Technical Help / Getting rid of an email address
« on: Monday 03 July 17 13:59 BST (UK)  »
I'm sure one of you clever people will know how to resign from or completely block an email address.  This account was used years ago but I decided to have a new one for various reasons.  The old account receives numerous emails a day mostly of the 'do you want Russian girls, drugs or I have millions of pounds to give you' type. I keep on deleting them but its very tedious and I am unable to see how to delete it.
Many thanks

Hi you clever people can anyone fix this photo which I believe is the only known photo of Edmund, my husband's Grandfather.

many thanks

World War One / Royal Horse Guards - Trooper
« on: Wednesday 21 January 15 15:02 GMT (UK)  »
I have just inherited a picture of Charles Edward Colsell a Trooper in the Royal Horse Guards who was killed in France and remembered on the Loos Memorial.  The picture has always been known as Teds picture (he was known as Ted not Charles in the family) BUT the picture shows two stripes on his left arm ?corporals stripes.  My query is does a trooper wear stripes on his arm? If he had been promoted wouldn't the war memorial reflect this.  Have we been wrong in thinking this is Trooper Colsell. The picture is very dark and its difficult to make out the features of his face.

Please could some clever person smarten up Joseph and Emily Woodbridge.  Many thanks

Canada Lookup Request / Norman Clifford Rayner Again!
« on: Friday 21 September 12 10:58 BST (UK)  »
Yet again I am looking for information re Uncle Norman.  Previously I learnt that he was frequently crossing the Atlantic.  On investigation I discovered that he was a Valet working for an Art dealer, George Colin Agnew, who was crossing the Atlantic presumably collecting art who was always travelled accompanied by a Valet.

The interesting crossing comes in 1935 when Norman is accompanied by a wife Martha, they intend to settle in Canada. His occupation is given as an Art Dealer and his age as 37,  as he was born in 1902 I think he was nearer 33!  Martha was 39 and born in Kincardine Scotland.  She had lived at 3456 Ontario Avenue Montreal from July 1922 to September 1930 in the home of the Cowan family. This address was also given as the couples destination in Canada on their entry form. The entry form listed his next of kin as his father and she also gave his father as next of kin, so no clue as to her maiden name.

Is there a census where I could find her maiden name, can anyone find a marriage in Canada, Scotland or England for the couple, I have been unable to find one. Was she a home child?  Where did they go from Montreal?  Family stories say Norman died in a boiler explosion can anyone find evidence of his death?

Not much to go on I'm afraid but any help much appreciated.

The Lighter Side / I need a hug!!
« on: Saturday 02 January 10 19:48 GMT (UK)  »
OK I took my tree off GR as I was concerned that if the site went down all my research would be lost. I downloaded my tree to my own site and backed it up to a CD.  No problem! BUT the computer developed a fault and our local Mr Fixit said he needed to wipe the computer and reload was there anything that needed backing up so he put some holiday snaps onto a stick I said the family tree was already backed up! Was it was it **** when we reloaded the programme and then tried to put the CD back on,  the CD was blank!! OK I do have all my research but its on paper in 2 very large files which I am going to have to wade through and re put onto my tree! The moral of the story is check your backups before you let anyone delete your files.  I've had a large G&T and some wine so feeling slightly less suicidal now but thank goodness its winter so I have more time to sort this out.  BE WARNED!!

Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / Bates 1891 lookup Thame Oxon
« on: Saturday 14 February 09 17:01 GMT (UK)  »
Please could someone lookup George Thomas Bates in the 1891 census for me.
George should be about 30 years old living in Thame and by profession a brickmaker.  Living with him should be his sons, Charles aged about 10 and Albert aged about 8, there should also be another son Thomas aged about 2 years.   His wife could be Jane but she may have died by then, but  he did remarry to an Elizabeth!

I have the 1901 census but I'm confused about which wife was the mother of Thomas I hope the 1891 will shed some light on the subject.

Many thanks
