Sussex / Looking for Eliza/Elise JONES d.6 March 1939, Bexhill
« on: Friday 26 July 19 00:57 BST (UK)  »
We do not need any information about OLIVER family.  Just trying to track Eliza JONES (family story says she was "Elise" but records so far point to Eliza).

Eliza JONES married Charles Thomas OLIVER 31 October 1922 at the Register's Office - 2B/140 (have certificate):

Charles =  Bachelor
Aged 21 years
Hotel Porter
Address = Sackville Hotel, Bexhill
Father = Walter OLIVER
Hotel Porter

Eliza = Spinster
Aged 23 years
Hotel Chambermaid
Sackville Hotel, Bexhill
Father = William Thomas JONES
Iron Works Furnaceman

Witnesses: Arthur Edw & Daisy OLIVER (brother and sister of groom)

Eliza & Chas had three children (all deceased):
Gwendoline Vera (died NZ) - she was 15/16 when her mother died - none of her children can provide any more information
June Rosemary (died UK) - only child can’t provide more information
Dudley (probably Dudley Charles) (drowned Montrose, Scotland, c.20 July 1949. AC RAF #63 Maintenance Unit).

Eliza died 6 March 1939 i.e. before the 1939 Register was compiled (have death certificate, sorry don't have access to the number at the moment)
aged 39
Address = 51 Buxton Drive, Bexhill MD
Wife of Charles Thomas OLIVER, gardener
Present at death at same address
Death registered 7 March

Is anyone able to help with Eliza please?
Thanks, gladyseva

Sussex / Dudley C OLIVER, deceased
« on: Wednesday 13 September 17 05:36 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help my friend with details of her late uncle please.
Dudley C OLIVER, b. Sept 1/4 1930 Battle, Sussex, maiden name JONES.

Believe he is showing at Bexhill on 1939 register with birth year of 1903 (typo?) in index with his father, Charles OLIVER and 2 others blocked (2 sisters, both now deceased).  Mother had died earlier in 1939 (we have her death details) and so does not show on register.

Family story is that he drowned while in the Air Force at the age of 18 - possibly Hastings.

Can't find anything about his life nor his death, can you help please?
thanks, gladyseva

Devon Completed Lookup Requests / Royal Oak Pub, Exminster COMPLETED THANK YOU
« on: Tuesday 10 May 11 05:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

Can anyone tell me please if the Royal Oak pub which suffered a fire in March 2009 would have been the same building as "Royal Oak" in the 1841 census - publican Mary Tapp?

And after the fire, was the building demolished or restored?

thanks, gladyseva

New Zealand Completed Requests / Wanganui Place Name - 1880
« on: Friday 23 July 10 09:08 BST (UK)  »
The attached image follows a witness signature on an 1880 marriage registration at St Paul's Manse, Wanganui.

Is there anyone with local knowledge who can tell me what it says please?  Maybe a suburb, the name of a house...

cheers

New Zealand Completed Requests / ITM Lookup please COMPLETED THANK YOU
« on: Saturday 05 June 10 22:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi again

In April Riley kindly found an ITM for me - another was elusive because I didn't have enough details.

I now have the marriage registration and would appreciate a lookup if someone can help out please:

William Peter NELSON and Eliza JOHNSON (widow) married Registrar's Office, Wellington 2 March 1893.

Cheers and thanks, gladyseva

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / John Jewell HOWARD is lost
« on: Monday 24 May 10 19:17 BST (UK)  »
He was born Portsmouth and is said to have emigrated to Australia in 1848.  His parents were John HOWARD (who was a Tailor) and Mary JEWELL. The following family details are from IGI:

Mary Jewell HAWARD baptised 8 March 1826,
John Jewell HOWARD baptised 28 October 1827,
Edward HARWARD baptised 29 September 1833, and
Clara HAWARD baptised 5 July 1835 and buried 9 August 1835; all at St Thomas, Portsmouth, Hampshire.

I have tried to find the family on the 1841 Census without any luck.  But I have found the HAYWARD family at 2 King St, Portsmouth, Parish of Portsea HO107/414/3; minus mother Mary and plus Eliza 24, George 12, Charles 3 and Eliza 18 months.  The father is a Tailor.

There is a marriage at St Mary's Portsea in July 1837 between a John HAWARD and Eliza BUTLER which could be the link, but can't find a death for mother Mary.

So can anyone help find a better fit family on the Census - or if you think this is the correct lot, can you find Mary's death/burial?

Thanks, gladyseva

Australia / Melbourne marriage and settlement
« on: Friday 14 May 10 23:18 BST (UK)  »
I have the register copy of marriage by licence for John HOWARD and Mary Ann CARTER, St Peter's, Melbourne 11 Nov 1852.

I have birth registration of daughter Eliza HOWARD b. 14 July 1860 at Sandy Creek, Inglewood giving parents' birthplaces as Portsmouth (father) and Camberwell (mother) - there are 5 living children at that time.

Both John's baptism in Portsmouth and death in NZ are as: John Jewell Howard.

I have obit from NZ newspaper saying John arrived Melbourne in 1848 after 115 day voyage on "Indian Queen"; then to Christchurch NZ 1864.  However I can't find proof that "Indian Queen" sailed that year and can't isolate him on other passenger lists.

Would the marriage licence give more details of when both John HOWARD and Mary Ann CARTER arrived in Australia? - if so, is it available and where?  Any other suggestions or new set of eyes to look at passenger lists?

Thanks, gladyseva

New Zealand Completed Requests / I T M Look up please. COMPLETED THANK YOU
« on: Wednesday 14 April 10 08:05 BST (UK)  »
I'd be grateful if  someone going to Wellington archives would be kind enough to do a couple of ITM look ups for me please.

William James JOHNSTON m. Eliza HOWARD at St Paul's Manse in Wanganui 3 May 1880.  He was 20 so I'm hoping there'll be some parental authority quoted.  Also with a bit of luck, the time each of them had been in NZ/Wanganui.

Eliza subsequently re-married.  BDM lists her surname as JOHNSON (no 't').  She married William Peter NELSON on 2 March 1893.

Her first marriage cert is not endorsed as divorced and so I'm assuming he died (he certainly 'disappeared' quite quickly after marriage).  I'm hoping some proof of widowhood shows on the 2nd ITM to help me isolate a death registration.
Thanks, Gladyseva

Nottinghamshire / Snenton vs Sneinton
« on: Thursday 25 March 10 07:05 GMT (UK)  »
Is Snenton (near the Trent River and Carlton and Lenton) the same place as Sneinton?

Snenton spelling is used on IGI (and an Alvey website).  Sneinton spelling is from Genuki.

Thanks.
