I need to like to find out if there was a death notice/obituary for a person (they may be a close relative but I need more information).

Their death was registered 1974 in the Claro Registration District.
There is no corresponding probate record to give a clue as to where in Claro the person lived.
I don't have the death certificate - if I need to I will get it in the future, funds allowing.
The British Newspaper Archive does not seem to cover that period/area - please tell me if I'm wrong.

I'm not familiar with the Yorkshire districts. I looked up where Claro is, and was thinking if someones death was registered in the Claro area, and there was a death notice, it must have been in a Harrogate newspaper. I've been looking what archives and library is in Harrogate to try to see what 1970's newspapers they have that had family notices. I couldn't find anything on their website, so was going to email them...
But from what I've just read on Rootschat about Claro reg dist, it includes many different towns, that probably had their own newspapers?

Please can anyone tell me, were there any newspapers that had family notices/obituaries, that covered the entire Claro area?
For the period to cover 1974?

Do you know if/where there is public access to it?

I'm not at all local, so sadly I can't pop into all the libraries and trawl through everything they have to offer for that period. (If I need to visit it would need to be targeted to one location and short time period)

All info and suggestions welcome! Thank you.

The Common Room / Images of documents from auction sites
« on: Sunday 16 October 22 20:04 BST (UK)  »
I saved some images of 1700/1800's documents that were on an online auction site. They have lots of residents names. I wasn't able to buy the documents. I do think it's a pity they weren't in archives.

Where do I stand on being able to share the images online for other people to see?
Some people may think it's unfair (to the owners of the documents), others may think it's a good idea...
but where would I stand (legally?) on sharing photos that someone else took? So they can be seen publicly by people wanting to research. Is it allowed?

Thanks

Hi

I inherited some photos including one of an unnamed solider. I've actually found that he is wearing c1918 RAF uniform.
I'm looking for any clues that might help identify him.

The back of the photo is a K Ltd post card with no photographers name or address.

There is an embossed stamp, which I'm really struggling to read or research what it says. The first part looks like Gyde. There were apparently a few photographers with that name but the second part of the stamp doesn't seem to fit in with any of them.

Please can anyone read the stamp? I'd be great to see another photo with the same stamp to compare with mine because I think that might be the only way to read it.

First I scanned the photo at high res. The embossed stamp hardly shows up. Then I photographed it with a torch shining across the photo from different angles. I'll post more of my attempts at photographing it below.

Thanks,
Angelfish

Armed Forces / Help with 1940's service record please?
« on: Tuesday 24 August 21 02:01 BST (UK)  »
Hello

This RAF service belongs to a lady who will be 90 this year :) , it is about her family member (who is deceased).  I'm trying to find out what it all means for her, as she's never known how to.

I've looked up acronyms and meanings but there is so much I still can't find or even read the handwriting.

I would be really grateful if anyone can help me please?  I've added a scan of part of the record below, and also my attempt so far. Please let me know if there is a better way for me to share this data to make it easier. Would it be beneficial to share the whole record. Thank you

Northumberland / Axwell Park School, Blaydon
« on: Sunday 11 July 21 14:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi

The 1939 Register shows that my relative was an 'inmate' at Axwell Park School, Blaydon on Tyne. He would have been 11 years old.
His parents were living in Byker, with his 15 year old brother. His 7 year old sister was also living away, in Durham RD but the street details are still closed.

I read about Axwell Park School on the Children's Homes website. It became an Approved School in 1933.  http://www.childrenshomes.org.uk/NewcastleAxwell/

Does anyone know if the Axwell Park in 1939 would have still been only for children 'in trouble' or at risk, or would it have taken regular pupils from Byker as well. I'd like to find out why he was there, and as much as I can.

I was told he later joined the Army, when he was on 17 but thats 3rd hand information.

Thanks

Caernarvonshire / Smithfield, Caernarvon
« on: Tuesday 29 June 21 12:10 BST (UK)  »
Please can anyone help me with the location of Smithfield, Carnarvon?

I've tried search engines and looking at old maps. I tried google translate into Welsh - Caeau Gofaint (apologies if that is wrong!) in case that was on maps.

My WILLIAMS family lived on Chapel Street, but some records says Smithfield. I'm trying to work out if Chapel Street and Smithfield was the same place - if these records are for the same family or not...

1827, 1830, 1831, 1832, 1835. Children baptised to John and Ellin WILLIAMS all give residence as Carnarvon. No street name was included.

1838. Baptised St Peblig’s Church, Llanbeblig. Jane d/o John and Ellin WILLIAMS. Of Smithfield Caernarvon. Occupation: Mariner.

1841 census. Chapel Street, Caernarvon. John WILLIAMS and wife Ellin, children John, Gwen, Owen and Jane.

1847. Buried St Peblig’s Church, Llanbeblig. Ellin WILLIAMS of Smithfield, Carnarvon. Aged 57.

1851 census 6 Chapel Street, Caernarvon. John WILLIAMS Head. 50. Widower. Mariner. Bn Bryn Bwlach, Merionethshire.

1853 marriage of daughter. Of Chapel Street Caernarvon

1871 census ?? 15 Chapel Street, Llanbeblig. John WILLIAMS. Married. 73. Mariner. Bn Merionethshire Wales. Living with wife Ellen, 77, Bn Llanbeblig??

Please can anyone help, I can't find the marriage of

Winifred JONES of Tyn Rallt? Llanbeblig
and
Richard JONES of Rhosdican? Llanbeblig

According to the 1911 census, they married around 1899.

Winifred Jones was born 1865 to John Jones and Martha nee Williams.
Richard Jones was born abt 1869 to William Jones and Gwen ??

On the 1901 census they were both living with Winifred's widowed mother. It says that Winifred and Richard are both 'married', and it describes Richard as son-in-law.

They had children Owen Rees Jones 1902 and Martha Winifred Jones 1907.

I don't know when either of them died. They were both on the 1911 census.

Flintshire / Where is the Registration Office in the District of Saint Asaph
« on: Wednesday 09 June 21 00:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have ancestors who married at 'Register Office in the District of Saint Asaph in the Counties of Flint and Denbigh'.  They married in 1917.

Please can anyone tell me where the Register Office was?
I see online that it is currently in Rhyl, but it doesn't look like an old building. Did it move?

The groom was a 'Licensed Victualler + Ship Builder' and his residence was the 'Bee Hotel [and I think it then says Rhyl]'.

Thank you
