Technical Help / Using a card reader.
« on: Saturday 18 July 15 14:25 BST (UK)  »
I`ve just bought a Belkin card reader hoping to transfer some photos from an acquaintance`s  TDK 4GB card to my computer.

However, when I try to push the card in the SDHC slot on the card reader there`s some resistance.
I`m worried that if I force it, I could damage the card and the photos on it.

I`m obviously doing something wrong as per usual  ;D......but what??

Jay.

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Re Emma Lavender 1891
« on: Wednesday 04 March 15 20:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Can someone please do a look up for me on the 1891 census for Emma Lavender.
She was at Westgate Newcastle on Tyne with a William Graham (widower) on the 1891 census.
I took note of her name but no other details about her, and I`m curious re what her connection with William Graham was.
 TIA

Technical Help / Digital camera help please..
« on: Tuesday 03 March 15 16:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,  Watching the world and his wife snapping away using their digital cameras I finally treated myself to a Fuji AX6500. ;D
`Easy to use ...minimum of buttons`- surely even this dozy old bird can`t go wrong!
Oh no! ... Why is the Sandisk 32GB card I bought in two pieces.
Blimey!  The pdf manual pages show baffling instructions with umpteen arrows and/or buttons /pointing back /forward/up/down/ this way /that way/and so on ad infinitum supposed to show me how to set and use the camera just by using just three small hard to see circles and a square on the camera.   By now I`m in total mental block mode. :'(
Before I  reach for the tablets and whisky bottle,  anyone got any suggestions for an easy to follow  website  to metaphorically walk me stage by stage  through the `How to` of digital cameras ?
TIA   Jay.

Technical Help / Suggestions for free email programme.
« on: Saturday 28 February 15 14:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
For years I  used Outlook Express for my emails with no problems whatsoever .
However, Microsoft then dumped Live Mail instead on OE users in a `like it or lump it` move.

It`s so frustrating when emails suddenly disappear into the ether.  Sometimes they show up weeks later but even then it`s sod`s law if I can open them again or not.
Well, Microsoft, enough is enough! I don`t like it and don`t want to carry on lumping it either.

I`d be really grateful for recommendations for a free, easy to use email programme please.

Thanks Jay.

Suffolk / Title of old book about Suffolk?
« on: Thursday 06 November 14 19:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Some years ago I read an old book about the author`s life in Suffolk.  It may possibly have been written by a woman as I remember but I`m not certain (?).
The descriptions were so wonderfully detailed that I could actually picture the scenes as I read the book.
One scene in particular, which I`ve never forgotten, was how skylarks at that time were so abundant that large flocks moved ahead of the farmworkers as they worked in the fields.

I`m hoping that someone might know the book I`m referring to.
I`d love to read it again but with no idea of the title I`ve drawn a blank searching for it.

Thanks,  Jay.

England / Free family tree charts ?
« on: Tuesday 30 September 14 18:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I`m hoping to do a family tree as a surprise prezzie for a friend, but can`t find a free one with:
1.  more than 5 generations.
2.  ability to add children.
3.  room to add basic details eg. bmd

I`ve tried (unsuccessfully) using Microsoft Word/Excel/\Powerpoint.

Many sites say they`re free yet you have to sign up and/or jump through hoops.  ::)
Any ideas?

Technical Help / Re BT quad phones problems.
« on: Monday 08 September 14 13:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Can someone advise if I need to replace my BT Synergy 4500 quad phone handsets  rather than just the batteries.
Within hours of  putting new batteries in each of the phones they`ve died the death again. ???

The green phone symbol and red battery light on the base set are lit up and each handset displays a flashing Base 1 plus a flashing phone symbol but the phones still don`t work.
 Thanks, Jay

Technical Help / BT WiFi FON hijacking connection to tablet.
« on: Friday 29 August 14 15:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I`m having problems trying to connect my new Asus tablet to my internet provider (Talktalk). It  was at the top of a list of providers on the tablet when I first tried to connect so I certainly didn`t think there would be any problems..
However, each time I try to click on Talktalk - BT Wi FON  the second name on the list -  - moves up to first place and you end up clicking on that instead.

Any ideas how to get rid of the hi-jacking horror that seems determined to force me to use it.

TIA Jay.
