Roscommon / French Park
« on: Wednesday 04 March 09 12:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have a Michael Cullen, on the 1871 census for Leeds he has birthplace as Ireland, County Roscommon then in 1881, French Park, Ireland. I can find French Park as a big estate but using French Park in searches doesn't seem to help, would it come under another parish?

Thanks
Jen

Sligo / Place name - Banaker
« on: Wednesday 04 March 09 12:20 GMT (UK)  »
I have a Irish family who ended up in Leeds via Manchester.

I am having trouble locating place of birth for Margaret Garraghan... on the 1871 census she is listed as being born Ireland, county Sligo (about 1833), then on the 1881 as what I think says Banaker? If I'm reading it correctly the closest I can find on a map is Ballincar near Sligo (thinking of accents etc it seems close).

Any ideas? I'm attaching an image of the census entry just in case I'm not reading it correctly

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Foster in Yorkshire and GRO
« on: Wednesday 25 February 09 23:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

I think this is better in here as it's more a GRO problem than specifically Yorkshire, though if the mods think otherwise?  ;D

I have been looking at a family in Leeds for someone, I'm not going into depth but doing a basic framework for them to go on as many of the names are very common and they were struggling.

I'm quite pleased with myself as I managed to get their Smith family back to 1790 without much trouble but now I'm kind of stuck on the Foster family!

It starts with an Eileen Foster born 1925 in Leeds (deceased)
Her grandfather was James Foster born 1864 in Newby Yorkshire, Newby is a tiny place near Clapham, Yorkshire and all the baptisms seem to be there, on census you get various versions of birthplace... newby clapham, clapham newby or either on their own.

I've pinned James down, his father is Christopher Foster baptised 1807 in Clapham, on census he's 1808. Now there are two Christopher Fosters born within a year of each other from Clapham, and another one or two within normal searches i.e. +/- 2 to 5 years. The Christopher I'm concerned with is on census as a school master ( I have family info' that clarify he's the right one the other one a grocer seems to be his cousin).

Ok down to the nitty gritty!

In 1841 I have him as aged 30  and with wife Jane also 30, children are Mary aged 10, Sarah 8, Isabella 5, William 3... there is also a Margaret aged 9 who I can't place. This fits OK, he married Jane Robinson on the 28th Sept 1806 in Clapham and the children are all on the IGI (from record not user). The IGI also has twins? Jane and Elizabeth baptised 19th June 1841

1851 sees him with wife Eleanor Agnes born about 1824 in Sedburgh, children Sarah Ann, William and Jane as above, plus Eleanor Agnes aged 3 and Elizabeth Haygarth aged 2, that fits OK as there is a marriage for Christopher  Foster and Eleanor Agnes Haygarth on the GRO - 2Q 1847, Settle, 23/513, I presume Jane Foster's death because of the gap in children... their are too many Jane Foster deaths to pin one down exactly.

1861 - Now we find Christopher living in Lawkland with wife Ann born about 1803 in Hawes, with Ann a daughter I can't place (could be his wifes who has taken his name?)

1871 - Christopher is now back in Clapham but with birthplace as Skipton, I'm pretty sure it's the same one, considering the occupation and cross referencing the other Christophers, here we have sons John Robert aged 10  and James aged 7, James being Eileen's grandfather, James' eldest son was named John Robert as well.

So you ask if I'm only doing the basics what's the problem?

I can't find wife 1's death aka Jane Robinson but the GRO evidence of a marriage to Eleanor Agnes Haygarth and the daughters middle name supports that.

I'm stuck because I can't find a death record for wife 2 Eleanor Agnes and a marriage for wife 3 Ann and Ann's maiden name and parents are the ones I need!

HELP!

Hope it makes sense!!!

Dorset / Dorset OPC - email problems
« on: Sunday 22 February 09 01:00 GMT (UK)  »
As I know many of you use the OPC and often recommend it to others, I would appreciate it if you could pass this on..

We have an ongoing problem with email as in none of it is getting through to the OPC's or me! I have posted an email address on the Dorset OPC homepage where people can send mail and I will forward it to the relevant OPC, for parishes without an OPC still send the mail with the parish in the subject line and I will do my best to pass it onto someone who can help.

Dorset Completed Look up Requests / DHC - Lookups???
« on: Tuesday 20 January 09 19:41 GMT (UK)  »
I am going to Dorchester - Dorset History centre tommorrow (Tues 21st).
I am happy to do lookups for people but need a few limits...

I won't have time to blanket search so you'll need to be fairly sure what your after...

*grans wedding 3Q 1855 in Shillingstone

*gran married in 1895 in the Blandford District & lived most of her life in Stickland, her hubby was from Durweston

*fred and his siblings were all born in Pucknowle can you find their baptisms...

You get my gist... a lot of the earlier records are transcribed so they are a bit easier to track down, if your not sure I've got a list of all the Dorset parishes with what's indexed so can give you an idea if what you need will be simple or more complicated. I'll need to know mostly by about 1am (UK time obv) but will do a quick check before I go in the morning... I've got to catch a bus at 9.30 and I'm not a morning person  ;) so if I don't get a lookup before I go I'll check in a couple of weeks time.

Dorset Resources & Offers / Link: Dorset Churches

This is Peter Walker's personal website http://www.peterwalker.info/

Click on the Dorset Churches link to the left which will take you to an alphabetical list of Churches. I sometimes use Peter's photos when I can't get somewhere to take a picture for the OPC. I know there are lots of photos online but this is great as they are all in one place.
