Antrim / Bogtown in the Braid
« on: Thursday 16 December 10 23:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Antrim historians.

Do any of you have any idea where Bogtown on/in the Braid would be?

I have a narrative pertaining to someone i hope to find is a direct ancestor and their home is titled as Bogtown in the Braid (and is presumably in the general area of Slemish/Broughshane)

The person in particular is Nancy (Nannie) Boyd who was the wife of Thomas Craford of the Braid. They had 3 children, Robert, William and Janet (who would marry Matthew Crawford of Raloo who is presumed to be her cousin)

My Crawford line has been based in Ballycraigagh/Ballycregagh near Clough, Antrim since early 1800s where the earliest confirmed ancestor is Robert (Robin) Crawford.
The 1766 Freeholders has a Matthew Crawford of Ballycraigagh. My aim is to find out what if any link there is to this Matthew Crawford of Ballycraigagh and the Matthew Crawford of Raloo and I think this family at Bogtown in the Braid could be the link.

Thanks

Antrim / Has anyone heard of the surname ADSAY
« on: Tuesday 24 November 09 22:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have been researching one of my family lines with unexpected success this week. It gave me the name of my GGG grandmother who was a MARY JANE ADSAY, daughter of ROBERT ADSAY and Mary Kidd.

I can find very few references to this name at all in Northern Ireland, and indeed the only place where i have seen it is on facebook where most with this name are from Turkey or a directory for a few Adsays living in New York.

Does anyone have any information on this family name....is it a coincidence that there is also a turkish Adsay surname or is this a sign of some middle-near eastern ancestry in my blood?

Regards

David

Ayrshire / Crawford in Kilbirnie
« on: Saturday 18 April 09 19:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am researching my family tree and have reached an impasse in Northern Ireland.
Basically, I know my direct line back to my GT(*4) Grandfather Robert (Robin) Crawford of Ballycregagh, Co. Antrim. The farm he ran is still in the family.
Most of the generations in between and inclusive of him are buried in the nearby Dunaghy Old Graveyard.
So what brings me to the Ayrshire page....
well, from records and gravestones I know the names of several more Crawfords in the area who were an older generation. But, in particular 2 of the gravestones in Dunaghy Old name a John and a James Crawford and they have family shields on their headstone.

I traced these shields to the family Crawford-Barclay of Kilbirnie.

So I wondered if anyone knows if records would exist in the church (or from this important family at the time) of family membersw who migrated to County Antrim in the 1600s-1700s.

Any help is gratefully received.

Antrim / McCue & Beattie
« on: Wednesday 04 March 09 15:49 GMT (UK)  »
Last one for you all to mull over for today.

My Gt Gt Grandfather James Robert McCue married Mary Ann Beattie in @1882.
They are found in Ballygarvey in 1911 with several of their children.

My granny says James was a bit of a mystery to everyone as he didnt seem to have much family (she thought he may have been illegitimate).

He is buried in Broughshane at the Ch. of Ireland and his grave stone stands almost on top of a 2nd older McCue grave. This grave was erected by a Robert McCue for his mum and dad (Elizabeth & Michael McCue) and his son Michael McCue who died in 1859 aged 22.

James was born @1858 and hence would have been an infant when Michael died.

My working theory at the moment is Michael was his father and died when James was very young and meaning he was raised by his mum or his grandparents. I think this would account for much of the hearsay (such as being illegitamate) but I'd very much like to put more proof to his life.

Has anyone got a connection to the McCues who might be able to help or have access to Ch. of Ireland records which might give his parents names.

Also, for Mary Ann I know nothing. (I dont think she was buried with James). Does anyone have any info which could help me trace her and her ancestors. She would have been born about 1863.
They had 9 kids (all surviving in 1911 though only 6 still at home with mum and dad) so i'm hoping that there is someone else out there who could know something.

Many thanks

David

Antrim / McBride & Hamilton
« on: Wednesday 04 March 09 15:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi again,

Looking at another branch I would like to add more detail to my McBride line.
I know that my Gt Gt grandparents were Robert McBride and Martha Hamilton.
Their marriage record for 19/10/1885 at Wellington St, Ballymena details their fathers as James McBride (farmer from Ballygarvey) and Arthur Hamilton (gardener from Ballymena)

From the 1911 census I know Robert was born @1846 and Martha @1862.

I'd love to get this branch further back and secretly am hoping Willy John McBride is a distant relation. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Antrim / Milliken & Robinson
« on: Wednesday 04 March 09 15:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hello again everyone,

I am moving on to my mums side of the family and have managed ok but it is proving difficult to get much earlier than my Gt Gt Grandparents.

They were Robert Milliken and Susan (Susanna) Robinson. They can be found in Ballytweedy in 1911 census with their 2 children Robina (my Gt granny) and Mary Agnes and their nephew Bob Young.
I believe they were married at Loanends United Pres. on 25/10/1894 but havent found that record on ancestryireland to find out details of their parents.

Can anyone offer any help withthis couple.

Antrim / Crawford of The Colliery
« on: Sunday 15 February 09 13:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi folks,
I am searching for information about a gravestone found in Clough Graveyard (Dunaghy Old).
Unfortunately it is now rather worn down but we do have a photo of it when it was in a bit better condition.
The inscription reads "Here lieth the body of John Crawford, C------C Colliery Office who departed this life the 10th of May 1769 aged 49 years."
Does anyone know the possible colliery it is referring to or if records exist for something that long ago?
Thanks

Antrim / Crawford & Strahan anyone
« on: Wednesday 07 January 09 19:25 GMT (UK)  »
I am hoping that someone can help with finding my 18th century ancestors.
My G/G/G Grandfather Robert Crawford b.05.04.1791 d.12.12.1874 from Clough (Ballycraigagh) was married to Ann Strahan b.12.11.1786 d. @Dec 1848.

I have been to Clough graveyard and found their childrens graves (2 of their sons are ancestors) but crucially not their graves.

My feeling/hope is Ann would have been buried in her family graveyard with her parents. Following this Robert would have been placed with her when he passed on in 1874.

Does anyone know of a way to locate their resting place?

Happy new year, and thanks for any help.
