Buckinghamshire / Water Eaton Road Bletchley 1939 General Register
« on: Sunday 21 February 21 09:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I wonder if anyone could help please. Via Google  :-\ I'm trying to identify (if it still exists) my father's and grandfather's house (family name Curtis) on Water Eaton Road from the 1939 General Register. The address given is Albionhurst but for this, and all the adjacent properties there are no numbers only house names. Does anyone know if these were houses which were built and named by the developer or local authority as was common in some areas? The entry listed next to theirs is "No 4 Estate House" which doesn't seem to help. Further down the entries is a Fairlight 10 Water Eaton Road but that doesn't seem to exist now, would that have been the other side of the railway and perhaps where Albionhurst was?

Many thanks

Terry

Gloucestershire / 55 St Michaels Hill, Bristol
« on: Wednesday 20 January 21 11:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

Would anybody know what happened to the houses at 55 - 59 St Michaels Hill Bristol please? There is just an empty space there now (according to Google.)  Bombed during the war perhaps?  My family (Avery - Confectioner) lived at 55 during the 1840-1870 period. Of course any old street photos would be very helpful if anyone has any, or can recommend a source for any.

Thank you

Terry

Census and Resource Discussion / Ancestry Shoebox
« on: Thursday 18 November 10 08:01 GMT (UK)  »
Has anyone else lost some or all of their "Shoebox" items on Ancestry?  I only have limited access to some of my records. It shows the total number of records but I can't access them. Ancestry say it's an ongoing problem which they don't know if or when they'll fix it - they won't even say if it's my account or more general. "Helpful" as usual.

Thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Brooklyn Street 1900 Census
« on: Tuesday 10 August 10 18:43 BST (UK)  »
Could anyone take a guess or know of the street attached please?  It's from the 1900 US Census for Brooklyn, enumeration district 414.

EDIT:  I think it might be Herkimer Street - the family lived in Herkimer Place in 1905 - but I'd like a second opinion!

Thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Quinlan or Qunilan or ?
« on: Wednesday 21 July 10 09:08 BST (UK)  »
Please could anyone give their opinion on the bride's mother's name on the attached. I have no other clues i.e. similar names in the research so far so am struggling. The IGI has it as Julia Quinlan.

Thanks

Midlothian / Maconochie - Kirknewton
« on: Friday 26 March 10 17:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I've had some success in researching the Maconochie (Welwood) line and have from various sources (ElectricScotland, Edinburgh University Libraries and a living relative) determined the marriage of Allan Maconochie to Elizabeth Welwood in 1774 but I am unable to confirm anything further back on the Maconochie line. I wonder if anyone could add to this somewhat rather sketchy information I already have?

I have, in order of descendancy:

Dougall Campbell

James Maconochie (b?) m Jean Anderson

Alexander Maconochie m (Isabella ?) OR William Maconochie b 1717 m Isabel Allan

Allan Maconochie b 1748 m Elizabeth Welwood 1774

And after this point to the present time.

There is some ambiguity with Allan Maconochie's father (William or Alexander)

Many thanks

US Lookup Requests / Manhattan Marriage Help Please
« on: Thursday 25 February 10 17:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I wonder if anyone could please add any more to a marriage I've found on the IGI: Eva Maud Avery (b India, father Alfred Avery) to Richard Grace 26 Jan 1878, Manhattan. I've also found it on the Italian Genealogy Group as well (but no groom's name there.)  I hope that the bride is Evangeline Maud Avery b Poona 1856 father Alfred O Avery (but his wife was Lavinia and not Julia as the IGI record shows - but who knows - he was a rogue!)

Thanks

Dumfriesshire / McKie's of Dumfries
« on: Thursday 11 February 10 19:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

I'm struggling to find records for a Mary McKie daughter of a James McKie of Dumfries - she married a Louis Henry Mayers Avery (possibly in Australia) on 24 June 1900. I only know this from "Who's Who in Australia 1935.

She may have been related (sister) to an Amelia Denholm McKie who does appear on the 1901 Scotland Census (via Ancestry UK) as a daughter of a James McKie b 1872 Maxwelltown. My reason for thinking this is that in 1934 Louis Avery is shown travelling alone to the UK and his address on the incoming passenger is given as c/o Bowie Architect Dumfries.  I've looked for this architect and found on Scottisharchitects.org that a John McKlintock Bowie married Amelia Denholm McKie in 1901 - hence my connection.

I can't find an Amelia Denholm McKie on the 1891 census b Maxwelltown only an Amelia McKie b Troqueer in 1872 so I suppose this might be the same family - the paernts names and ages tie in as does one son Roger. However there is is no daughter Mary.

That's as far as I can get - could anyone help please?

Thanks

Kent / Emily Curtis - Wateringbury
« on: Friday 05 February 10 16:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

I have an interest in an Emily Curtis - Professor of Music and Singing who appears on the 1871 census for Liverpool sub registration district Islington - parish Christchurch. She is shown as a widow aged 30 b Wateringbury abt 1841. I can find no record of her either before or after that census. I have assumed she retained her married name but have also looked for all marriages of Emily's born 1841 +/-  a few years to a Curtis but with no success. There are no births of an Emily Curtis that I can find that would fit for the Malling district.  So I'm looking for some inspiration!

My other hope is that her qualification (assuming it's accurate) must have been awarded by some recognized music institution sometime around 1860-1870 - does anyone have any ideas where to start - or other leads?

My interest stems from the fact that at the same address in Liverpool was my gg grandfather Alfred Avery and his daughter Maud- our family name later changed to Curtis and this is the only "connection" I've ever found.......

Thanks

Terry
