Shropshire / Shropshire Asylum records available?
« on: Saturday 24 October 20 14:22 BST (UK)  »
Found my way here today via a search for Shropshire Asylum, as just discovered that a 2 cousin x2 was admitted and discharged early in 1908.

Hadn't been able to understand why she was still in her home county until her death in 1965, when husband and children were in his home county of Durham, certainly from 1901, and for the rest of their lives.  Would love to know the story, but of course very likely never to.

Having searched around, I see that Shropshire Archives may be of help, but does anyone know if
1) you can apply for a readers ticket if not in the county
2) can copies of documents be purchased, and emailed, or are they only viewable at the Archives?

Thanks for reading

Australia / Time served convicts return to UK
« on: Monday 19 October 20 18:25 BST (UK)  »
Hello All

Is there anywhere I would be able to find out when, and how, a person transported in 1838, having served his sentence and received a certificate of freedom in 1846, might have returned to England?

Lancashire / North Road, Clifton, Swinton
« on: Tuesday 15 September 20 17:38 BST (UK)  »
Hello all, not been here for a while, but hoping some knowledgeable person can help.

On the 1861 census I have an address of Green Bank House, North Road, Clifton.  I have searched but am unable to find out where it is, or was.   Is the North Road of 1861 now Manchester Road?
Dixon Fold is on the maps I can find, and North Road seems to have been in the same locale.

Any help please?

Cheshire / Ridgway Lane, Stockport
« on: Sunday 15 March 20 13:17 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for help locating Ridgway Lane in Stockport on old maps, circa 1800.  I've tried several but don't see it marked, although from the 1841 census I see that it was probably in the somewhere around the current Magistrates/County Court, that is Edward Street, Piccadilly, John Street area.

However, my search for this address originates from a 1795 Will, in which a dwelling/land 'at or near Ridgway Lane in Stockport' was bequeathed, so I'm interested in how the area would have looked at the end of 18th century.

If anyone can help, I thank you in advance.

Lancashire / Accrington place name - Loder Terrace, Burnley Road
« on: Thursday 28 February 19 14:51 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone please help to find any map with the address of Loder (or Loder's) Terrace in Accrington.  According to the 1861 census it is described as 'part of Burnley Road called Loder Terrace'.

All the maps I have tried so far come up with nothing, so can anyone pinpoint this, or lead me in the right direction please.  I have gone up and down on streetview in the hope that some of the terraces have the name inserted into the stonework, but can't see it.

United States of America / Searching for divorce records circa 1900
« on: Monday 29 October 18 11:07 GMT (UK)  »
Are there any divorce records available for Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont?

I have 3 people who all married twice, and at second marriage each says they are divorced!

My 2 cousin x1 - Mary Jane Dobson is the link.  First marriage to Bertram Foster Chase, second marriage to William F M Smith.  I would like to solve the puzzle if possible, so I hope the following makes sense,  It's in chronological order, so may not.....

1892: Hudson, New Hampshire.  Mary Jane Dobson marries Bertram Foster Chase.  Both single.

1903: Lynn, Massachusetts.  William FM Smith marries Bertha May Kenyon.  Both single.

1905: Montpelier, Vermont.  Bertram marries Juliette, a widow, stating that he is divorced.

1909: Lynn, Massachusetts. Mary Jane (Dobson) Chase marries William F M Smith.  Both state 2nd marriage, and are divorced.

So, might there be records somewhere to confirm divorces, or do I have to think that they just separated and all married bigamously?

Any, and all input very welcome.
