Armed Forces / William John Harris missing records
« on: Saturday 08 August 20 15:27 BST (UK)  »
seek help with finding service record and or medal entitlement with Great grandfathers brothers military history.

William John Harris is believed to have served in the Army Service Corps....there is a photo of him in the uniform and he did serve during WW1. he was from Morriston Glam, Wales. He had a brother Philip. In 1911 census both are with mother is Winefred age 45. William is 21.
both lads worked underground.
He definitely served in WW1.....for how long we don't know, what he did or where served is known either.
when he left military he stayed in London area and was a tram conductor.  his mind was believed to be  affected. early twenties he went home to Merthyr, Wales, to stay with brother. then go to visit relatives in Swansea area (mumbles) where he then committed suicide, leaving a letter.
Family myth is that he was sacked from tram job following argument with female passenger concerning the war.
I am going around in circles, cant find anything.....but acknowledge that many of you are far more experienced than I in finding info.

any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

« on: Saturday 08 August 20 14:57 BST (UK)  »
Hello to all you kind souls,

I seek help finding the service records and/or medal records for William Henry Clapp.....I am drawing blanks and going around in circles, I barely qualify as novice.

William is listed on 1901 census married to Fanny Lavinia, 3 children.
He is listed as being in 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards.

the family verbal history is that he served in Boer war and WW1. one of his sons has the name Belmont....a boer war battle and a medal from this was handed down along with WW1 medals.

the family seek to find what he was actually awarded, where served....any military history.

many thanks .

Family History Beginners Board / Clara and Catherine Gunner WW1 nurses possibly
« on: Thursday 06 August 20 15:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,
Long time since last sought help.

I am seeking help trying to trace Clara and/or Catherine Clapp, who were daughters of Frank Gunner and Olive (Edwards) ..Franks' first marriage.
By 1902 Frank had remarried and the girls disappeared.
However, family history/myth indicates that Frank's son, Alfred visited Holland to see graves.
The story is that the girls were or involved in nursing during WW1.

Any help you can give to solve or advance this enquiry would be greatly appreciated.

Dorset / Jack Rattenbury family
« on: Monday 12 December 11 14:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I hope some helpful soul can assist me.
I have a Rattenbury in my family (late 1700's early 1800's) in the Devon area and wondered if "my" Rattenbury might be associated with the famous smuggler, Jack.
So the question is this; what is known of Jacks ancestry and or his children?
I understand that his father was on a man-o-war by the time Jack was born, but did Jacks father have other children or perhaps brothers (uncles to Jack)

My reason for the enquiry is NOT so that i can say I'm related to someone famous but in order to try and take my Rattenbury line further back in time

My Rattenbury is/was Joseph born around 1791 and married to a Mary Wingett
If Jacks family is to difficult then perhaps Joseph ancestry can be found.

World War One / military records
« on: Wednesday 16 November 11 17:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I hope someone can help with what might seem to be a silly question.

I have been adviced to subscribe to the site Ancestry.co. UK in order to find and then look at the military records and medal awards (WW1) of relatives, but i do not seem to get a straight answer from the site or other about the following:
If i subscribe how much info do i get to see/down load of the family members military info
I hope to find medal awards, promotions, postings, woundings etc (the more info the better)

Durham / Davison family from Houghton Le Spring and further
« on: Wednesday 16 November 11 16:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I hope some kind soul can help me with what is becoming a rather big headache.

I am seeking help with trying to find some of my wife's family and the very numerous cousins that no doubt exist.
The problem is that the name is very common in the area and it is proving difficult to sort out all the false leads and red herrings.
Info so far;
Cook Davison b.1825 married to Elizab' Kettle b.1826 in Oct 1851
Issue;
John b.1855,  Edward b.1856,  Valintine b.1858,  Ann b. 1860,  James b.1862,  Elizab' b.1863,  Cook b.1865,  Robert b. 1867  (no help need with Robert at this time unless it involves WW1 service details)

I can find most of the family up to the 1881 census with a degree of certainty, but would like to find further in respect of; who married who, where and when and if they had issues.  If the issue had family this would be a bonus.

Cook snr & Elizabeth seemed to have all the children in Houghton Le Spring except Robert
Finally i can't seem to find Cook & Elizabeths' burials.

I know this is a lot to ask, but my ability/experience to sort out all the confusing stuff is limited.

Many thanks to ALL.

Norfolk / Robert Flood from Ashil/Sparham area c1775
« on: Friday 11 November 11 12:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I hope some help can be given with another branch of my family.

My ancestor Robert Flood married a Phebe Leech 20 March 1800 in Ashill
a census indicates that Robert was from Sparham (entry looks like this) and Phebe from Fransham
Roberts birth is abt 1775 and Phebe abt 1779.
There was issue:
James died as infant b. May 1801 d. Aug 1802
James born 1803  died in old age
and two girls, Mary and Sarah.

My hope is to discover something more about Robert OR Phebe,  where, when born, to whom, something of their ancestry.
