Hertfordshire / George Audley - Wymondley/Hitchin
« on: Wednesday 24 August 22 16:16 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I'm trying to find out any more information about George Audley who was born in 1538 in Wymondley and died in 1602 in Hitchin. He was my 10x great grandfather.

I'm looking for any potential parents but I seem to have hit a dead end. He was maried to Agnes Rugmer. I have a copy of his will but no details of parents or siblings.

They had four children:
Susanna, born in 1576, died in 1587 aged 11
Avis, born in 1580
Rhoda, born in 1584
Mary, born in 1588

Could anyone possibly help me or suggest where I could try next please?

Thank you so much!

Bedfordshire / Feild family of Cople
« on: Thursday 04 August 22 15:31 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

This board has been invaluable in helping me! I've had a few wrong turns but I guess thats common.

Anyway - I've traced my oldest ancestor on one line back as John Feild born 1604 and possibly dies 1684 in Cople.

However I can't find any record of a marriage (probably to an Ann Andrews) or of his parents at aall. I've tried all the usual pages and read line by line the parish registers for the time.

Has anyone got any advice on what to try next please? I keep finding a John Feild born in Leighton Buzzard at the same time but thats not him!

Any advice greatly received!

Bedfordshire / Who are Ellis Hare's parents?
« on: Friday 18 February 22 10:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hello! I was wondering if someone might be able to help me untangle something!

I have an Ellis Hare (1740-1826), who was married to Elizabeth Sanders (1744-1810) - but I have some confusion over his parents!

From what I can find, I have his mother and father as Edward Hare (1661 - 1760) and Mary Ellis (1670 - 1726).

Now I know things have changed since the 1600's but I'm almost certain even then you couldn't give birth 14 years after you had died...

There are a couple of possibilities I can see:
- Edward remarried after Mary died but he would still have been about 80..
- My Ellis is actually the son of one of the men I've marked as his brother, Elis (B.1707)

I can't find any further information.

Could anyone help? Thanks in advance!

Bedfordshire / Can anyone help me untangle a confusing situation please?
« on: Monday 29 March 21 14:38 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Hoping someone can help me - I'm totally stuck!!

My 5x Great Grandmother Frances 'Fanny' Hare (Yes, I know) seems to have married a John Chesham in Biggleswade in aroun 1820ish, and had children. So far so simple.

Except in 1833, John Chesham goes to Australia and died there 21 years later.

In the menatime, Frances seems to have met John Wilson and I think had more children including my 4 x Great Grandmother Louisa.

The problem is - the kids all seem to go by either Chesham or Wilson - and Louisa goes by Chesham even though her father was John Wilson.

I'm really confused and I can only think maybe I have gone totally wrong somewhere? Can anyone help me please? Thank you for any advice you give in advance!

Bedfordshire / Orphaned ancestors - where do I go next?
« on: Wednesday 03 March 21 16:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I was wondering if anyone would be able to advise me?

I've found that my 5x Great-Grandfather Abraham Kilby was orphaned at the age of 1, along with his siblings when his parents Robert and Elizabeth both died within six months of each other in 1740 in Langford.

I know that he survived and went on to have a family of his own but I was wondering if there was any way I could find out what happened to him and his siblings. I don't think there were censuses then? Perhaps family took them in? But I dont know how to find out more.

Could they have been sent to a workhouse if not?

I have checked newspapers in case anything was in there but nothing.

Also his mother and a baby were buried on the same day in 1740 (Elizabeth and baby Eliza) - am I safe to assume that Elizabeth died in childbirth?

It all seems such a sad story.  :'(

Armed Forces / "Disposal of Men Under Age"?
« on: Monday 15 February 21 12:44 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks to everyone who has helped me so far in finding out more about my Great Uncle Percy R Fields (Jebber and Jim1 et al - thank you so much!)

I've now found documents relating to him being sent home for being underage - he was 16 when he enlisted but made it as far as possibly Alexandria (?) before he was sent home.  I've attached that.

He re-enlisted later, but appears to have spent most of his time in the UK playing up and receiving punishments for minor misconduct  ::)

Can anyone tell me any more about this please? Did he have to be 18 to see service overseas?

Any insight would be really helpful.

Bedfordshire / Burials from Biggleswade Workhouse?
« on: Monday 08 February 21 17:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, I've recently found out that a relative of mine was in Biggleswade Workhouse.

I was just wondering if anyone knew where people who died in the Workhouse would be buried? Would they have been claimed by family or was there somewhere else - perhaps a 'paupers' grave site in Biggleswade?

It was John Kilby and he was in the workhouse in 1841 and he died 3 years later so may have died there. His son Emmanuel most likely died in the same workhouse in 1881. :(

World War One / Essex Regiment - Balkans? At 16?
« on: Monday 08 February 21 14:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hello!
I'm looking into my Great Uncle Percy R Field's war service and I have some limited info. To me it looks like he joined up in 1915, as his Medals Records seems to say that's when he fought in the Balkans to get his Star Medal.

The thing is - can this be true? He would have been only 16. Plus I can't find any record of the Essex Regiment fighting in the Balkans?

Does anyone have any knowledge about this please? Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer!

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Fields/Morris/Hays family?
« on: Tuesday 15 August 17 12:55 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me please? My great uncle Cecil Fields married Florence B Morris in 1927 in Basford, and they had a daughter Coral in 1928. Coral went on to marry a Mr Hays ... and thats all I can find!

Could anyone help me find any other information about Cecil's life and family please? I'm not sure the geneaology site I'm signed up to is the best one...

Many thanks!
