Would really appreciate the crease removing and image sharpening on this photograph of my lovely Nan, Hilda Jane, taken in 1916.

Many thanks

The Common Room / Inquest records, Monmouthshire (Abergavenny disrict) 1932
« on: Friday 07 March 14 19:26 GMT (UK)  »
Not sure if I'm posting this query on the correct board.

I'm trying to locate a coroner's inquest record from 1932. The death certificate states the inquest was carried out in Monmouthshire, Abergavenny district, in November 1932.

Gwent archives only appear to hold inquest records up to 1883, so I'm not sure where I might find any information.

Would there be a public disclosure on them?

Is there also any information I could obtain as to the sentencing of the person who caused the death? The trial verdict was manslaughter but I would be interested to find out if I could find  where the sentence was served etc.

Any advice would be very welcome.

Regards

Trish

The Common Room / Probate 12 years after death
« on: Wednesday 11 April 12 20:54 BST (UK)  »
Please could someone help explain probate, 12 years after date of death. My G G Grandfather was an innkeeper, who died in 1884. His wife took over the licence of the inn on his death until she died in Dec 1895. The licence was then transferred to their son in Feb 1896.

I have just discovered a probate document on A***stry* website, dated 23 March 1896, London, to George Williams, Shoemaker, effects £40 4s 9d.

I have no idea who George Williams is. Is it likely that he would have held the freehold to the inn and that is the reason he was granted probate?

If anybody can enlighten me, it would be much appreciated.

The Common Room / Private baptism ceremony
« on: Friday 30 March 12 21:24 BST (UK)  »
Just wondering if anyone could explain the reason for a 'Private Baptism'.

I have found the baptism in Parish records, dated May17th 1898, of twins. In the margin of the Parish Register is written 'Private' at the sides of both entries. Sadly, both children died in the September of that year & I am curious as to the circumstances which would enable this type of baptism.

The Common Room / Change of name?
« on: Tuesday 12 October 10 19:34 BST (UK)  »
I am just pondering what the legality was on changing a name.

Around about 1910, if a child who's mother had died, was taken in by a family & brought up by them, could they change her birth name without doing so legally? If she eventually married & was known by the family name, what name would she have to declare on her marriage certificate? I believe formal adoption was not introduced until 1927, so would welcome any suggestions.

United States of America / Margaret Carroll-emigration to USA
« on: Friday 17 September 10 21:50 BST (UK)  »
Just hoping that some kind soul may be able to help.

I am looking for any details of the emigration and life in USA of Margaret Mary Carrol, who emigratedl to Pennsylvania between 1877 & 1880.

She was born abt 1864 & lived in Glamorganshire/Monmouthshire, Wales.  She married Daniel J Sheedy
( born Massachusetts) in the USA possibly around1883. I have found her on the 1910,1920 & 1930 US Census, living in Butler, PA. I note from one of these census returns she gives her naturalization date as 1882. Her place of birth is also listed as Ireland rather than Wales on some of the census returns.

If anyone can give me any further information, no matter how small, I would appreciate it.
