WW1 In Memoriam / 9th April 1917, William T McRae, 19, 4th Btn Gordon Highlanders
« on: Monday 04 August 14 17:02 BST (UK)  »
William Turner McRae was born on 13 October 1897 in Culsalmond, Aberdeenshire to Farquhar and Isabella McRae and was a younger brother of Ewan McRae. William was killed in action during the Battle of Arras just 12 days before his brother. This must have been such a devastating time for his parents who had already lost 3 children to childhood illnesses.
William is remembered with honour at Tilloy British Cemetery, Tilloy- Les- Mofflaines in France.
The photograph attached was taken from the MacRae Roll of Honour and though poor, is the only image that we have of him.

The eldest of 7 children, my great uncle Ewan was born on 30 December 1891 in Coull, Aberdeenshire to Farquhar and Isabella McRae. For reasons unknown, he served under an alias - John Campbell - and enlisted in London. The Commonwealth War Graves entry states that for John Campbell see McRae the true family name. He is mentioned in the book "With a Highland Regiment in Mesopotamia" as being one of four killed on 21 April 1917.
He is remembered with honour at Basra Memorial.
The photograph of him as a baby is the only one that we have of him.

Hi,

I can make out everything except where the baptism took place, can anyone help? I'm not familiar with the area and am hoping that someone may recognise the name as the nearest I've found is Aultachruine. Thank you.

Hi,

I'd be grateful if the creases could be removed from this photo of me when I was 4 or 5 years old. If anyone would like to have a go at colouring as well then feel free  :) My hair was dark brown and eyes the same...can't remember the colours in the dress  :) Thank you

Hi,
This is all that's left of a photo of my mum, dad and a young Hughie Green...she sang on Opportunity Knocks in 1950 when it was still being broadcast on the radio. She's deeply disappointed that this is all that remains so any help would be really appreciated  :)
