The Common Room / George James Stevens (1832-1907)
« on: Thursday 23 March 23 10:31 GMT (UK)  »
We have the above gentleman born about 1832 in Harrow, Middlesex, son of Zachariah (a tailor) and Charlotte Brown. We have him in all census from 1841 to 1901 before he dies in 1907 in Yorkshire (we even have his parents and older children in the 1831 Census !).

He marries a Sophia Harbrow (a widow of ‘Full Age’) on 19/10/1862 in St Marys Church, Islington, Middlesex, with the Marriage Cert showing her father as Henry Badger, a Cooper. Her address at the time of marriage was 2 Strahan Terrace (which we could not find by searching this address in the 1861 census on FindMyPast).

In the 1871 census, George Stevens (a Baker in 1861 & on his marriage certificate) is found in Leeds, Yorkshire showing as widowed. In 1881 he is shown as single, living in Clifford cum Boston, Yorkshire. He subsequently remarries in 1887 to Ann Wilson in Bradford.

The question is, who was Sophia Badger/Harbrow as having looked for birth/marriage/death/census we have failed to find any trace of her.

Thank you,

Al & Al

The Lighter Side / We Three Hales ......
« on: Saturday 23 January 21 09:23 GMT (UK)  »
We have been members of RootsChat for over sixteen years and our current avatar has been in use for the last ten years.  This picture is taken from an original photograph in our possession, which we believe is the only one as there are no other descendants from these three children, other than our direct family line.

We have a basic family tree on Ancestry (with no uploaded photographs) for use with our DNA tests and regularly have numerous hints as to possible matches etc.   These hints also show around twenty photographs as being matches to our tree and as well as scans of census and certificates, there are about six proper photographs.

Looking through these we see that our RootsChat avatar has been copied (with a very poor resolution) to a Hales family tree - but attached to these children’s Great Grandfathers record.  This photograph has also been shared to 56 other Ancestry user trees to their same Great Grandfather.

Whilst we are aware that once on-line, it is easy to copy and reuse photographs - what is the point of attaching a photograph of three unnamed Hales children born in the 1870’s to someone born in 1729, with no explanatory note to go with it ?

Having looked into three of the 56 trees having this photograph attached, none of them had our branch shown with their trees stopping at our G G G G Grandfather who just has their birth and death shown.

Sorry for the rant, but if any of these 56 Ancestry users were to contact us, we would be happy to show them where these three children fit in to the Hales family line.

The Common Room / George James Stevens

We have a large family of STEVENS one of whom is George, born 1832 Harrow, Middlesex, Died 1907 Hunslet, Yorkshire.

We have found him on all census during his life and know that he married Ann Fearnley (nee Wilson) in 1887 in Bradford, Yorkshire.

On the 1861 Census he was in Fulham, Middlesex as a Baker Man (Servant).

We have now found a marriage for him on 19th October 1862 in Islington, London to Sophia Harbrow who is shown as a widow, with her father being Henry Badger (a Cooper).

We assume that Sophia has died before 1871, as in the 1871 Census George is found in Leeds, Yorkshire working as a Bath Attendant and shown as widowed.

Can any one find out more about Sophia Harbrow/Badger, as having looked for details concerning her, we cannot find her birth, previous marriage or being on a previous census.

Thanks,

Al & Al

Canada Lookup Request / Charles Little
« on: Saturday 21 November 20 19:11 GMT (UK)  »
We are trying to assist a third/fourth cousin match to my adopted Uncles DNA, but they do not know anything to do with the background of their grandfathers family.

The facts known are the above gentleman was born in Toronto, Canada on 10th January 1921, married, and died in 2014, also in Toronto.

Whilst we have looked for birth/marriage/census records, we have been unable to find any matches – but hope that he may be connected to a family from Kent, England who emigrated to Toronto in the early 1900’s and who is in my Uncles family tree.

Sorry not much to go on, but any clues would be gratefully received.

Thanks,

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / The Globe, Boro’ Market
« on: Sunday 04 October 20 20:07 BST (UK)  »
We have inherited an old pewter Beer Tankard, marked “Quart” and 67 (which we take to mean 1867) and whilst we can read Globe, Boro’ Market (now know as The Globe Tavern and built in 1872), we cannot read the owners name.  Any ideas ?

The Common Room / Ancestry - New and Updated Collections
« on: Tuesday 06 November 18 18:46 GMT (UK)  »
I regularly check for new records added to Ancestry and for example, 28 new and updated sets were added in September 2018 - but no Additional records have been added since 30th September 2018.

Have they run out of records to transcribe or are they secretly working on a large set of records?

The Common Room / Arthur Neale
« on: Saturday 03 October 15 18:11 BST (UK)  »
Arthur Neale married Clara Stickland Mackie on 9th April 1902 at The Register Office, Southampton, Hampshire. All we know of Arthur is that he was age 35 at Marriage (? 1867) when he was a Ships Steward and his father was Henry Neale (deceased) a Gardner. He was not at home in 1911 (Clara was married, and the Head with three children) but he may have been away being a ships steward. Possible death for Arthur is Q1 1846 in Winchester, Hampshire as Clara died Q3 1953 in Southampton, Hampshire.

We have full information concerning the past of Clara (born 1868 at St Peter Port in Guernsey), but cannot trace a suitable Arthur Neale with the right father. My Father can remembers meeting both Clara and Arthur (I guess some time in the 1940's) when Arthur was then a Tailor

Can any one trace a suitable Arthur or more details about him ?

Thanks,  Al & Al
