Scotland / Lost McDonalds - Found
« on: Thursday 23 February 06 21:33 GMT (UK)  »
Looking to find this family on 41 or 51 census.   I have tried FREECEN for 1841 and the Dumfries ‘51 census with no luck.   They are all either in the Leadhills/Crawford area or somewhere else in Lanarkshire; Carsphairn in Kirkcudbrighshire or Patna/Dalmellington Ayrshire or they could be anywhere along the Lanarks/Ayrshire/Dumfries borders.   They were in Dalmellington by 1854.    All the children were born Crawford/Leadhills; but where were they between the birth of George in 1837 and 1854?   Some of them, of course may have died, but there could also be children I have missed.   Joan Hope McDonald was my ggxgrandmother and I have her and some of her siblings well documented once they arrive in Dalmellington, as well as William’s senior’s ancestry.    I suspect William senior and Agnes may have died young as I have never found death certificates (searched SP) for either of them.  Hope someone can help.   Family listed below with ages in 1841.

William McDonald born Crawford/Leadhills  age 42
Agnes McDonald or Hislop born  Dumfries (?) age abt. 45
John   (20)
Isabelle  (18)
Thomas  (16)
Janet  (13)
William (11)
Joan Hope (7)
George (4)

Scotland / Help with reading signature
« on: Sunday 18 December 05 23:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hope someone can help with reading this surname.  James ???? is listed on my great-grandfather's death certificate as "brother-in-law", but as I know the names of all his brothers-in-law, I am assuming that he was actually the husband of a sister-in-law.   Knowing who he was, and then perhaps finding his wife would greatly assist in my fruitless search for the birthplace of my great-grandmother for whom I have no record previous to her marriage.

The death certificate is Peter McCormick, Coylton, 1893 and I would imagine this James is somewhere in the 30 - 60 age group.   Possible wife's surnames, Brown, Kerr, Logan, Thomson, McGregor (but could be anything).   Any ideas what this signature is or, even better, do you know who he was?

Scotland / Looking for Jane Brown born 1854/55
« on: Sunday 20 November 05 14:55 GMT (UK)  »
Searching for a birth record for my great-grandmother Jane or Jeannie Brown.  Her birth year should be 1855 from age on marriage cert in 1875 (Ochiltree) and various censuses. However, I cannot find her birth certificate and if she was born in 1855 there should be one!  Perhaps it was 1854 and she was not registered.   On her marriage certificate Jane gives her parents as James Brown and Mary Kerr  (presumably both still alive as not noted as deceased) - she is living as a domestic servant at Newton on Ayr.

The 1881 census gives her birthplace as Old Monkland; 1891 gives Coatbridge, but in 1901 she gives her birthplace as Sanquhar.   Jane's age is given as 47 on her death cert in 1903.  The witness was her son James, who gives her parents as ---Kerr (deceased) and ---Kerr (deceased), Mother's maiden name unknown.

Just to confuse matters, two of her nine children have the mother’s maiden name listed as Logan and another three have it listed as Thomson.   The others vary between Jane Kerr Brown, Jane Kerr and Jane Brown (sometimes Jeannie).   However, the husband’s name (Peter McCormick) and date of marriage are always correct.   Plus all the children in question are with them on the next census so its definitely her.

I have found a couple of marriages between a James Brown and Mary Kerr, but none of them seem to fit and they have not registered a Jane.   I have been unable to find her , or her parents on any censuses before her marriage.   I had high hopes when the 1861 census was released, but this too has shown no results, partly because Brown is such an ordinary name.   I have also worked on the assumption that she may have been born before the marriage and registered as Kerr, but no luck there either.

Any help or ideas appreciated - I have spent a fortune on SP!

Monaghan / McCormick born Monaghan
« on: Thursday 03 November 05 19:28 GMT (UK)  »
The Scottish 1861 census put on line last week has finally given me a clue to my ggxgrandather's birthplace.   The '41 and '51 just say Ireland, but 1861 gives Monaghan, Ireland.    Peter McCormick was born around 1792 and came to Scotland some time before 1822 when he married in Ayrshire.  His death certificate names his father as Peter McCormick also, no mother named but he named his eldest daughter Mary.   Other children's first names are Daniel, Janet, Isabella, Margaret, Elizabeth, James, Peter, Thomas, John.   Can anyone connect with this.

Canada Lookup Requests Completed / McCormick Scotland to Canada
« on: Saturday 02 July 05 19:11 BST (UK)  »
Looking for four McCormick brothers who may have emigrated to Canada (family rumour - cannot confirm).  Not sure of exact dates but probably sometime between 1905 and 1913.   They were all from Ayrshire but may have lived in Lanarkshire just prior to their departure.
They were:
James b. 1879 married to Mary Murray
Hugh b. 1881 married Catherine Park (daughter Mary Kerr Park McCormick b.1903)
John b. 1885
Thomas Slater Kerr MCormick b. 1895
Haven't a clue whereabouts they went and have searched several passenger lists without success.   May have changed their name to McCormack.

Ireland / McCormick
« on: Thursday 30 June 05 10:19 BST (UK)  »
Trying to find birth location/parents of my ggxgrandfather, Peter (sometimes Patrick) McCormick. The only early information I have is that he was born in Ireland around 1795 give or take a few years. He moved to Scotland sometime prior to his marriage  in Coylton, Ayrshire in 1822 and I have him and his children well documented from that date. His death certificate names his father also as Peter McCormick but no mother.
On the 1841 census, there is another Peter McCormick living nearby, also born Ireland about 1790, wife Bridget - I have a feeling that perhaps this was a cousin - this Peter’s parents, on his death cert,  are given as Ronald McCormick and Ann McAllister - does anyone recognise these names and perhaps be able to give a location in Ireland for them.
Family first names:  Daniel, Peter, Thomas, Mary, Isabella, Elizabeth, John, Hugh, Janet, Margaret.
Hope someone can help.
Trish
