Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Help with Date of Photo Please
« on: Saturday 19 May 12 16:47 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I believe that this is a photo of my grandfather b 1905, and if so it would have been taken around the 1920s I imagine. Does this seem right to anyone in the know? I have a nagging doubt, and wonder if it might actually be his father who was born 1869.

Many thanks.

Hello,

Could anyone please let me know what they the think the final word in the last line says please? I thought it says "a bastard without natural mother" but this doesn't really make sense! I didn't really realise such terminology was still in use in 1959!

I'm only just starting to research this gentleman. He married the sister of my great-grandmother, and the story handed down in the family is that he was the illegitimate son of the Duke of Norfolk who visited a local country house where his mother was a nursery nurse. I will be interested to see his birth certificate!

I'd also like to find out what Tsy Ret 1959 stands for if anyone happens to know!

Many thanks,

Helen

Armed Forces / India Register 1855

Hello,

Can anyone please tell me what "Seas of Appt." means? I am looking at the Bengal 27th Regiment Native Infantry list. If it is the date a person first joined the regiment, then that means the person I'm looking at (Charles Harris) cannot be my relative as he was born in 1830!

Many thanks.

London and Middlesex / Richard Charles Payne - he disappears after 1891
« on: Sunday 04 March 12 21:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I was wondering if fresh eyes might help me locate my husband's great-grandfather Richard Charles Payne b 1857 at 6 Oxford Market, Marylebone, and who was a butcher, as he seems to disappear after 1891, although his wife still lists herself as married in the 1901 and 1911 census returns. Everything appears normal up until 1891 as I can find him in each census return. I am assuming perhaps his business failed and he ended up in a debtor's jail - or maybe in jail for crime - as in 1901 I can find some of the children in various children's homes. His wife Amelia Ann Payne (b 1860, Pimlico) is working as a general domestic servant for a bank manager in Heston in the 1901 census. In 1911 she is again working as a domestic servant living in Belgravia Square. Both times she lists herself as married, but there is no sign of her husband or children. I cannot find Richard' death either. When his son, my husband's grandfather Frederick Richard Payne (b 1890) married in 1918 his father is listed as dead and his name is written as Charles Richard which suggest he may have been known as Charles - or else he son never really knew him and so got his name wrong!  Any help or suggestions as to what may have happened would be gratefully recieved.

Many thanks.

Canada / Victoria Daily Times Archives/General Advice please!
« on: Saturday 31 December 11 13:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm just starting to look into my Canadian connection and am looking for some advice. The person in question is Thomas H Jones (my great-grandmother's brother) whom I know nothing about except that he was a gold miner on Vancouver Island. I have a very old battered copy of an article which he must have sent to England about him and his mining partner Mr Scott,  from the Victoria Daily Times, dated 28 August 1901 - "Island Hillsides Yield Gold Dust - Marvellous Wealth of Commerall Camp". Parts of it are now unreadable and I would love to be able to obtain a readable copy. Does anyone know if the Victoria Daily Times archives are available anywhere? I had a look online but could only find archived copies for the Times Colonist.

Unfortunately there a few Thomas H Jones living in the area. However I have found a Thomas H Jones living on Vancouver Island in the 1901 census index, so I assume this is him. It gives his date of birth as Feb 12 1852. I have then found a death for the same person, aged 63, on 25 Oct 1915 in Vancouver. I have also noticed that there are 2 entries in the incoming passenger list index for a Thomas H Jones with his date of birth.

I also have a copy of a letter to my great-grandmother from the Gold Commissioner (J A Fraser) dated May 7th 1917, Atlin, BC. It seems he had also written to the family prior to this letter, to inform them of Mr Jones' death "shortly after leaving this district for Vancouver" of which they were unaware. He knew Thomas personally and says some nice things about him. He also talks about a third interest he had in four Mineral Claims on Munro Mountain, and says that it should realise about £1,000. However it would be interesting to know what really happened to his business interests, as I don't think any money came our way!

If anybody is able to point me in the right direction so that I can find out any further information, I would be very grateful. Thank you.

Helen

The Lighter Side / Good News! Marriage found after 20 years of looking!!
« on: Friday 23 September 11 13:08 BST (UK)  »
Hello!

I just wanted to randomly share my good news!!!!! After more than 20 years of searching I have at last found the marriage of my great-great grandparents, George Edwards and Ellen Vick and I am SOOOOO happy!!

I had got to the point where I assumed that they might never have actually married.  Both were born in Gloucestershire in 1845 and their first child was born in 1867. In the 1871 census (where they were living in Norfolk) and thereafter (when they were back in Gloucestershire) they are listed as married - in fact in 1911 they say they have been married for 45 years (ie since 1866). Obviously I concentrated my search on marriages in the 1860s, but could I find a marriage for them.......no.

Anyway, after another effort at searching more widely, the certificate finally arrived today - they were actually married in 1886.......in London!  He obviously decided to finally make an honest woman of her for their 20th "anniversary"! I presume they went off to London to marry where nobody would know them, as I know of no other connection to London. How romantic!

The moral is - never give up searching!!

Hello,

I have disovered that my husband's great-grandparents were married at The Sorrowful Hearts of Jesus & Mary (Catholic Church) in Kensington in 1892. I wondered if anyone knows anything about the church or where it was/is situated. I've done a quick internet search but didn't find anything. It also doesn't appear in a list of Victorian London churches which I checked, so maybe it changed its name?

Many thanks.  :)

FH Documents and Artefacts / COMPLETED THANKS - Help with handwriting
« on: Sunday 28 August 11 17:59 BST (UK)  »
Hello, could anyone please help with with the last entry on this page?

It is a baptism entry for George Joseph Symonds. I cannot work out the father's name at all. I think the first letter might be "N" - if you look at "No occupation" under the previous entry, it does look the same. Any help with the "Abode" would also be appreciated too!

Many thanks.

Dublin / James Andrew Brophy b, circa 1830, Belfast
« on: Saturday 05 February 11 21:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm trying to find out some more about my husband's great-great grandfather, James Andrew Brophy.  I have only been able to find one reference to him in any records so far. He appears in the 1891 census, living in Fulham, London and his profession is "Architect & Surveyor". His age is recorded as 61, and place of birth is Belfast. His wife is Mary Anne Brophy. I have not been able to find him in any other English census returns, so I wonder if he was in Ireland before and after 1891. His daughter, Bridget Mary Brophy remained in London and was my husband's great-grandmother. However her place of birth was Dublin so the family must have been resident there at some point.

If anyone can help find any other mention of him in any records or can suggest where I might look, I would be very grateful.

Kind regards,

Helen
