Midlothian / Patrick Balfour
« on: Sunday 23 October 22 01:48 BST (UK)  »
I have a Patrick Balfour born out of wedlock to Rosina Balfour on 23 Aug 1867 in Edinburgh. He is the subject of a paternity claim between Rosina and Patrick McGlinchy in 1869 (she was still married to Bernard McKenny at the time by whom she had a legitimate child James who died aged 2). Both Patrick and her other illigitimate daughter Ann are missing from the 1871 census where Rosina is living with Joseph McLachlan who she later marries. In the 1881 census Ann is present but no sign of Patrick. I have searched Scotlandspeople for a death for Patrick but no such record appears either under Balfour or McGlinchy.   Rosina married Joseph McLachlan in 1873 declaring herself to be a Spinster - at this stage she had given birth to a daughter by Joseph in 1872. Any ideas as to where I can maybe find a death record for Patrick?
I found Bernard McKenna's death notice in 1909 stating he was single with the same parents as listed on his marriage to Rosina so perhaps Rosina was a Bigamist or may there have been a divorce?

Lanarkshire / William Williams and Margaret McDonald or Mclachlan
« on: Saturday 01 October 16 06:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Trying to find the marriage of this couple. previously poster this on the Renfrew board
Margaret is the daughter of Joseph McLachlan and Rosina Balfour born 1874 in Canongate. The family along with her sister Jane Anne moved to Greenock where Jane Anne marries John Gowans (my Gr Grand Parents) where her parents are listed as John McLachlan and Rosina Mclachlan pre McDonald ms Balfour.
The family appears to change their name to McDonald on the move to Greenock and appear on the census records as McDonald.
Have not found Margaret after the 1891 Census and I presume she may have married
Her father died in Greenock in 1900 - registered as McDonald
Her mother was found on the 1911 census with a border William Williams from Glasgow (electrician b c1883)
Her mother died in Ayr in 1913 death registered as   McDonald  by son-in-law William Williams
Margaret died in Glasgow in 1942 death registered by husband William Williams
I've searched for marriages between William Williams and Margaret but have not been able to find one. Have not found a death record for William either
Looking through the Valuation Roles and I can spot a William Williams at the address that Margaret died at in 1920, 1925 and 1935 (St Mungo Street)
Any ideas

South Africa / Cape Death Notices - 1834 onwards online
« on: Monday 22 February 16 07:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I discovered this weekend that you can view and download Cape Archive Death Notices on the Familysearch.org website. The links are from the catalog at :

https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/331262?availability=Family%20History%20Library

You will find here where there is a camera sign that you can browse the images. To find the image you are looking for search NAAIRS for the reference and then based on the year open the relevant film and navigate to the document by checking where the numbering starts from and advancing the film to the approximate document and browse

This is a fabulous way of getting a copy of the death notices as you cannot photograph documents in the Cape Archives

The 1st film on this page from about image 178 onwards appears to have some of the original documents transcribed on Tanap

Travelling People / Veriquer Wasingtion
« on: Monday 10 November 14 07:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hi I have a Veriquer Wasingtion as the father of a Jeckeriaa who married Henry George Warr in Birmingham on 05 Aug 1894. He is the brother of my Gr Grandmother Eliza Warr. Veriquer is named as a Traveller deceased on the marriage record.

The only record I have been able to find for Jeckeriaa is her marriage. I cannot locate her or Henry after the marriage. I was wondering if anyone has any advice on how to find more information about travelling families
Thanks
Gillian
