Australia / Miscarriages and Stillborn at the turn of the century
« on: Wednesday 11 January 23 03:29 GMT (UK)  »
I am asking the hive mind as I haven't been able to turn up a birth/death certificate for the child that was born/miscarried and died, and then subsequently my great grandmother died. And this was 1908 in Broken Hill, NSW.

I am wondering at what stage in the pregnancy would a death not be recorded? Would there have been a cut off period......say 6 months?

Many thanks in advance.

I am searching for information on James Brocklebank.

He was born in June 1864 in the fabulously named Carkettle in Lancashire and christened on 4 September 1864 in Dalton in Furness, Lancashire.
In the 1881 Census he was listed as an iron miner living with several family members in Pennington in Ulverston, Lancashire.
On the 21 April 1884, aged 20, he headed to the USA, landing in New York. He was listed as a sailor aboard SS Oregon.
In 1900 he is listed as a boarder and a Gold Ore miner in District 85, Imogene, Ouray County, Colorado.
These are the words from the 1900 census "Brocklebank, James, boarder, b. Apr 1864, 36, single, b. England, parents b. England, immigrated 1884, in US 16 yrs, papers filed, miner, gold ore, can read, write, and speak English.".

And that is all I have.......would love to know if he married, moved around in America, held down other jobs and when he died.

Many thanks in advance.

Australia / South Australia Marriage Lookup - Amelia Elizabeth WILLIAMS
« on: Tuesday 19 March 19 19:06 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to solve the mystery of Amelia Elizabeth's first husband, James, and I can't seem to find his death anywhere. The last two clues I had hoped might be him were debunked yesterday.

His wife Amelia Elizabeth remarried some 5 years after they were first married, and her second marriage was to Henry Edwin Hopkins in 1890. The certificate number is 165/136.

Can someone tell me if she marries as a widow?

I have found a South Australian police report from 1889 regarding his desertion, but to me that wouldn't have given her time to get divorced.

The only place I haven't been able to search around the relevant time period is Northern Territory.

Many thanks in advance,

Australia / Josephine Ruane Death
« on: Thursday 25 January 18 21:14 GMT (UK)  »
Morning,

I have been asked to find a friend's grandmothers death that has puzzled the family for decades.

What do I know about her?

Her name was Josephine RUANE and she was born was born in 1883 to MATHEW and MARIA in LISMORE   (NSW BDM Cert 29583/1883 )

She got married in 1906 to John G GIESE  in CASINO (NSW BDM Cert. 6910/1906 )

Josephine and John had multiple children..........and then she disappears......well at least from NSW records.

I can't locate a remarriage, a death or a cemetery record, and Ancestry is not very forthcoming either!

Not sure if she travelled over the border and is hidden in the QLD or other records........but I would love to get a death date and hopefully cemetery location for Josephine.

Cheers

Hi,

This is the only photo our family has of William Shepherd with his wife Julia, and I am hoping someone, with better photo restoration skills than I have, is able to restore it.

Cheers

Australia / O'Donnell, William
« on: Monday 16 May 16 03:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone.

I am stumped. I have an ancestor of hubby's that I am tracing. He is William O'Donnell or McDonald or McDonnell.
I have a tentative birthday (from a fellow genie) of 1736, which doesn't gel with his death record in 1838 which lists his age as being in his 80's.
He came out on the Suprize (which sailed in 1790) according to the Muster records, but I can't find him listed in any of the documents I have found and was freed by his length of servitude so I suspect he was sentenced to life.
He was also granted land in the Hunter Area, around Hinton.
I can glean lots of information about his life in the Hunter........who he married, the kids, the land deeds, his argument with a fellow land owner etc.

What is stumping me is his transportation, his sentence, his crime, his arrival etc.

Any clues???

Cheers

Europe / Danish Birth Lookup Hans Peter Marteen PHILIPP born 1857
« on: Sunday 24 January 16 02:15 GMT (UK)  »
I have been asked, by a friend who has a Great Grandfather who was born in Denmark, to see if I can locate his parents. He had moved to Australia by 1899 and was living in Waratah, Tasmania.

The information I have is
Hans Peter Marteen PHILIPP (variously spelled as Martine/Martin, and PHILLIPP/PHILLIPPE and other variations) and he was born in Denmark in 1857.

I have no idea where to start and I don't speak Danish.

Can anyone either point me in the right direction, or do a lookup for me please.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Cheers

Australia / HUTTON, John
« on: Thursday 07 July 11 03:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Long time since I have been here! :D
I am stumped.......can't find my granddad (and yes, he is dead) in the NSW Electoral rolls around 1911-1915 prior to him going off to war.

His full name was John Thomas Hutton (not the Inverell John Thomas who is his father) and he was also known as Jack.

He was a jockey so probably lived around Randwick and I believe he was living with Hilda Louise Williams.

Would love to solve this one.

Thanks

Siouxsie
