Renfrewshire / Hunter of Greenock
« on: Thursday 11 April 24 23:58 BST (UK)  »
Just doing a story of one Hunter family in Greenock, of whom a number emigrated to Australia.
I have access to Greenock Post Office directories but not 1841 census details to confirm occupations.
The known facts are:
Robert Hunter m. Isabel Ross 14 Dec 1805 Greenock Middle. We know of 13 children. Robert was a tanner. We do not know his death c1838.
Based on bapt of children, my guess is that the family moved from West Greenock to Cartsdyke in 1811 or thereafter.
If anyone is interested, then I would appreciate some lookups please:
1841 census Mansings [maybe Mansion] Lane, Greenock, the occupation of William Hunter living with his mother Isabella Hunter and sisters.
Her eldest son Archibald b. 1806 may have been a baker at 50 Carthcart Street, Greenock. Does the 1841 census give his wife as Isabella and daughter Catherine, Jane, Robert?
Gilbert Hunter born 1809. He married Agnes McKinlay in 1830 Where is he in 1843 Greenock (and occupation) before he came to Sydney in by 1851?
John Hunter b.1811 East Greenock, He started out a tanner in Cartsdyke and became a missionary in Greenock. He married Mary Gilchrist on 21 May 1841 Greenock, so 1841 census may show him still in Greenock.
Daniel Ross Hunter b. 1813. He married Sarah Hunter in 1832 Greenock. He should be a fellmonger in Ladyburn or Cartsdyke. I have his emigration details.
Robert Hunter b. 1818 was single in 1841. He may be a tanner around Cartsdyke He is not married. He left for Australia c1842.
James Hunter b.1820 will not be in Greenock. He left Greenock for Sydney c1838 but I cannot find a single immigrant's name (only married couples) on ship Duncan that left Greenock in 1838.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Pembrokeshire / Castle Hotel/Inn Haverfordwest
« on: Sunday 03 December 23 23:01 GMT (UK)  »
I would like to research more information on the Castle Hotel/Inn in Haverfordwest.

In particular, as to when my ancestor David Rees (1757-1837) became a partner in its lease before 1797 and the names of the other lessees.

Maybe someone had access to when the Barlow family constructed the building.

My ancestor David Rees sold his lease to Lewis Pugh in 1805 (newspaper article attached). Lewis Pugh also returned there in 1820 from Derby farm St. Issels Haroldston, when Rees brought back his lease of Derby farm.
Attached also an imaged of the hotel.

Surrey / John William Banks 1787 East Ham - 1868 1 Melior Place, Surrey
« on: Friday 10 November 23 02:58 GMT (UK)  »
I have moved onto another of the Banks' siblings born at Wall End, East Ham, Essex during the 1700's.
Four of the siblings lived around the Southwark/Bermondsey area during the early 1800's and your members have assisted greatly with other information.

I have some information on John William Banks 1787-1868, a shoemaker. Contrary to other family members, I am leading toward that he had more than one marriage and to more than one wife named Sarah. Leading to this theory is the baptism of a boy James Cooper Banks 15 Nov 1807 Bermondsey, when he would have just finished his apprenticeship. Then there is a boy named Samuel Cooper Banks 13 Apr 1817 in St. Mary Magdalene, East Ham. Assuming a third wife named Sarah [Elizabeth] Unknown, then seven other  chn  were born in St. Olave Parish, around Marble Court and Meilor Streets, during the 1820 and 1830s.

Before I purchase the death record of James Cooper Banks c29 Oct 1843 Bermondsey, I would like to ask if someone could James'  location in Bermondsey in 1841 Census with a wife Rosina and three children. John William Banks and his family lived in 4 Ganibure Rents which would be between Wenton Street and Bermondsey Road, St. Olave.

The reason as to why I think that James Cooper Banks may be a son of John William Banks is that  one month after his baptism, John Banks and Richard Cooper were the witnesses of the marriage of Henry [James] Banks to Ann Rugg. on 28 Dec 1807 St. Mary Rotherhithe.

London and Middlesex / Eleanor O'Neal of Shoreditch
« on: Wednesday 04 October 23 02:01 BST (UK)  »
Look up please

Is there any details of a baptism of Eleanor O'Neale in Shoreditch area. I have an Eleanor O'Neale who married William Banks on 1 Mar 1830 St. Leonard's Shoreditch, both of that parish. I have also Eleanor Banks, aged 31, who was buried on 17 Sep 1840 at St. Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney with her abode as being Mile End Old Town.
This not enough evidence to prove that she was the first wife of Henry William Banks, a widow, who married Frances Raven on 21 Feb 1841 St. Bride, London, although it does record that he lived in Bell Street, Mile End New Town. Henry William Banks was a currier.

London and Middlesex / Cdv
« on: Friday 29 September 23 04:05 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone offer some advice on what Cdv 6-36 Banks in Chancery would mean?

The context is that a Joseph Banks of Richmond [Victoria] wrote a reply in response to a letter dated 26 Jan 1893 in which he was informed that that there was a sum of £6,000 and referenced as Cdv 6-36 Banks, in Chancery and waiting to be claimed.

He confirmed that his grandfather James [Henry James] Banks had a brother John Banks who had left for the colonies many years ago. My research shows that his brother John Banks was a shoemaker in Surrey and he left under 600 pounds in 1868. He had a large family in London, so I doubt that it was him.

Henry James Banks may have had a son in Rotherhithe in 1808 named John Banks [thus Joseph's uncle] and it may have been him that left for the colonies and made a fortune, then returned to London.

Joseph Banks and family in Australia (1890s) and his cousins in Cordova Street, Bethnal Green  were entitled to a good sum of money & property some of which Joseph Banks believed was situated in Covent Gardens, London.

Joseph Banks went on to say that he had an uncle by the name of H. Harris and that his father [James Banks] left valuable papers concerning his uncle’s fortune. Joseph Banks was born in Bermondsey 1856 and his father James Banks and grandfather Henry Banks both did live with Harris family members [census details] before James Banks emigrated to Hobart in 1859. The Harris family were related to Ann Brown, the wife of James Banks, a currier, of Bermondsey.
