a mystery.

For over ten years I have been missing links which would tie a large chunk of family at the top of my tree to another chunk at the bottom.

I have recently made some progress and I just  have ONE fact left to find before I can join up both halves of my tree.

I am looking for a marriage in Berlin, Germany in June 1907.  The bride was Edna Loftus a famous English Actress and Winnie O Connor, a famous jockey.  Despite them both being famous the only reference to the marriage I can find is a small newspaper cutting dated December 1907 referring to their marriage in June that year in Berlin.

Edna married again in 1910 in the USA.  The names of her parents are blank!  I am hoping that I can find the Berlin record and hope even more that her father's name is given.

I am fairly sure she was born with a different first name but again there is no mention of this anywhere.  I have identified the individual I believe her to be and if this is true then she is a cousin.  Her father's name would confirm this.

Can anyone help me please ?

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Devon Marriage Records
« on: Sunday 18 June 17 11:37 BST (UK)  »
I wondered if a kind Rootschatter had access to Devon marriage records for 1875?

I an trying to find the father of a Philip Hingston who married Henrietta Ann H White in Plymouth in Q1 1875.  Ref 5b 464.

I have narrowed the Philips down to a couple of possibles but without the father's name I am stuck.  I am helping out as a volunteer on a one name study project so this is not my personal tree.

Any help would be appreciated.

Canada / Hingston Family - Devon, England to Calgary Alberta
« on: Monday 19 December 16 18:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I wondered if anyone could help me with Canadian records.  William John Hingston (born 1871) and Emma Hingston (1867) moved to Calgary, where they are listed in 1916.  Their children were Percy Harold (1895), Stanley (1895), Francis Henry (1899) and Winifred Alexandra (1902).  The children were all born in England.

I have found William and Emma's deaths in 1936 and 1937 in Calagry.  I have also found Percy's death in Vancouver in 1964.

Other than that I can't find out anything about this family.  My aim would be to make contact with living relatives so I wondered if anyone could advise me where to look for marriage/ death records etc.  Any help would be appreciated.  If anyone has information pertaining to living people please contact me via pm.  Thank you

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Help with dating please

My father always said that the attached photo was of his uncle. The uncle was born in 1888 and died in 1956. The uncle lived in Lancashire.

Looking at the photo, I think it might be someone from the generation before, born 1853 and died 1933.

I would be grateful to hear what you all think.

Mayo / Conway - did they come from Mayo?
« on: Sunday 24 July 16 10:32 BST (UK)  »
I have been researching this family in Ireland for years with no luck .  Maybe someone elso could look at the information for me.

My 3x great grandad was David Conway.  He was married to Mary (surname not known).  They had 4 children that I know of:
Mary born c 1821
James 1827-30
Bridget 1837
Ann 1846/48

I have documented proof that Mary and the children came to Lancashire and died here.  Mary died in 1860 aged 62, therefore born c. 1798.
I am assuming that David was born between 1790 and 1800.

Family stories say they came from Westport, Mayo.  James is in Ormskirk in 1851 with a birthplace of Westport.  The others don't appear in the 1851 census, and Mary died before 1861.

I have trawled records worldwide with no luck.  David was dead in 1852 according to his son James' marriage certificate and as Ann was born c 1847, assuming he was the father, he must have died between 1846-52.

Another distraction is that James' birthplace is Cork in the 1901 census!

I have recently discovered another family in Thomastown, Kilkenny and wonder if they are one and the same.

David Conway b.c. 1792, Kilkenny
Wife Judith

MARY. 1822
Edmund  1824
Honor 1827
JAMES 1828
Catherine1833
John 1831
Margaret 1835
William 1837
BRIDGET 1837
Peter 1839
Michael 1841

All born Kilkenny.

I always thought there could be more children because of the gaps.  Three of my family names fit in.

Some of the names were the same as James' children - Mary, Catherine, John, Margaret, Peter.

Questions:

Would a family travel from Kilkenny to Mayo then on to England?

Is it likely that Judith died, and David married Mary, with Ann being their daughter?

Why would James say he was born in Westport?

I would love to be able to prove this theory.  There was a death of a Judith Conway in Thomastown in 1871 which would discount all of the above but I can't find if it was David's wife or not.

The Heritage centre and my trip to Westport didn't turn up a single clue!

The Lighter Side / Help offered with voter's roll
« on: Sunday 13 December 15 13:16 GMT (UK)  »
I have a subscription to a voter's roll website which I want to cancel.  I have a large number of credits which I will lose if I cancel now so rather than lose them I am prepared to offer one look up per person on a first come, first served basis.  Please make sure to include as much information as you can and I would prefer it if you contacted me by pm.  The subscription is to the current voter's rolls not historical ones
