Australia / Birth of William J STEADWOOD South Australia or NSW
« on: Monday 17 June 13 17:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi.

I've found the death of this poor little chap in Sydney NSW in 1868, he died aged 14 months and was buried in Balmain Cemetery. His mother's name was Jane, no father's name given. This is the first positive evidence I have for people with my surname in Australia in the 19th century. I think my great great grandfather John Steadwood may have been born in Boston, SA but I just don't know. So, could someone have a look for the birth of William and whether there is any more information on either him or his mother.

Many thanks

Canada / Strange journey
« on: Monday 02 January 12 23:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have a great aunt who went to Canada in 1948 wshe was 12 and travelled alone aboard the Aquitania. There is no one of that generation left in my family to ask - she later must have returned to the UK as she married and had several children, eventually dying a couple of years ago in Scotland.

Anyone have any thoughts or theories about what the purpose of the journey was (I know of no relatives in Canada on that side of my tree), whether there was some scheme I don't know about - her parents were both still alive at that point - for travel or anything? I've been puzzling over this for a year or so and have run out of ideas!!

Thanks

Surrey Lookup Requests / Richard J Vey b. Kingston Dec 1917
« on: Wednesday 23 February 11 21:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

Does anyone have any information regarding Richard J Vey b. Dec 1917 in Kingston? I can't find a marriage or death for him although I know he was married - just don't know when! I've posted elsewhere regarding his wartime service, he claimed to have fought in the Battle of Britain but there's no record of that either. If anyone can find anything on him, I'd be very grateful

Thanks

World War Two / Seeking a pilot of 42 Squadron
« on: Monday 21 February 11 16:59 GMT (UK)  »
Dear all

My step father in law had an uncle called (variously) Richard (or Dickie) Vey, De Vey, Irons or Dumphy. These are names that he apparently used at various times in his life - its complicated!! Family story has it that he flew with 42 Squadron out of Biggin Hill in Hurricanes, was then posted to Hornchurch and eventually ended up in Maidstone. However, neither of us have been able to find any reference to him anywhere and the chap disappeared some years ago so we can't ask him direct. He claimed to have 9 "kills" in the Battle of Britain - which you would think worthy of note - but nothing. I've checked some of the online lists of those who flew in the BoB, tried (and failed) to find lists of pilots with 42 Sqdn in the early years of the war.

Can anyone help or suggest other places to look? We have tried to obtain his service records but were told that they were not available.

Thanks

Ayrshire / Blair in Kilbirnie Old Kirkyard
« on: Saturday 08 January 11 11:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

My wife's several times great-grandfather was James Blair who died in (we think) 1729 and was apparently buried  in Kilbirnie Old Kirkyard. According to my wife's grandfather (now sadly deceased) there was a stone but we were unable to find it during a flying visit a couple of years ago. There were quite a few stones that were totally illegible due to moss but we didn't want to start scraping and possibly causing more damage.

Does anyone have any information or knowledge of this burial or of James Blair of Kilbirnie?

Many thanks

Technical Help / CD/DVD recovery software
« on: Saturday 04 December 10 11:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

Can anyone recommend a good free CD/DVD recovery programme? I've got various family history data discs that are getting difficult to read as well as music CDs and DVDs that my children have "improved" with youghurt then washed and cleaned for me!!

I know it won't be possible to recover all of them as some of the damage looks pretty terminal but it would be good to be able to back-up those that I can. I already have DVD backup software but it doesn't feature any recovery algorithms.

Thanks

The Lighter Side / Where else do you look?
« on: Tuesday 30 November 10 16:40 GMT (UK)  »
Dear all

Before I was introduced to Rootschat, I used (and still do) a vraiety of other sites when trying to uncover my elusive ancestors. These included A******y, GenesReunited, findmypast, electricscotland, rampant scotland, highland and borders family history site... the list goes on.

However, I didn't use many sites where everyone was as helpful and giving as this one. What other sites do you all use and how friendly are they? It might be that there will be those elsewhere who can fill in those missing pieces of our respective jigsaw!!
