The Common Room / Terms used to describe the work people did.
« on: Friday 25 March 16 06:15 GMT (UK)  »
I'm aware from censuses that the terms used to indicate the work people did were simple descriptives and, sometimes, give a false picture. e.g. a warehouseman could be a labouring storeman employee or the owner of an import business.
My 4 X great grandfather's sister's second husband was described in one doc. as a 'servant'. In another he was described as a 'Gentleman' with his Will indicating a man with several properties and other wealth. I cannot find who he was 'servant' to, and that isn't my query. Is it likely a servant could also be a gentleman?
Thanks in advance.

London and Middlesex / Eyeling, Middlesex
« on: Friday 04 April 14 07:34 BST (UK)  »
I have an old Will - 1748 - where Eyeling, Middlesex is mentioned. Where is this? I suppose it might be Ealing but as the family was from Stepney and surrounds this does not seem likely to me. [I'm not that familiar with London [Aussie]].
Does anyone have any ideas?

London and Middlesex / Pallott's Marriage Index: 1780-1837
« on: Thursday 23 August 12 03:19 BST (UK)  »
My query is about the above index - on the one in question the names and place are obvious but in the R. hand corner is a number - 16. Ancestry's info pre-index describes this as the 'Spouse comments'. Is it the wife's age? I thought this ancestor was older then 16.
Can anyone shed light on this?
Thanks in advance,
N.

Australia / birth registrations with extra comment
« on: Tuesday 10 April 12 08:43 BST (UK)  »
I have a birth registration that in the informant column includes the statement "After declaration made as by law requires". The usual info is give by the parent as informant. This is the  first time I have seen this added to the column. What does it mean and why is it there? Anyone any ideas?
Thanks,

London and Middlesex / Lovegrove
« on: Friday 10 February 12 10:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
William Lovegrove who lived St James, London, was born c. 1730. He died in 1777 and his Will reveals a nephew, Thomas Lovegrove, a brother John Lovegrove, as well as a niece Elizabeth Bond. I do not know where he was born. I know this is a long shot but would like to find which Lovegrove family he was part of.
Thanks,
n.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Trying again
« on: Saturday 28 January 12 04:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, can someone help with dating these Australian photos?
The pair must have been taken at the same time. The card is quite thick and the back is plain dark green like the mount. The gold writing says 'Imperial 103 Elizabeth Street Melbourne',
The other is a thin CDV, the back plain, the writing is Stewart & Co 217 & 219 Bourke St E Melbourne and the stamp is Leslie Copelan. Stewart operated between 1871 and 1900 and I'm wondering which end of this range it is close too?
thanks,
N.
The photos may not attach again. I have resaved, renamed, reattached and tried to resend but that hasn't worked either. Will try once more but give up after that.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Dating a photo please?
« on: Thursday 19 January 12 05:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Could some one date this photo? It was taken in Australia. The card is thin with the image stuck on. On the back is a simple pro forma design with the handwritten technical requirements almost unreadable and no identifying characteristics. Any ideas?
Thanks,
