Occupation Interests / East India Company Records
« on: Tuesday 09 October 07 16:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi, sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this question, but I wasn't sure where to post it and plumped for here :)

Does anyone know if there are records for employees of the East India Company in London during the early to mid 1800s and if there are, where I would find them?  I've tried googling, but seem to go round in circles and not get anywhere!  (job description of individual concerned was office clerk, and then elder, and then pensioner of the East India Company).

Many thanks for any help you can give me.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Clean up my grandad please
« on: Saturday 06 October 07 09:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi, was wondering if some kind person would clean up my grandad for me.  He died before I was born and I had never even seen a photograph of him until recently - while I was talking to my aunt on the phone about my family history research I mentioned that I had no idea what he looked like and she sent me a copy of this photograph.  So in my mid-30's I finally 'met' my grandad  :)

-edit- above is a low res. copy of the pic to show it on the thread, the link below contains the high res image

Suffolk Completed Lookup Requests / 1841/51 lookup please - Hicks
« on: Thursday 27 September 07 14:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I'm hoping someone might be able to help me find William John Hicks on the 1841 or 1851 census please.

His son Edward David Hicks was born in 1826 and christened at St Peter, Walworth, Surrey.  Parents are listed as William John and Catherine Hicks.

On Edward's marriage certificate in 1854 his father is listed as William John Hicks - occ. office clerk.  Edward's address is given as Waterloo Road.

In 1861 Edward is living in Southwark.  (10 Grey Street and later at 37 Surrey Row).

By the time of Edward's next marriage 1865 he lists his father as William Hicks (deceased) occ. Elder in the East India Warehouse.  By now Edward is in Shoreditch.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me to find Richard Wigzell.

I have only a few details via his son Thomas Wigzell - Thomas was a bricklayer born about 1815 in Holborn.  On the 1841 census he was already living away from his parents in Clerkenwell and working as a bricklayer.  On his marriage certificate from 1842 his father is listed as Richard Wigzell, bricklayer.  Thomas was described on later census returns as 'deaf and dumb' from birth, as was his wife Elizabeth.

I know it's a bit of an ask as I have so few details, but am hoping Wigzell is an unusual enough name to perhaps narrow the search down.  Thanks.

-edit- just to add, I've found a death entry for Richard Wigzell March qtr 1852 Holborn, which is probably him, seems likely he was in the Holborn area at the time of the census as Thomas was born there too.

Herefordshire Completed Look up Requests / 1851 census lookup request - Langford
« on: Tuesday 14 August 07 21:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I was wondering if any kind soul would be able to help me please?  After a long break from research I recently found the gravestone for my g-g-g-g-grandparents Thomas and Jane Langford of Kimbolton in Herefordshire during a day trip there.

The headstone reads 'Here rest the remains of Thomas Langford who died Feb 1, 1857 aged 81 years - also Jane his wife who died Nov 18 (?) 1866 aged 88 (?)'.

I would greatly appreciate a census lookup for them in 1851, I'm particularly interested to know the occupation of Thomas.

Thanks.
